Burn, Isak And Wilson Start Against Brighton Tonight – Plus Surprising Fan Expectations

This is the team Eddie Howe has named for tonight’s important game against 6th-placed Brighton at St. James’ Park.

It looks like an unchanged side following last time out at Leeds United, as we had expected.

And here is the team that manager Roberto de Zerbi has selected for Brighton.

Not sure why Alexis Mac Allister is on the bench – maybe slight injury?

Newcastle can make a big leap forward towards Champions League qualification with a win tonight, but we will have to be at our best to beat a Brighton side that took apart Arsenal away 3-0 last weekend and were much the better side.

We have to get two wins in our final 3 games to ensure Champions League football for next season.

The remaining games after tonight’s match are against struggling Leicester City at home next Monday night and then Chelsea away on the final day of the season – a week on Sunday, May 28th.

So even without the win tonight, we can still win our final two games – let’s stay positive.

Only slightly more than 60% of fans think we will win this game tonight, which is a little bit of a surprise.

Bruno playing more of Longy roll today with the Big Joe out left and Willock on the right both playing a bit more forward. Seems to be working…maybe a bit more anonymous but somehow filling the gap we were missing I think.

Have to say, I’m done listening to the people telling me Liverpool aren’t getting favorite VAR reviews. That Wilson situation was much clearer than that nonsense Nunez penalty.

I looked pretty difficult for Wilson to avoid contact with his left leg. That’s why I thought it was a pen.

The speed/correctness of that VAR decision won’t matter. We are all over them. We are going to win this tonight.

AnyToon, it was nearly impossible to tell if Nunez was actually contacted by the defender. He stuck out his leg looking for the contact. Here, Wilson was clear tripped. It makes zero sense.

DKillers – and I’m fed up with people who don’t understand the role of VAR. If the on-field ref gives a pen then VAR has to prove it was a clear and obvious error and is definitely NOT a pen, in this case the VAR has to prove it’s a clear and obvious error and definitely IS a pen.

If the ref gave a penalty for a foul against Wilson, could VAR have proven that there definitely wasn’t contact? Probably not…it would probably have stood.

VAR did its job. Blame the on-field ref if you want to though. Old school…

I really hope we stop letting them off the hook in tricky corners and situations by giving fouls away and relieving the pressure on them.

mondziu – I saw no definite significant contact on the replays. Also Wilson’s body language didn’t convince me to be honest.

I think Wilson could have made it easier for the ref to give that to be honest. Many of the best attackers in the world are sneaky like that at getting more penalties.

Be under no illusions this merseyside ref will give us nothing tonight, how he was chosen to be in charge of this match is an absolute disgrace. On a positive note Eddie has us set up to totally nullify them playing out from the back, and the lads are playing superb stuff so far HWTL.

Wilson has been shocking! Bruno has been shocking! His injury is clearly troubling him more lately its the only reason for these performances.

I hope we don’t live to regret all this possession.

Our passing is so frustrating, either too short or overhit. If we could be slightly more accurate with our final balls we’ll be 3-0 up already.
