Newcastle are the walking wounded as they begin their training camp in Dubai. After the win at Nottingham Forest, Eddie Howe detailed the injuries afflicting his squad. Those struggling at the moment are Fabian Schar, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, and Allan Saint-Maximin.
The quartet could be available when Manchester United come to St. James’ Park to kick off a congested April. Newcastle will have navigate next month without leading goalscorer Miguel Almiron, who is out for six weeks with a thigh injury.
There is now news that another prominent member of the squad has picked up an injury. The Athletic is reporting that Nick Pope has dropped out of the England squad with an injury suffered prior to Friday’s win. Former Magpie and local lad Fraser Foster has been called up by Gareth Southgate to replace Pope.
Pope reportedly missed training last week with the undisclosed injury but managed to start and play the entirety of the 2-1 win at Forest. The 30-year-old’s withdrawal appears to be precautionary and he should be available to face the Red Devils in two weeks.

Comment #164From almost the first window of the new era iv dreamt of Diaby & Maddison & if we can pull that off we would be seriously cooking next season!
The young striker I would have loved would have been Folarin Jerry Balogun but If Arsenal would sell him now then it would have to be serious money after the season he is having on lone!

It is complex, lots of permutations.
Davas,
Agreed good plan – 3rd – £2M extra prize money compared to 4th. Let Man U, Lpool, Spurs and Brighton fight out 4th.
Clint,
Exactly (although I wish to avoid Europa conf league ideally which I am confident we will) I never understood the CL or nothing brigade. As for the Lasses it was not me that posted that, hope they get promoted though.

Strangely that option doesn’t seem to be listed. But as the only way there can be 5 in the CL is by 2 teams winning the CL and Europa league plus both being outside the top 4 then i would say we’d drop into the Europa league.
Could be totally wrong though 🙂

Comment #170BTW…I had 8th in my predictions, which I saw as a solid, impressive improvement from last season and previous. So, if we finish anything above 8th, I will be happy and take what we have. Of course, I would be over the moon finishing in CL spots but I like the fact the club are looking long term and, whilst it would be amazing, they are building for a sustainable, high-performing future, I.e. we finish in CL consistently and eventually challenge for that and the PL.

Comment #172Like the idea of Brighton earning the right to win the FA Cup by beating ManU or Fulham on the semis and possibly Man City in the final.
The world needs a Manchester final like democracy needs Trump or Putin, who visited a city he’s destroyed at night so the media couldn’t show him in the ruins where thousands died.

European qualification for UEFA competitions explained

The UEFA Champions League trophy
A breakdown of how Premier League clubs can qualify for the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League, along with the clubs appearing in each competition
Below is a breakdown of how Premier League clubs can qualify to play in UEFA competitions, along with which tournament each qualified club will play in.
Ordinarily, the maximum number of English teams in UEFA competitions is seven.
(Please note UEFA reserves the right to change the conditions of the access list so these criteria can be subject to change.)
UEFA Champions League (UCL) qualification
In normal circumstances, four UCL places are given to English clubs who fulfil the following criteria:
The top four teams in the Premier League qualify for the group stage proper.
UEFA Europa League (UEL) qualification
In normal circumstances, two UEL places are given to English clubs who fulfil the following criteria:
The fifth-placed team in the Premier League qualify for the group stage proper.
The winners of the FA Cup qualify for the group stage proper.
UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL) qualification
The EFL Cup winners qualify for the playoff stages.

Where these qualifications changes
a) If the FA Cup winners finish in the top five of the Premier League, their UEL group stage place will go to the next-highest ranked team not qualified for UEFA competitions in the Premier League.
b) If the EFL Cup winners finish in the top five of the Premier League (or top six if (a) happens), their UECL playoff place will go to the next-highest ranked team not qualified for UEFA competitions in the Premier League.
How does winning UCL/UEL affect qualification?
Should a Premier League club win the UEFA Champions League they will automatically qualify for the group stage of next season’s competition regardless of their league finishing position.
Should a Premier League club win the UEFA Europa League they will automatically qualify for the group stage of next season’s UEFA Champions League regardless of their league finishing position.
If a club win the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League and finish in the top four, their qualification for the UCL through their league position is not transferred to another team.
A maximum of five Premier League teams are eligible for UEFA Champions League qualification.
In the event that a Premier League club win the UEFA Champions League and another win the UEFA Europa League and neither of these clubs finish in the top four of the Premier League, the club lying fourth in the table will drop into the UEFA Europa League group stage.
If a Premier League club win the UEFA Champions League and another win the UEFA Europa League and neither have qualified for UEFA competitions through their league positions or by winning the FA Cup or EFL Cup, they will qualify for the UEFA Champions League and the club finishing fourth in the table will drop into the UEFA Europa League group stage.
This UEFA Europa League group stage place will be in addition to the one for the club finishing fifth and to the places in the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League for the FA Cup and EFL Cup winners (or for the highest-ranked clubs not qualified for UEFA competitions in the Premier League if the FA Cup and EFL Cup winners have already qualified for UEFA competitions through their league position).

Comment #178Basically, five clubs can qualify for CL should a team win either outside of the top four. Disaster is Chelsea winning UCL and Man U winning UEL and both finishing outside of top four.

Comment #179Like Ace50, I had top 8 down as an excellent season, in fact I was even more pragmatic in my expectations in that top 10 and a cup run was seen as progress in my books. So, for me, we’re ahead of where I expected us to be at this stage of the journey so we’re very much in bonus territory in my books.
European football of any persuasion will do for me whether that’s Europa Conference or Champions League. Let’s embrace whatever happens and be happy we’re on our way 😀

Having said that it we get anywhere near €8M for Lewis I will eat one of my wife’s many hats (I only own two hats so I am not eating one of them)
Just like if we sold Bruno for only €60M.

I think most rational fans thought top 8 is good progress before a ball was kicked and I would take that now (I had no specific expectations about domestic cups beyond – “lets try”) ideally I would prefer to avoid conf league though.
The issue is always the same – start brilliantly and some people change their expectations very quickly. Suddenly CL is a must and the club are artificially holding us back by not signing player x y and z in Jan. Europa League is a disaster etc etc…
