Aye, where is the high threshold of ‘clear and obvious’ they keep referring to?!
Everyone will be different as to when they say ‘that’s enough’
I’m beginning to think VAR should not be a REF at all. They know too much and have seen too much. I think a lot of top Ref’s don’t make good VAR men because of this.
Fresh eye’s on the VAR, independent and trained maybe. Worth a go.

Abstained from the hooch since the autumn. Not sure how lads can slurp it all the time.

Comment #283Morning all. Mixed night for me, Basketball was a disaster but a win for England. In the first half you’d be forgiven for thinking England were the home team. Lovely slick attacking football, Rice took his chance, Kane showed his class and Grealish went for glory instead of using his side foot to pass the ball into the net. Italy were poor.
The ref set his stall out early, the first yellow for time wasting was about 24 minutes in. Interestingly Italy were allowed plenty of time to delay the penalty. Then a second yellow for timewasting. Luke Shaw is either an idiot or wasn’t paying attention. I’ll go with the former. What did he expect the ref to do when he went 10 yards past an available ball to get another? It was almost inevitable that just 54 seconds later he mistimed a tackle and got sent off. I would have hooked him after the first yellow, we were fortunate to see the game out.
Finally we come to Southgate. Has someone ripped out the last chapter of his “Big Boy’s book of Football Tactics”? Whatever he said at halftime we seemed to lose our verve. We invited Italy on to us and could have dropped points. Fortunately we didn’t. Beat Ukraine on Sunday and we are in a strong position to qualify. Play strong in both halves and it should be “job done”.
Apologies for the rant.

Comment #284TfB – the VAR needs to know the rules, that’s for sure. But if someone like me could look at that incident, see the specific rules (which I posted on here yesterday), then I could easily reach a conclusion. Literally the only thing that could indicate it was offside is that Felipe cleared it with “limited control”. I’d say that was more down to Felipe’s poor skill than the speed of the cross or anything else. That would be the minor consideration that might lead to me not overruling the ref if he’d disallowed that goal on the pitch but it’s nowhere near enough to do the opposite.
We’re always going to get subjective decisions on the pitch but I don’t think VAR should ever be subjective.

You made some of those points a bit better than I have struggled to..
🙂
Comparing past managers is difficult.
Football has changed over time and the focus on technical ability has been aided in part by more integration of coaches and players into the British clubs.
We have produced excellent crops of young, skillful players, especially in the attacking areas. Southgate has benefitted from that more than the others have in the past.
Records..
Southgate’s world cup – we beat Iran, Wales, scoring freely (wow) and couldn’t beat USA. Then a good result v Senegal who didn’t help themselves really.
The record says we got to the QF of the WC.

Comment #288Novo – when you consider there are many great international teams who are often in the mix for trophies, how is Southgate’s record of last 8 (and unlucky in that one), 2nd, and last 4 anything other than above average?
There’s Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Argentina, and Brazil who would all consider themselves around our level or better plus excellent teams like Croatia and Portugal in recent years. Not to mention the odd wildcard who have a great tournament.
It’s spot on to say England have amazing attackers right now. Kane is one of the best centre forwards in the world and when you add Saka, Rashford, Foden, and even other options like Grealish and Mount, that’s excellent from an attacking perspective.
But in defence? It’s no surprise that England play conservatively as we do not have a defence to match the attack.

Comment #289I’m going to answer my own question from earlier because I just checked the stats on BBC Sport. It says that Italy had 1 shot on target the whole match. So whatever England did in the 2nd half, it didn’t exactly invite a barrage of shots on Pickford’s goal and we were lucky to survive. They tightened things up and made it tough for Italy to score. The only Italy goal was due to a mistake from Maguire.

Comment #290Was out last night at my Latin and ballroom dancing class so missed the first half. Saw it was 2-0 and thought we must be playing well, this will be a good watch second half. I have never seen such a poor performance in years watching England. We seemed incapable of passing and retaining possession and offered absolutely zero threat. The Italians were quick to the ball and looked dangerous whenever they went forward, which was frequent. Very quick and incisive passing. Southgate did nothing while we racked up avoidable yellow cards. Where was Maddison? Gnonto looked very good.

Comment #292Saying the clock is ticking on Southgate as manager of England is like saying the clock is ticking on Trippier as an England player. It’s pretty likely that both will be done after the next international tournament but it doesn’t mean they can’t achieve a lot before then and doesn’t diminish what they’re doing now.

Comment #293It’s hard to win any tournament, no doubt.
My point is Southgate gets England about as far as expected, no more.
If people are happy with that fair enough.
To be considered “exceptional” he has to take England beyond expectation.
I hope he does but I doubt it.
I reckon any decent manager would have achieved what Southgate has done.
An exceptional manager would have won something.
He is lucky to be in the job.
The defence is an issue and it could be argued that he doesn’t select the best defenders. That’s his choice.
Playing two holding midfielders in every game, regardless who is the opposition. Really.
Henderson still in the squad. Come on, he should be moved on. He will be 34 at the Euros.

I think that selfish miss from Grealish had an effect, instead of going in to that second half knowing we’d won, we came back out knowing we’d be up against it and it clearly affected them. That was pure me, me, me from Grealish with that shot he put wide, instead of just side footing or putting his laces through it and getting the job done, he tried to make it look like a worldie, you know the way a keeper might acrobatically dive and punch a ball instead of simply catching it. I hope he got tore a new one off his manager and team mates for that.

Not just to you but a post I’ve just been thinking about writing on Howe leaving. When the TO first happened I thought it was just going to be as simple as offering Conte £16M a year and job done. Firstly we dodged a bullet there and we now know that it simply isn’t feasible throwing that kind of money around. Given our position at the time we couldn’t even prise Emery away from his position. Things have changed. Dramatically. If Howe was to leave then it wouldn’t be a disaster at all, Ashworth will already have his successor shortlisted, we can now attract the calibre of manager that everyone of the European giants could, I 100% do not want Eddie H as the next England manager but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if he was.

When player’s salaries began to go through the roof, the main argument in support of such huge sums was “their careers are so short”.
Now, with better conditioning, diets, injury recovery levels and fitness many players are playing top level into their mid thirties and beyond, GK’s into 40’s. Although this is still “short” compared to us poor buggers who work or worked till we drop, it’s a lot longer than those early days when salaries seemed justified. I notice however there is no great debate around wages being brought down as their careers are likely to be longer.
Like all things in life, things go up, but never back down. 🙂

Comment #311Novo – I think you’re underestimating experience. Every successful manager has that blend of experience and youth in their squad. Someone like Henderson to come on late in a game to offer calmness and control is very useful. I really don’t think a lot of football fans appreciate the complexities of football and therefore the value of experience. Why do you think there are no professional football managers who just played a lot of Championship Manager and watched a lot of football on TV?

Comment #317I’m with Novo on this view of Southgate – he’s not exceeding expectations given the calibre of players he has been gifted, the level of opposition in early stages of tournaments and given that some sides like Italy and Germany have underacheived during his time
He is poor at adapting during games, relies too much on favourites and reality is that basically who of top managers wants the job?
i certainly wouldn’t want to lose Eddie at this stage of our progress because i honestly believe he is the man for the job right now and we’d struggle to attract the right and better replacement
That time will obviously come but i doubt he would leave for even Man City given the call!
I doubt he’d choose england (though he’d be honoured) at this stage as he is one of those coaches who prefer day to day interaction and full days every day -he’s a workaholic
Later maybe but not before he’s got this project out of his system and won things with us or clearly failed – but then maybe chance would be gone anyway as England’s gaze would have moved on
Few of the top managers in PL even going back through Ferguson, Wenger, then up to current ones like Pep etc seem to be attracted to international jobs as the PL has grown in attraction
I’m more a Club man than ever and believe or not i hadn’t realised match was on last night or who we were playing until catching up on BBC news app as i went to bed around midnight
I have other interests to occupy me and for me NUFC fulfill entirely my sports need 🙂

You got me completely wrong on that front my friend. Did I want England to those or draw? NEVER.
Do I hate Southgate? Don’t even dislike the bloke.
Did I think the second half display was below par, compared to first, most definitely. Do I think the manager was somewhat responsible for that, oh fkn YES.
We have the best set of attacking players in world football at the moment but they are continually being let down by overly defensive management..

I don’t have a problem with picking experienced players who the manager knows and trusts, I think it goes with the territory. My problem is that Southgate has said that he’d always look at form as well (unlike most England managers). However, my issue is that it’s becoming readily apparent that he will take who he likes over form.
I appreciate qualifiers are a bit more important than a nations league match, and can appreciate that Henderson brings a bit more than his on-field capabilities (which are diminishing due to age). However, I cannot fathom how a player like Kalvin Phillips who has played a combined 344 minutes all season (less than 4 full 90 minutes and seemingly mostly as a sub) gets the nod over a Longstaff or Willock (or equivalent at a different team).
That’s not a particularly experienced player getting picked over who he plays for, and not on form at all IMO.
