Aston Villa took the lead against Liverpool at Anfield after 27 minutes through Ramsey, and as it looked like Villa would win the game and Newcastle would therefore officially qualify for the top four, Firmino equalized after 89 minutes.
But with Liverpool drawing 1-1, that now means that Newcastle only need to draw on Monday night: we in fact need one point in the last 2 games to ensure we qualify for Champions League.
But even if Liverpool can win their last game, at bottom of the league Southampton, and we lose our final 2 games, we could still top the Reds on goal difference.
And even though the referee played a ridiculous 10 minutes of added time to let the Reds score the winner, they didn’t do that.
Here is the latest Premier League table after today’s games, where Manchester United won at Bournemouth with a goal from Casemiro after 9 minutes.
Club | Matches | Goal Diff. | Points | |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Man City | 38 | 61 | 89 |
2 | Arsenal | 38 | 45 | 84 |
3 | Man United | 38 | 15 | 75 |
4 | Newcastle | 38 | 35 | 71 |
5 | Liverpool | 38 | 28 | 67 |
6 | Brighton | 38 | 19 | 62 |
7 | Aston Villa | 38 | 5 | 61 |
8 | Tottenham | 38 | 7 | 60 |
9 | Brentford | 38 | 12 | 59 |
10 | Fulham | 38 | 2 | 52 |
We are sure that Eddie Howe will say we need to beat Leicester on Monday night to make absolutely sure – and why not on our last home game of this magnificent season.
In fact, Eddie Howe will desperately want to win our final two games, with the last game being at Chelsea on Sunday, 28th May.
And why not, indeed.
🙂
Also, if we win our final two games, we will finish 3rd top above Manchester United on goal difference, even if the Red Devils also win their final two games.
HWTL!

I know 😀
Looked into it a few month back as we haven’t been there for so long and the last time I took any notice you had to qualify being 4th but thankfully the rules have changed. I’d of been sweating if it was the same as it’s bit us in the arse once before

Comment #282The only downside to Liverpool’s result is the fact it means more days and nights where blood pressure goes up a notch and nerves are left jangling.
Newcastle supporters experienced that feeling for the first time in many a year on Thursday.
They passed the test with flying colours.
Roll on Monday’s match.

Comment #284We have a professional set up we play to win every game why would we relax after securing qualification? I wanted it yesterday so I can be relaxed personally. The teams are pro they can relax after chelsea match. With points to play for every game is important there are no meaningless games. Every position is worth extra millions

Comment #285Excellent article on how we play here:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2023/05/21/newcastle-united-secret-weapon-rivals-premier-league/
The writer describing our secret weapon as “The Swarm”
Highlight:
“Newcastle United’s ability to put pressure on teams deep inside their own half and win the ball high up the pitch was a complete shift in tactical approach implemented on Howe’s instruction last summer.
They have become one of the best in Europe at doing so, putting pressure on their opponents and attacking, down both flanks and through the middle, in a perpetual state of motion.
It can leave teams feeling dizzy and confused, but it is not the patterns of play or the angles of their pressing that breaks teams, it is the fact it does not stop. Newcastle just keep coming at you until your resistance is shattered, physically and mentally.
It is like trying to contain a swarm of black and white wasps with each player packing a sting. They are strong and tough. They can be spiteful too, relishing physical contact.”

Comment #287I was quite worried pre Brighton but we did so well. If we are stuck for bodies, at least the likes of Gordon and Anderson will be full of beans for the pressing game.

I have no idea what the money will be like but I do know qualifying for the champions league will give us a lot more to spend and a lot more room to go big.
Really exciting summer to come!

Comment #292Logically, it would have been better to have qualified with a Villa win yesterday, however, I do feel the emotional thinking of qualification coming tomorrow in our last home game has a big pull. It’s irrelevant now anyway.
This one is for all those match attending fans. The ones before Ashley who felt they could no longer go for many reasons, the ones who sat through those years, they all deserve this moment imo. I know we haven’t and don’t all agree (quite a lot you could say), but there’s never a doubt the love for this club it’s fans have, in Newcastle and beyond.

Comment #297Well I seem to have rousted ya blog socialists this Sunday morning. Surprised they have been on as I assume they were all pissed last night and I would have assumed they were still in their beds in their hovels.
But I have to say it is excellent keeping the mothers at bay – and not to let them take over the blog.

Comment #298It says everything of how good Eddie is and how good we have been as a team as we have the highest touches in an opponents box across Europe’s five top leagues.
1. Newcastle
2. Barcelona (won La Liga)
3. Napoli (won Serie A)
Unbelievable Jeff!

Comment #300The Szob would be class Mund. He’s incredible, but I’d still want a 6.
Very interesting chat on Loaded Mag about this, saying that Thuram isn’t a ‘beast’ of a 6, but probably more like a deep playmaker, but would be ideal to give Bruno a break, and we could still play both.

How you feeling with us being so close to having the champions league tune playing across SJP once again?
I don’t even think it will fully sink in for me until we have that first game

Thuram isn’t a beast but he’d be a good signing.
We could definitely be in the hat for Rice this summer. I do believe there will be a few surprises this summer that none of us would of imagined

There are no words that I can use to describe the feelings this season. It’s been a very special campaign and so much more to look forward to.
I asked you as you’ve been through it all as a legacy fan, the hard times and the good and after 14 years of Ashley this day never seemed possible.
