Newcastle are the walking wounded as they begin their training camp in Dubai. After the win at Nottingham Forest, Eddie Howe detailed the injuries afflicting his squad. Those struggling at the moment are Fabian Schar, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, and Allan Saint-Maximin.
The quartet could be available when Manchester United come to St. James’ Park to kick off a congested April. Newcastle will have navigate next month without leading goalscorer Miguel Almiron, who is out for six weeks with a thigh injury.
There is now news that another prominent member of the squad has picked up an injury. The Athletic is reporting that Nick Pope has dropped out of the England squad with an injury suffered prior to Friday’s win. Former Magpie and local lad Fraser Foster has been called up by Gareth Southgate to replace Pope.
Pope reportedly missed training last week with the undisclosed injury but managed to start and play the entirety of the 2-1 win at Forest. The 30-year-old’s withdrawal appears to be precautionary and he should be available to face the Red Devils in two weeks.

Comment #41Still odd though to be able to be unable to play for Switzerland (in qualification games not simply a friendlies) then play for your club. Perhaps Switzerland were not planning on using him in those games anyway?

Comment #42Macas – Botman did that for the Dutch U21s when he first signed and wasn’t starting for us.

Players pick up knocks and niggles all the time. During a long season it’s very rare for a player to be 100% fit so Pope and Schär likely do have knocks that they theoretically could play through but also could legitimately withdraw from international duty on account of said niggles or knocks. Can’t see that being an overly onerous thing to do to be honest.

Comment #44Macas – Fraser isn’t exactly known for his professionalism.
It’s possible these players have a pass from the international manager.

Comment #46do you have to play for your country if you are called up? can’t you choose to miss a game even if you are not injured?
Pope probably happy not to join up with England after the blunder he made in England’s last match.

If you can get Maddisson for only 40M £ then you should be hired as an special assistant to Dan Ashworth! 😉
I know JM will only have a year left on his contract but there will likely be a bidding war for his services.

Comment #55Maddison is from the midlands and played for clubs in the midlands (including Norwich). i think he likes to be a big fish in a small pond and not move far away from where he grew up.

Comment #57Struggling to see how Maddison, a number 10, could provide cover for Bruno, a defensive midfielder. Also struggling to comprehend the view that Maddison doesn’t absolutely walk into our midfield but there we are.

Not sure I understand your comment about average players bought in the summer? Are you saying Isak and Botman are only average players?

Comment #59So, just picked up these pieces off Twitter:
– out of contract 2023: Gillespie, Dummett, Clark, Ritchie, M.Longstaff
– likely other outgoings 2023 (?): Lewis, Darlow, Fraser, Manquillo, (and they also say) Maxi.
If the above happens, another writes:
“Using data from spotrac.com those ten players would amount to apx 330k pw off the books. Plus the 160k for Wood + Shelvey. Almost half a mil off the books…”
Big, big summer??

Comment #61A funny case of an International is Sosa – he played at all youth levels for Croatia but Germany knew that he qualified through his mother to play for Germany. Germany offered Sosa a place which Sosa accepted and gained German citizenship. However when Germany went to register him they found that he had already played in a specific game for Croatia which meant he could no longer switch teams under a not well known FIFA rule.
Sosa issued a public apology to the entire nation of Croatia and then got back in their first team pretty much straight away.

Personally, I’d be amazed if Maxi isn’t off in the summer. I’d agree with shifting the lot of those players named. Hendrick and Gayle are still in contract until 2024 so if we could offload them too that would be ideal but we’re probably looking at season long loan deals where we subsidise their wages heavily again.
Our spending will largely depend on the the financials of any new deal with Riyadh Air/Saudia (whichever ends up being the shirt sponsor) so it’ll be interesting to see what we end up with, especially given how the PL cartel have tried to make it tricky with tightening of third party commercial contracts and the new “fair market value” on commercial deals.

Ruddy – I think we will see a step-change in income, e.g. sponsorship, in June to take us to that next level for next season. We won’t have the depth of squad City, Chelsea, etc… do, but we will be getting closer 🙂

Comment #71Results couldn`t of went any better for us this weekend really, the Arsenal result doesn`t bother me at all as they will be top 2 anyway imo.
I think we will do Manure up here, can`t wait to see winghey face Fernandez blubbering like a spoilt brat..
Raj,
You mentioned that air fryer being cheap at £79, i think you are basing your price on a Ninja which is over 200 quid.
My old girl bought me a Tower air fryer for xmas and it cost £50, and it does exactly what it says on the tin, it air fry`s , the same as a Ninja.
I cook all kinds in it , cracking piece of kit.

Comment #72I never thought we wouldn’t sign Botman.
I am very confident we won’t sign Osihmen (or indeed Gvardiol for matter)
Too many clubs will be in for those two so they will be VERY expensive and we would be signing them to sideline Isak and Botman – makes no sense.

Comment #78I’m very interested in the rules pertaining to players who say they are injured and are therefore not called up for International duties.
It has just been posted that the player has to prove to the England set up that he is injured. I was not aware of this.
TDS have you got a link to these rules you referred to earlier.

Comment #79These top prospects/players probably don’t ‘just’ want a team that has maybe only just scraped into the CL for the first time in years with likely no chance of winning. They want teams that will go deep into the CL whilst challenging for domestic titles. There will always be exceptions but the above is true mostly.

Comment #80But then Flurzinho only one of Isak or Osihmen would start unless you are suggesting we play 2 up front?
As for Gvardiol he is a left sided centre back like Botman not a right sided one like Schar. Technically we could player two lefties in the centre but I doubt we would.
