Below is the team Eddie Howe has named for this evening’s pivotal match against Arsenal at St. James’ Park. This lineup features one change from the 3-1 win against Southampton last weekend with Alexander Isak in for Anthony Gordon.

Eddie Howe has started with the dynamic duo of Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak. Presumably, the system won’t change with Isak playing on the left. The bench gets a boost with the return of Allan Saint-Maximin though Sean Longstaff remains unavailable.
Here is who Mikel Arteta has selected for the Gunners.

Newcastle have another chance of enhancing their claim for Champions League football next season. It is shaping up to be a tight race for the final two coveted spots in the top four.
This match also holds implications in the title race. Arsenal may have to take all three points for any lingering hope of their first Premier League title in two decades. This is one massive match in May at St. James’ Park.

Comment #841Looking back with clarity it was probably never going to be our day yesterday.
Their finishing was better and their shithousery was a lot better.
Bring on dorty dorty Leeds Utd 😆

Comment #842True Fenham, but since they dish it out on here they should be prepared to take it too.
😉
The sad thing is the pretence of it. Why pretend to be something it is clear you are not? That is what I dislike about them.

Comment #843For the fact ManU lost as well I’m notvas worried, Leeds is probably a free hit, we don’t actually need to win or even draw it. We will best Brighton and Leicester at home and that leaves Chelsea as another free hit.
We need 6 points, not lose by many if we do lose and hope Liverpool don’t go on a rampage of goals in their next 3 games. We’re 7 ahead on goal difference.
2 wins and we’re probably through. So we have 2 free hits in the away games imo.
ManU are in a far more precarious position, they literally can’t lose a single game now or they’re out.
All this is presuming Liverpool win their next 3 but they will, they have something to fight for.
The only thing that can knock us out is ourselves if we get nervous and put in uncharacteristically bad performances. Yesterday wasn’t a bad performance so that’s encouraging and it will be extra motivation to beat Leeds. ANYTHING at Leeds is a bonus a point or all 3, because I genuinely believe we will win our 2 hone games.

Comment #844Aye, the pen shout looked like it knocked the wind out their sails a bit. Didn’t see any heads drop. Even wor Bruno having a bad day at the office, still wanting the ball, still trying to do something.
I’d start Isak and Wilson again at Leeds. Different game all together.
Or start AG out left with Isak up front and hoy Wilson on later.

Comment #845Leeds will do to us what they succesfully did to us at SJP…kick the sh1te out of Bruno and crowd him out…more of the same next week so Eddie needs to work on the solution.

If there’s a shithousery stat for yesterday, Arsenal were head and shoulders above us.
Possibly the first time this season we’ve been outdone on that metric. 😆

Comment #849I dont think Isak and Wilson will start again, they weren’t great when starting. I think we will see Wilson benched again with Maxi or Gordon playing left of Longstaff is out.
I think the beauty of bringing Wilson on is it changes things up and confuses the other team who were used to the style we play with Isak up top. That’s probably a big reason why it works so well when he comes on and why it didn’t work at all yesterday.
I think Howe knew this all along and its why he’s been reluctant to play both of them for so long, but he couldn’t ignore how well they played when they did cone on any longer.
I’d be very surprised if both started again tbh.

Comment #850Just checked the remaining fixtures for all teams.
Even if Liverpool win all there remaining games it only gives them 71 points.
We only need two wins from the remaining four games to beat them unless of course they catch us on goal difference which means them scoring 7 plus to catch up and then score more than we do on the two wins needed.
Looking at it they have more chance catching Man U as their goal difference is only 8 and Liverpools is 25.
So two wins, come on, last time we lost we went the next three games scoring 13 letting in 3.
We can do this, Eddie will rally the team.

Comment #852Exactly assassins this is why Brighton beating Man U was a good thing and Man U losing again yesterday was great too. The simple fact is we are the best place team in race.
I think there will be a reaction to yesterday and we will comfortably beat Leeds next weekend.
As much as I want Brighton to make the Europa (or the CL as long as it it not at our expense) and want Everton to get relegated, Everton getting some kind of result today also benefits us. Ramps up the pressure on Leeds.
Same if Leicester get a result today.

Isak and Wilson will get more joy at Leeds probably. Forgot about Maxi pal. If he trains well all week Eddie might chuck him in maybe.
Assassins,
Aye, wor Eddie has shown to be good at picking them up after a defeat and going on a romp. Cup finals all the way to the end now pal.

Comment #856If Liverpool lose one game we only need one win. That’s a lot of pressure on them and they have Leicester who need to fight for their lives and Leicester could turn up and upset them.
Aston Villa tough game for them and last game at Southampton and if the saints are relegated they will want to go out with a win to prove something.

For a long time Darnik thought he was a jinx and barred himself from watching.
Then hey-presto, Darnik gets gifted two tickets for Southampton and we win 3-1.
Get yersel a train ticket to Leeds and Sparky will have the ticket waiting at the door for you.
CL here we come. Problem solved! 😆

Comment #859I think people are making this Isak Wilson starting a bigger issue than it is, it wasn’t an experiment or something he was desperate to do, Longstaff was injured, ASM not ready and perhaps the same with Gordon. If Isak’s header goes in from a Wilson assist then the pairing was a success, I wouldn’t say the pairing was a failure on our part, Arsenal played brilliantly, they might have had a brace each against a lesser defence. I think it’s jumping the gun to say they’ll never start together again.

Sorry mate, just left the gym. I know it’s hard not to dish it out to the sad cretins, but honestly mate it’s best not to feed these oxygen thieves…oxygen. Starve them of it it’s all they are good for. You seem like a very level headed educated person, therefore way too good to engage with such pathetic individuals tbh.

Comment #863Raj – I’m watching the Fulham-Leicester game and so far Leicester have been very poor – they won’t be much opposition for Liverpool if they play like this!

You are probably right about ignoring them.
Raj,
A fair assessment on the Wilson/Isak discussion but I would not start them both for reasons I have expressed many time before yesterday’s game. During/after the game I didn’t complain that EH chose to though. To me we lost the game purely because we lost our heads after the pen decision and EH will ensure we don’t do that again.
