Here is the Match-Cam video from last night’s 0-0 home draw with Leicester City, with the point qualifying Newcastle for the Champions League next season, for the first time since the 2003-2004 season under the incomparable Sir Bobby Robson.
In the Match-Cam we see the players arriving, warming up, then different video footage of the game from ground level, and these videos seem to be really popular.
There are clips at half-time with three male owners having a shootout challenge – if you can call it that.
đ
And at the end there are new shots of the players and their families and Eddie How meeting the Chairman and getting a big hug from ….. Amanda Staveley.
During the game we did everything but score and win, but in the 92nd minute Nick Pope made an absolutely brilliant save, otherwise we could have even lost the game.
But we got the draw, and all of Tyneside is now celebrating an amazing and historic accomplishment for this season.

Comment #121Iâve been a Newcastle supporter for almost 60 years now, and like all other supporters I had periods of great expectation and periods of great disappointment, until nowâŠ..
Currently, most supporters would say they are very optimistic about the future of NUFC but I feel that isnât the right word. Optimism has an inherent fragility to it. Like the âglass half fullâ attitude, it has an ingredient of hope but no guarantee, no certainty or promise of fulfilment.
I wouldnât say Iâm now optimistic about the future of Newcastle United, Iâm absolutely, categorically, cast-iron certain that there is only greater greatness and spectacular success ahead because there is now an unshakeable, solid foundation for that confidence.
Bejabers, what the future holds is spectacular!
P.S. It might help to hum âLand of Hope and Gloryâ while you read this.
P.P.S. My Player of the Season, Trippier.
Goal of the Season, I still go for Miggyâs against Leicester last Christmas. Pope kick out to the goal, 25 seconds, 7 passes. Brill.

Comment #128Player of season Longstaff or Joelinton for me. Burn massively underrated too. Bruno fantastic but not great the last few games which will make his chances smaller. Isak Almiron missed too many games otherwise they’d be in. Pope Trippier great too although Popes largely mentioned because we have the best defence but that’s an 11 man job under Eddie so it’s not just because of him.

Agreed, this pass was magic. Many point to Isak’s run against Everton, but for me this pass will be the thing to remember.
As for goals, I loved Isak’s shot against Brentford.

The timing, the speed, the sense of geometry in space…
And such an unconventional gesture in modern Football… wich mean creativity.
Just beautifull.
And most of the time, it bring nothing…. combined to Isak finish… skills, touch, reflex, cold blood…
Definitively the best action of the year for me.

Comment #132Trips deserves POTS for me – he’s been an unbelievable captain and has led the club with honour and distinction on and off the pitch. He is a true winner and has helped instil that mentality into the rest of the team. Howe tells the team how he wants them to play, Trips has ensured it’s done on the pitch.
Joelinton was a beast from the moment Howe put him in midfield and has gone from strength to strength but I don’t think we can or should underestimate Trippier’s impact on the whole squad since he arrived.
Botman is clear of Isak for YPOTS for me too, his impact on our defence has been immense. Isak has been phenomenal too though.

Comment #138In part as a response to Fenham to Chalfont, but also to stir the pot a little on the sensitive topic of overperformance. I do agree we are, where we are on merit. Still, I think we overperformed in a way.
Many of our players had the season of their careers. We will see, how many maintain that level long term. I certainly hope they will, but let’s see how they react to increased competition in their positions after the summer transfer window or whether complacency doesn’t become an issue with some, similarly to ‘second season syndrome’ with promoted teams.
Also, we had most of our team fit and available for the best part of the season and were able to field a pretty stable starting 11 all season long. That may not always be the case in the future. Just take a look at this stats:
The first stat shows, that there is a very small pool of players Eddie trusts to play a bigger role in the team.
No of players with more than 450 minuter in PL this season (5 full games):
Man City 18
Arsenal 18
NUFC 15
Man Utd 22
Liverpool 21
The second and third show our reliance on leaders. Trips have not missed a single game this season.
No of players with more than 2250 minutes in PL (25 full games):
Man City 6
Arsenal 9
NUFC 10
Man Utd 4
Liverpool 6
No of players with more than 3000 minutes in PL:
Man City 1
Arsenal 4
NUFC 5
Man Utd 2
Liverpool 2
With more games next season we can’t field the same team every game. We need more bodies, competition for places and reasonable squad rotation. Building strength in depth is going to be crucial this summer and no easy challenge for Eddie and Dan.

Comment #145I donât like the phrase âoverperformedâ as itâs not strictly true. It only works for me in context.
ie., NUFC have exceeded most peopleâs expectations this season, and as such have overperformed.
We have undoubtedly exceeded peopleâs expectations. Thatâs a fact.
Next Season, most people/pundits etc. will expect us to fail relative to this season. Gary Neville led the way by stating on Monday that finishing 6th next Season âshould not be seen as failureâ – already lowering the bar!
I prefer to listen to Eddie Howe, when he describes every players contribution as âtheir willingness to learn and listen and try to improve at every training session and every gameâ
To which he added, âwe havenât got there yet, all of the players can still improve and I expect more from themâ.
So the existing squad can get better and therefore are certainly not âover performingâ. Itâs all semantics and understanding. We should all be cautious of what phrases we use, particularly me! đ

100% we deserve to be where we are but I also believe we punched above our weight a touch, we were competing against teams who had to juggle CL football and as you say some key players stayed fit for most of the season. Whether we like it or not Lpool had Jota, Firmino and Diaz out for sizeable chunks. Our squad depth is almost threadbare as we’ve witnessed by simply seeing the affect losing a player like Longstaff has on the team. All this will be addressed in the summer and we’ll be fighting with an even keel.

Omgosh!
That jordan gadj is the absolute acme of clueless!!!
Hilarious in his misunderstanding of team sport…only someone as self-serving could spew such wrong-headed shoite.
It totally sticks in their craw that they have to give(?) credit to Eddie!
Where do they think Ă©lite coaches come from? Just grow on trees or something?
đ
Eddie Howe: coach of the decade for bringing afc Bournemouth from minus points in league 2, bottom of the pile, in a few short years, then establishing them as a PL club. All the while with zero cash, 11.5k(max) crowds, with no pull of big name, lights, bells and whistles. Little old afc Bournemouth!
He is a classic example of ‘where’ Ă©lite coaches come from… ie unremarkable playing career, sometimes, but not always, career ending injuries, nothing special as players etc.
Let’s have a little check back at some previous, accepted Ă©lite coaches, shall we…
Ferguson
Wenger
Mourinho
Paisley
To name 4 in recent times.
The guy is 45(?) Already has 600+ games under his belt.

Well said, I hoped my expression “overperformed in a way” was enough, but I see your point and agree. What I meant was an element of luck with regard to injuries, but also the sustainability of players’ form.
As for Eddie’s comments I wouldn’t expect him to say anything else. It would be disastrous man management (in football or any other organisation/business).

I agree – “overperform” is the same as “giving it 110%” – To me it’s meaningless. You can’t overperform – you can exceed expectations – which is a sign that people underestimated how good you were, or the expectations were so low it was an easy target to beat.
For us it’s the former, we exceeded expectations because Howe and the players are better than people thought we were.
Chelsea being off it, and Liverpool starting slow is irrelevant IMO. Chelsea have tied one hand behind their back with their spending, and unless Poch can get a tune out of a mixed bag of midfielders and wingers (and no really good strikers at all) they will not recover from this season any time soon. Klopp keeps crying that he’s skint and can’t compete and has lost a lot of players on free transfers at the end of this season (which frees up wages but does sweet FA for their transfer kitty).
Spurs are Spurs – When Kane inevitably leaves they are pretty screwed.
My prediction is this year’s top 4 could well be the long term top 4 (especially if Qatar buys Man Utd) – with Arsenal slipping in and out for one of the others every so often.

I certainly hope so and trust the hierarchy to do their best. That said, our recruitment so far has been spot on and I find it hard to expect them to be infallible long term. As Eddie said, this is going to be the most important transfer window ever. We need to bring 4-5 top players. Do it right, and we’re here to stay at the very top of the PL, steadily closing the revenue and thus the FFP gap to the established Top6 and challenging for trophies way before scheduled. Have a miss or two in this window and we’re with 2 games a week and a thin squad and Gary Neville’s comments would not be that much off the mark.
