It was far from easy but Newcastle have picked up a second straight 2-1 victory downing Nottingham Forest at the daunting City Ground last night. The performance was excellent with two goals from Alexander Isak enough to take the three points, but just barely.
Elliot Anderson had his dream shattered by a controversial VAR ruling. The Geordie came on in the second half for Allan Saint-Maximin, who is reportedly injured. The 20-year-old provided an instant spark in his best performance for his hometown club.
That performance should have been topped with a match-winning maiden goal. However, the referee was called on to review Sean Longstaff’s role in the buildup. It was ruled that Felipe wasn’t in control when his attempted clearance was deflected by Longstaff.
Justice prevailed as Newcastle won a penalty which Isak coolly dispatched into the net. The Swede was outstanding scoring in added time at the end of both halves with his first strike a moment of class.
Barring the VAR debacle, this was an excellent match of football with Newcastle putting in an entertaining display. The result had a lot riding on it with Forest just 2 points above the bottom three.
There were plenty of borderline challenges, gamesmanship, and class on offer. Former Magpie Jonjo Shelvey put in an excellent performance for his new club and didn’t skirt any of his duals.
The three points are what Newcastle need heading into the international break which arrives in a timely manner. Next up is a critical showdown against Manchester United. The hope is Miguel Almiron, Anthony Gordon, and Miguel Almiron are available.
If not, Anderson could get just his second league start. It would be well-deserved. But for Isak’s exploits, the local lad put in a Man of the Match display with VAR’s cruelty momentarily delaying his dream of scoring for Newcastle United.

I know what you mean relegation battles are great fun when you ain’t in the mixer.
Really hoping Everton and West Ham go down. Although Everton getting something today would be good for us in terms of keeping Chelsea out of sight.

Comment #164Of all the teams down the bottom, I would love Everton to go down too. Not so bothered about West Ham. Would have been good if Villa were struggling down there too but hey-ho.

Comment #165I thought that we should have bought both Murphy’s at the time, from what I’ve seen of Josh he has looked a lot better than a League 1 player.
Identical twins in the team could cause the opposition some confusion! 🙂

Comment #168The most pleasing thing about last night’s match was the way we played. It’s so refreshing and we are slowly getting back to our better play from earlier in the season. I don’t comment on match day typically as some people are like rollercoasters – one minute they’re on a high and love everything about the toon, and next minute we’re s**t and let’s get rid of “insert any name here”.

It’s a shame because that half a dozen spoil it for everyone who would like to post during the match, it’s almost hysterical.

Comment #173That is the problem with Southampton though they don’t take their chances. Always expected a Spurs win in this game (hope I am wrong though)
I think we will overtake Spurs but this games is not one we should be worried about.

Think so, Isak was moved to the left for a while. Change of mind after the equaliser probably?

Comment #184Afternoon lads and lasses, how are we all doing? Personally nursing a bit of a headache after enjoying St Paddy’s Day revelry a tad too much, but it was all in good craic. Had a great lunch catch-up with the one and only Magicmac54, very much looking forward to the April catch-up now, should be great craic. More immediately looking forward to the crunch match between Ireland and England in the Six Nations, no complacency on our end. The English will be out to spoil the party, injuries on our end, England looking to reclaim pride following that result v France so it could be a tricky one.
On the Toon, great result for the lads last night and great to see Isak get 90 mins in the legs and two goals too is brilliant. Agree that the intl break comes at the right time to get some players up to full fitness. Top 4 tilt still on!

Comment #200Ty21 – the Spurs backline have been creaking for a while but they still managed 4th last season and they’re 4th now.
What does that say about us being being a “terrible team”? That’s mad. Spurs are a very good team but inconsistent, which is why we can finished above them. Kane and Son are incredible and Hjoberg is an excellent player too.
