Aston Villa took the lead against Liverpool at Anfield after 27 minutes through Ramsey, and as it looked like Villa would win the game and Newcastle would therefore officially qualify for the top four, Firmino equalized after 89 minutes.
But with Liverpool drawing 1-1, that now means that Newcastle only need to draw on Monday night: we in fact need one point in the last 2 games to ensure we qualify for Champions League.
But even if Liverpool can win their last game, at bottom of the league Southampton, and we lose our final 2 games, we could still top the Reds on goal difference.
And even though the referee played a ridiculous 10 minutes of added time to let the Reds score the winner, they didn’t do that.
Here is the latest Premier League table after today’s games, where Manchester United won at Bournemouth with a goal from Casemiro after 9 minutes.
Club | Matches | Goal Diff. | Points | |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Man City | 38 | 61 | 89 |
2 | Arsenal | 38 | 45 | 84 |
3 | Man United | 38 | 15 | 75 |
4 | Newcastle | 38 | 35 | 71 |
5 | Liverpool | 38 | 28 | 67 |
6 | Brighton | 38 | 19 | 62 |
7 | Aston Villa | 38 | 5 | 61 |
8 | Tottenham | 38 | 7 | 60 |
9 | Brentford | 38 | 12 | 59 |
10 | Fulham | 38 | 2 | 52 |
We are sure that Eddie Howe will say we need to beat Leicester on Monday night to make absolutely sure – and why not on our last home game of this magnificent season.
In fact, Eddie Howe will desperately want to win our final two games, with the last game being at Chelsea on Sunday, 28th May.
And why not, indeed.
🙂
Also, if we win our final two games, we will finish 3rd top above Manchester United on goal difference, even if the Red Devils also win their final two games.
HWTL!

Comment #123Delighted for Forest. They got hammered by some for the number of signings they made but the vast majority didn’t realise that they had no choice, and just followed the media narrative. They actually bought some lovely players and play a nice style of football. Their supporters are passionate and I know from the Forest lads I’m acquainted with, that they loved the trip to St James and Newcastle as a city. All we need now is to beat Leicester and see Everton go down 🙂

Comment #127Munster I said this all along – Forest had two options – roll through dice and spend or resign yourselves to going down, take the parachute money and see what happens in a year or 10.
What people ignore was that when they came up they had hardly any senior players left due to loans and contracts ending. The were forced to either spend in lots of areas or play U21s.
Realistically they had to gamble and it has paid off.

Yeah it’s more of an ache than a pain, but I’d had arthritis for years so was used to it, this ache is in the ligaments/tendons so it’s a stiff annoying ache

Leipzig won’t flip him after losing Szoboszlai (and possibly Gvardiol to Citeh)

Agreed. Stellar job done by all.
The real key is doing it for the long term. Young players are key to this.

Comment #137I trust us to get some great, and the right type of, players if we secure CL. I am glad that Szoboszlai liked the tweet though as there was a Bundesliga programme earlier saying RB were unlikely to let Szoboszlai leave as well as Nkunku (who is apparently going to Chelsea). They also said RB are unlikely to have a release clause as such; instead the ‘clause’ is a gentleman’s agreement price where RB are willing to start negotiations.
Anyway, let’s get CL and have a beautiful summer watching Eddie, Dan and co intelligently put together a squad that will do us proud next season!

I won’t be crying into my cup of tea if I find that Szoboszlai.
Smarter people than me are running NUFC and there is always competition for top signings so nothing is guaranteed.
We are in great position to sign 2-3 top players and I love that.

1 – this was just posted an hour ago re Szoboszlai: https://twitter.com/plettigoal/status/1659997798056488963?s=61&t=oE9r0YZuqCwo-geMmhvYtQ
2 – I read that he has fallen out with RB. Not sure about what but with no.1 in mind, it seems he is definitely wanting away

Comment #149Yeah, young players are important, but they must be good enough to feature and compete for a place. Players like Trippier, Pope and Burn are older and have been superb signings too though. I think the critical thing is fee and wages, and confidence that the player will perform for the entirety of their contract.

I know he wants away.
The only realistic option for him is PL (given Real Madrid have their eyes on other players)
That is the one thing I worry about. Citeh could sign him if they wanted to of course. But Citeh aside if NUFC want him we should be in pole position all thing considered.
He is not going to Spurs or Chelsea. Man U and Lpool need to strengthen in other areas…

Comment #156It’s going to be a critical window, but there’ll also be great advances occurring with development of the infrastructure within the club too. We are now on the sort of ride that City have been on for the past 15 years, without the wriggle room they’ve had with FFP, which I don’t object too, because that has needed reform, and even further reform, but we do have the benefit of being able to analyze the mistakes these clubs have made, and learn from them, and we have real financial muscle to throw into infrastructure, which is critical to sustained growth. You have to pinch yourself really.

Comment #158Is Pep going to actually buy anyone this summer though? Does he need to? Although they say you have to keep investing!
Going to be interesting who we go for, who doesn’t want to be part of a project that has continual unending investment, FFP permitting of course 😆

Comment #160I keep repeating this but our main issue with FFP will be wages not transfer fees. That is where NUFC need to be careful in many ways.
