Magpie Withdraws From International Duty With Minor Injury

Newcastle are the walking wounded as they begin their training camp in Dubai. After the win at Nottingham Forest, Eddie Howe detailed the injuries afflicting his squad. Those struggling at the moment are Fabian Schar, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, and Allan Saint-Maximin.

The quartet could be available when Manchester United come to St. James’ Park to kick off a congested April. Newcastle will have navigate next month without leading goalscorer Miguel Almiron, who is out for six weeks with a thigh injury.

There is now news that another prominent member of the squad has picked up an injury. The Athletic is reporting that Nick Pope has dropped out of the England squad with an injury suffered prior to Friday’s win. Former Magpie and local lad Fraser Foster has been called up by Gareth Southgate to replace Pope.

Pope reportedly missed training last week with the undisclosed injury but managed to start and play the entirety of the 2-1 win at Forest. The 30-year-old’s withdrawal appears to be precautionary and he should be available to face the Red Devils in two weeks.

I said it for years when he was at the club, and I’ll say it again now. Mitro is the biggest liability going and Rafa was spot on to get rid of him. He’s put on a disasterclass this afternoon. The man won’t kick a ball again in the PL this season.

So basically let’s finish 3rd and avoid all of that complication yes ?

Would certainly feel a lot easier if Chelsea and Man Utd get papped out of Europe

The draw has already been made. Man City face Sheffield United, the winner of Manchester United and Fulham face Brighton.

That is the funny thing about Chelsea under Abramovich, no matter who he appointed or sacked or when or why they won stuff!

Of course cash was a huge factor. However no other owner has ever (in my recollection anyway) been successful with that strategy.

On Conte’s emotional outburst (after his recent health problems) it reminds me of Gullit’s team sheet gamble/resignation- he at least had grace and sense to then resign in 24 hours or so

Has Conte told Levy and players of his views already to no avail – I think he should have before throwing them publically under bus – true or not

I’m not sure whether he truly believed he could and will get a positive reaction or just wanted to give “his truth” before he inevitably leaves ( now maybe before season end) when it just may have seemed little more than sour grapes? Probably with a good payoff and his head (undesevedly?) held high despite knowingly engineering it?)

I am not too bothered except it stirred thoughts in me about how the media can have a biased approach to these type of stories depending on personaliies/clubs involved

There is to my mind another facet of this development basically the Spurs fans’ and press’ changing view of Levy and their landmark stadium as their top 4 credentials unravel as Liverpool and Chelsea continue to struggle amd we begin to again hit form

Of course Arsenal’s incredible rise will have put everything into sharp relief 🙂

When Ashley arrived we were as I recall better placed than Spurs whichever way you care to look at – Fans, Money, Stadium, European rating and immediate future prospects ( although we had had a dip)

Now after an owner that National Press felt was all that we that we should reasonably expect !? Who in 14 years had eventually completely reversed the position between us and them and set us back years generally (especially since introduction of FFP ) we ( amongst other clubs’ fans) should recognise and share the sorrow and anguish for how Spurs have been run as the media are reporting on sympathetically to a large extent

    I think not

I know our record doesn’t compare with “recent” glories of likes of Everton and Spurs for example but that ( as we know) is because whilst we were always a club equivalent to them in potential we have been crippled with a succession of unambitious owners going back to McKeag and Westwood

Only sporadically have we had the good fortune to have even half decent owners before their foundations briefly and at a cost were not built on and allowed to stagnate

Being in the North East also remains a problem compared to London and NW (but not quite as much as before) not only for us but even the shower down the road and Boro as we are the poor relations in more than just football

We will have to be content with being regarded by most other clubs’ jealous fan bases and the largely “should be better educated” London and NW centric Press as an unachieving rather than underachieving club who simplyand unfairly hit the jackpot to everybody else’s amazement and chagrin

Howay Conte be honest I bet you didn’t expect to generate that/any reaction in this outpost – and couldn’t care less 😉

To be honest started out as brief comment on his topical rant then went off at a tangent as I can be inclined to do when our treatment over the years by a largely unsympathetic press/media comes into my focus

Fair point Ty. Just seems weird (almost fate) that stuff like that happens.

I think this result today for Fulham will result in their season petering out. So, 3rd to 7th likely between us, Man U, Spurs, Liverpool, and Brighton. We play 3 of those at home 🙂

I’ve admired Palhinha from the moment he set foot in the league. If we’re looking for an all action, press resistance, technical 6 with a great range of passing, we could do a *lot* worse than him. Far too good for Fulham.

    Good post Magscar,

What I would say is this…Conte is a totally unproven manager as in fact most “Elite” managers are. Why can’t he make Spurs successful (after all they are not that terrible are they?)

I have no respect for people like that. They only do it a clubs built for success irrespective of if they are manager or not. Same goes for many “Elite” players.

Is it challenging to win stuff at Barca, Bayern, Juve, Man U, Liverpool, Real etc….? Would they win stuff if you were present there or not?

How did I know you’d leap to Mitro’s defence? 😆 My issue with Mitro has always been that he requires a team’s entire system to be built around him, rather than being a capable team player. It had nothing to do with his temperament, which was always questionable at best in any case.

Mitro’s 11 goals this season matches his previous decent, albeit underwhelming, stats last time Fulham were in the league and he’s been missing in most games recently which has coincided with their downturn in form. He was an overrated liability then, and he’s an overrated liability now.

Anyway, water under the bridge. I don’t even remember who we kept on as his replacement. How many did he get.

Right now, I really wouldn’t want him either. We’ve got a speed merchant there with skill to boot. Mitro doesn’t fit that description.

Mitro cannot be accommodated in a successful team wanting to win things because he needs a team built around him. That’s fine if you’re a world class striker such as Harry Kane with 200+ goals in the PL, but not if you’re Mitro who has *checks notes* 35 goals in 125 PL appearances.

Mitro has a PL goal every 3.5 games. That’s the exact same goalscoring record as Chris Wood who has 55 goals in 196 PL appearances.

In other words, Mitro is as good a goalscorer in the PL as Chris Wood, yet is infinitely more arrogant, temperamental and constraining to a team’s style of play.

So I’d recommend you take your own advice, take a step back, check his overall record, and breathe. 😉

Well, wherever people think Isak plays, even an ex makem is impressed by him:

“Even former Sunderland striker Defoe was stunned by Isak’s impact against Forest. He told Premier League Productions: “Again, his (Isak’s) performance tonight was a masterclass number nine performance.

“When you watch the game, I keep saying when he had to be that focal point he was strong with the ball, he was running in behind. Two good goals, pressure moments. He’s brilliant and you just can’t see him stopping at this point.””

Agreed – Elite managers often earn their title by being at elite clubs from off ( except lkes of Mourinho at Porto?)

Having said that some manager’s personalities/ abilities lend themselves very much to building up unfancied clubs as they are suited to a more direct and hand on approach where players “believe” in them but which they may not get at “big” clubs

Potter is finding life difficult after Brighton experience and I suspect if Eddie had gone there ( instead of to us) he also may have struggled to mould and integrate that growing and ill thought through squad in time he may be allowed

Certainly if Abramovitch was still there Potter wouldn’t be but would he have been there in first place – No I think

There used to be an apprenticeship system at all clubs – i can’t recall “unknowns” taking the big jobs you had to learn your trade in lower leagues or “smaller clubs” thgrough 60s and 70s

No big player walking into top job immediately his playing career ended

I think Liverpool began to change their approach capitilising on their Boot Room set up and approach to successfully ( and unexpectedly to a large number of onlookers) follow Shankley with the amazing Bob Paisley then Dagleish but with people behind him

History shows that the approach wasn’t inexhaustable and after Hysel as well, their fortunes began to change and other clubs took advantage

Will we ever see the PL dominated by British managers like Busby, Revie, Clough, Shankly Paisley and Ferguson?

Seems unlikely but as much as Potter is tarnishing that possibility and ignoring the false dawns of the Gerrards and Lampards I honestly believe that given a fair wind Eddie has the true potential and ability to get there with us as we grow together – fingers crossed

Just as back in the day there is a dynamic that has always come into play although it has changed somewhat for managers with the coming of Directors of football etc but on the other hand been exacerbated by the coming of the age of the “Elite” players

It is basically the move upwards from dealing with players largely without ego who you inherit or bought relatively inexpensively who buy into your philosophy ( as i said earlier) to having to go to a richer club and sanction big money buys confidently and if not previously a” big ” player or well known get the spoilt ones to accept your ways

Eddie is doing this but he is in an environment conducive to his abiity and approach and has carrie dfans with him

Contrast that to Potter not out of work but going to a “bigger” club without an as well thought out recruitment strategy, a bloated squad, unsettled players some with unjustified ego’s, and fans more or less disenchanted with him from the off

Would he have done as good a job as Eddie but in different ways? I don’t know and it’s moot anyway

I’m happy with Eddie and currently it seems a marriage made in heaven

I’m struggling to suggest “newer” upcoming managers who are British and look to follow on

There is Cooper who has his qualities but i believe will remain more suited to Forest type of situation but if Dyche wasn’t already there might have been given once over by Everton to revive them?

Carrick is seemingly doing a good job at Boro and i haven’t followed his journey closely enough but maybe he can go higher?
