There’s a good report in the Football Insider that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is willing to sell 25-year-old Scottish left-back Kieran Tierney to Newcastle for a reasonable £30M fee.
Oleksandr Zinchenko was first choice at left back for the Gunners last season, and there seems little opportunity for the 37 times Scottish International, and he seems even keen to move to Newcastle, with it being nearer to Scotland.
Football Insider report that Tierney earns around £110K/week at the Gunners, and he joined the North London club for £25M from Celtic in 2019.
So it seems like his wages wouldn’t be a problem at Newcastle and the deal will be helped if Kieran really wants to join Newcastle, which has been fairly widely reported.
Tierney arrived at Arsenal to some fanfare from Celtic in the summer, of four years ago.
The Isle of Man born player then held down the left-back role for the majority of his time there, although a negative is that Tierney seems to suffer a number of injuries, which keeps him on the sidelines too much.
A knee injury that required surgery a year ago cut short his season as Arsenal finished out of a Champions League place a year ago.
Mikel Arteta moved to bring in the reliable Zinchenko last summer, and the rest is history, with Tierney seemingly now having no future in London.
We think Kieran would be a very decent buy for Newcastle for £25M to £30M, and it would be money well spent.
What do you think?

Comment #3Doesn’t matter if it’s Steve Watson Lewis Miley or anybody else who is youngest player etc, it’s just lovely to see decent talent coming through and being given the chance to play by EH. Long may it continue.
I see we’re linked with Viktor Gyokere from Coventry, a young striker who’s done well this season. But quoted at £20-25m, which sounds a lot but could be the new norm for buying young talent even from a division below.
Tierney a yes if we cold sort out his injuries. 30m is too much to spend on someone who would be injured as often as he has been. No doubting his talent, only his injury record.

Comment #5I’d be all over Kieran Tierney for LB as he is exactly the type of LB we will need. I’m sure he will be given a rigorous medical examination to see if any of them previous injuries have any impact on him moving forward. I’m confident he will be fine.
I think we’d get him for around £25m and at 26 his best years are ahead of him.

It’s unbelievable about Joselu and Real Madrid. I think they are going for him as he is proven in La Liga, cheaper option as they’re going to put so much of their transfer kitty on signing Jude Bellingham.

Comment #7Will save the reposts from previous.
Tierney could be a good option if he can stay fit. I would still prefer Kerkez though and he would cost a lot less, is younger and not hand a PL rival our money.

Comment #9One thing about FFP and comparisons to teams like Chelsea….our income will not remain stagnant. We have good business people involved in running the club. A CL club is more attractive to brands looking to be linked with a team. Potential smaller partners (below shirt-level) will also look at how many Newcastle games were televised. Income will continue to increase. As far as wages, there are going to be a good number of players coming off the wage bill – the names we’ve all been discussing (Hayden, Hendricks, Fraser, etc.). So you replace some of these players with younger players who won’t be getting £100k per week, and then you’re capable of adding a few larger salaries.

Comment #10Taco – doesn’t matter what the rules are, the richest clubs will invest a huge amount of time and money into looking into any loopholes and how to circumvent the rules. Less wealthy clubs can’t afford to pay lawyers millions to do this and also potentially to defend against any potential charged from alleged breaches.
The rich always have more options available to them than everyone else.
In theory, FFP makes clubs more sustainable and this makes perfect sense. It does stop a club from taking on too much debt or taking ridiculous risks. But it also means that we can’t do what Chelsea or Man City did before, we have to build up slowly while increasing our revenue streams.

Comment #11Fantastic season and now we get to look forward with all our transfer fantasies to the window opening.
While we will focus the big money on the younger up and coming stars I think we may see 1 or 2 more senior experienced players come in who have been in the CL or Europe before. Not sure who but seems something Howe has prioritized in the past with regard to PL experience, so that thinking might extend to Europe as well.

Comment #12I think people forget that Tierney is a very good LCB so could fill that role BDB does when we turn in to a three, how many times have we seen BDB in a lovely position to whip a cross straight in but passes it to the nearest available, Tierney in the position and he’s getting about eight assists a season.

Comment #15The more I learn about FFP the more I’m convinced that it’s sole purpose is to protect the interest of the established “big clubs.”
I also feel that the EPL is, belatedly, taking action against Manchester Blues and Everton because of our takeover.
The EPL cannot be seen to be taking an aggressive approach to our expenditure while allowing other clubs to do as they please.
I also suspect that the Manchester Blues legal team will rip raggy holes in the rule book.
Financial legislation is very complex and the people who make the rules are the same people who know where the loopholes are and advise accordingly.

I am not disagreeing with any of that.
One of the many benefits NUFC has is learning from others mistakes. FFP is very relevant but it is not the be all and end all. What NUFC are doing is completely within the rules and where we are now (already) is brilliant.
Other clubs will fall as we rise and within the “rules”. It is simply a question of time in my opinion. NUFC have very smart people in charge and are constantly improving the basics of how to run a football club. We will have setbacks, it would be foolish to think otherwise, but we are on the right path.

Good points. In a nutshell FFP has very little to do with fair play really – that is why I always describe it as Orwellian…
“Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.”
“Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”
“It was merely the substitution of one piece of nonsense for another.”
“If you want to keep a secret, you must also hide it from yourself.”
etc etc

Of course it is, it’s buttered up to save clubs like Bury but it’s put them out of the league, relegated Reading and Derby while the rich clubs flout it. If Man U can legally spend x amount within the limits of FFP then every club should be able to spend the same, how can you compete with a team who can pay 10 players £250K pw.

Comment #19We’re in an advantagous position where we will have first dabs on any potential MENA organisations that want to promote their businesses internationally.
We don’t have a plethora of sponsors as the self proclaimed elite clubs do. It is a free hit for our marketing department, they cannot do anything but improve our revenue.

Sky Germany report there were talks between Szoboszlai’s reps and Newcastle: as previously reported, attacker has a €70 million clause. It’s also thought his salary would not be a problem for Magpies.

Patently clear Szoboszlai wants to join Newcastle, but whether they’ll pay €70m is another matter. Guess it’ll be on them next to either meet release clause or make an offer.

Comment #24Raj, Wigan and Reading have both been heavily sanctioned for financial irregularities too. A fairer distribution of the wealth that is circulating in the English game would prevent clubs going bust and a situation such as the one at Wigan were players have not been paid.
The thing with the soft salary cap, where only a certain percentage of income can be spent on the team, is that the top clubs will make huge profits. These profits will end up in the pockets of the shareholders.
The clubs income should be used to grow the clubs not to line the pockets of wealthy individuals.

Just seen he is from Man island… so not truly scottish?
By the way, as Man isn’t affiliated to FIFA or UEFA, for wich team players of the island are entitled to play? Any national team of the UK?

Ok I can…He plays for Scotland and he is 25 so he cant change now but he could have played for other UK nations in theory.

Comment #37The release clause for Szoboszlai, as far as I understand it, isn’t built into his contract. Apparently it is a ball park figure between RB and Szoboszlai where, if met (or close to it), RB agree that a club can enter negotiations. A ‘soft’ release clause of sorts. Therefore monies would go direct to RB, and not to Szoboszlai to pay off RB.
