The Athletic’s Chris Waugh reported last week of Newcastle’s plan to add around six new signings this summer. The positions to be targeted are left-back, center-back, two midfielders, and two forwards.
The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has backed those claims as his sources within the club are echoing similar sentiments. The budget has yet to be determined as Newcastle navigate the final stretch of the campaign with European football next season a real possibility.
Which competition the club lands in will determine just how big the budget becomes with the carrot of the Champions League still dangling. However, the summer plans are shaping up with the six aforementioned positions already identified and some enticing targets on the shortlist.
An attacking left-back seems to be a priority with Kieran Tierney the preferred choice. Arsenal would have to sanction a move for the 25-year-old who is tied down at the Emirates until 2026.
Newcastle are currently short in the middle after Jonjo Shelvey’s unexpected exit to Nottingham Forest. Edwards reported yesterday that Manchester United’s Scott McTominay would be targetted in the summer with Leicester City’s James Maddison the preferred playmaker.
Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and Wolves’ Ruben Neves have also been discussed. Gallagher has been a long-term target dating back to the prior regime when loan moves were attempted. The player seems settled at Stamford Bridge.
Edwards is also reporting that Newcastle want a powerful striker similar to Chris Wood along with another versatile forward. This makes some sense as it gives Howe plenty of options in attack. Howe also sees Isak as a second striker or a wide forward despite his recent displays.
They will also attempt to add a young center-back likely right-footed. No targets are mentioned though the name of Benfica’s Antonio Silva has been touted in some circles. The 19-year-old would be an amazing if not highly unlikely addition.
The planning for what is shaping up to be an exciting summer is underway. If Newcastle can finish this season strong, a top-four finish could make the next transfer window one to remember.

Nah I appreciate that those numbers aren’t big but he’s been blighted by a small number of big injuries rather than persistent small ones.
In answer to your question, season before last, he picked up a 1 week injury in the second week of the season. Started the next 15 in a row, injured for 5 weeks, started the next 6 injured for 4 weeks, before starting the last 4 games.
Last season he played the first 8 games in a row before picking up an ankle injury, was out for 2 weeks and then back in the Matchday squad for the next 4 (on the bench) before starting the next 14 games before suffering a serious knee injury that needed surgery and ended his season.
This season he’s been completely injury free, being on the bench because Zinchenko is first choice and playing whenever Zinchenko is injured. I think he’s worth a punt but can understand why some have reservations.

All I’m saying is: they’ll still have to pass the coolaid, Eddie test…so, that ensures that they’re here for football reasons.
I didn’t use the term ‘glory hunter’ on purpose. ‘cos I’m not having a go… it’s more there’s a changing of the guard, so to speak.
The top 6 includes us now and if the ‘other’ one is still relevant, becomes a top 7.
Oh! We’re hovering around top 3-5.
…plus it’s obvious that we’re not following the ‘buy the league’ route.

You don’t think other clubs research players characters. We will be just as attractive to players who will turn Brighton down for us, you can’t have it both ways. I’m bowing out of this debate as I can’t see it getting anywhere.

Small injuries hamper a players rythm though, by the time he’s back up to speed he’s out again, look at that Max Cornet, every five games a daft little injury that keeps him out for a game or two, never match fit and out again.

OK let me get one thing straight here. I had a quick catch up earlier and was again found to be confused as to why the poster TDS was just about spending most of the day talking up Manure, post after post. I had to call this out as it’s just not acceptable on an NUFC blog IMO. I mean could you imagine him standing on the terraces or in a pub in Newcastle (match day) talking the same bull as he has done today. He wouldn’t last a minute. What’s the difference of doing the same on an NUFC blog and being called out for it? I mean the same fella has form for this where he has talked up LiVARfool, Spuds and Ashlie. He had talked them all up in equal sickly measures, I’m sorry but it’s not right as mentioned this is an NUFC football blog where we don’t like the likes of the above mentioned being talked up relentlessly by the same so called Toon fan.
So Raj what’s the difference with you jumping on TDS when he championed AshLie in the past which you did many a time didn’t you? To me also doing the same? Howay wee man What’s the difference?

Comment #53Ruddy we have some Red Hands married into our large family circle unfortunately 😀 😀 As for Armagh we have some of the best forwards in Ireland but are being held back by Kieran Mc Geeney he has the team playing with the handbrake on most of the time, he was a truly inspirational and majestic player in his day for the Orchard, but he is the Steve Bruce of gealic football. I fancy Derry or Tyrone to win the Ulster Championship this year, i pray it`s the former 😀 😀

Comment #54Raj, think of it this way….
Sign 4 real game changers and we cant compete, really? By your (and my) rationale we should be well placed to attract some very good players. 6 top end players seems excessive though and of course would be highly dependent upon outgoings and a huge sponsorship deal*
Everone can pick positions and quantity of players incoming but it requires a ton of assumptions. I think 4 top players with a smattering of promising youngsters will be great progress.
*I don’t think a 300M sponsorship is incoming even if we make CL.

That’s what I’m saying, he’s not had a lot of small injuries, but rather a few big injuries – knee surgery and shoulder surgery. If those two injuries are set aside his injury record has been rather normal, and the fact he’s been fit all season and played quite a bit this season (albeit secondary to Zinchenko) makes me think he’s put those issues behind him.

Comment #70May I suggest we all take a leaf out of Magics book and even TDS’s book
You can wind them 2 up all you like and they don’t get upset
Fenham like me and Raj wind people up but it’s just what we do there’s no malice and it’s only posters like Dazzler and Taco who get upset for other posters and make things worse
TDS is an obvious target for his stern views but from me it’s only banta calling him plastic
