The 2022-2023 season turned out to be one of Newcastle’s most successful seasons ever, in the modern era – certainly in the Premier League.
We got to 4th place and Champions League qualification for Newcastle – for the first time in 20 years, with 71 points, and we had a terrific goal difference of + 35, our highest ever in the PL.
Now we come to the difficult choice of who was Newcastle’s player of the season?
As some context, here are the previous players of the season on our blog, which I founded way back in 2007.
Season | Player | Vote Percentage |
---|---|---|
2007/08 | Habib Beye | 51% |
2008/09 | Sebastien Bassong | 68% |
2009/10 | Jose Enrique | 37% |
2010/11 | Cheick Tiote | 38% |
2011/12 | Fabricio Coloccini | 36% |
2012/13 | Fabricio Coloccini | 24% |
2013/14 | Mike Williamson | 24% |
2014/15 | Daryl Janmaat | 55% |
2015/16 | Rob Elliot | 40% |
2016/17 | Matt Ritchie | 59% |
2017/18 | Jamaal Lascelles | 51% |
2018/19 | Salomon Rondon | 36% |
2019/20 | Martin Dubravka | 48% |
2020/21 | Callum Wilson | 30% |
2021/22 | Joelinton | 76% |
2022/23 | Trippier | 34% |
And here is our final league position in the Premier League.
Club | Matches | Goal Diff. | Points | |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Man City | 38 | 61 | 89 |
2 | Arsenal | 38 | 45 | 84 |
3 | Man United | 38 | 15 | 75 |
4 | Newcastle | 38 | 35 | 71 |
5 | Liverpool | 38 | 28 | 67 |
6 | Brighton | 38 | 19 | 62 |
7 | Aston Villa | 38 | 5 | 61 |
8 | Tottenham | 38 | 7 | 60 |
9 | Brentford | 38 | 12 | 59 |
10 | Fulham | 38 | 2 | 52 |
I have included 12 players for selection.

Comments are welcome, but please respect other readers and their opinions – thanks.

He well and truly Bruced Lejuene mate. He ruined his career here and I agree he was a top defender who would thrive in todays era

Comment #88Clint to answer your question yes the possibility of being stabbed was on my mind when choosing Seville over Rome. Not convinced our good record vs Mourinho teams compensates for that.

I was interested in a comment you made in the previous thread, you said you were getting Sky, Prime, Disney etc and that it would cost you £800pa for all sports as well. Did you mean in total or on top of what you are paying
If that is in total pray do tell me how?

I don’t worry too much who we play as I think we will give any team a game. But ideally I hope we avoid dodgy places for fans (Turkey, Marseille etc etc) and far flung trips that cost fans more to get to and provide less prep and proper recovery time for players due to travel distance.
Simple logic really.

Comment #99LeJeune was great for us under Rafa on the left side of the back 3, with Schar on the other side, both pinging long pin point crossfield balls for Miggy and Ayoze Perez to hair after on the counter. Very classy centre back altogether, bit slow though, realistically, for this side, and the high line, high risk reward style we play.

Comment #100Interesting to see some of the earlier POTS given that many of them came in for some real criticism at times.
Bassong for one.

Turkey can be a whole heap of woe for an away supporter.
Russia=thugs, too.
We can give anyone a game, defo.
That can come at a price for fans from disgruntled homers.

Comment #107Speaking of Ayoze Perez, like LeJeune, another of my favorite players from those days, gone from surplus at Leicester, now relegated, to Betis, in beautiful Seville, sixth in LaLiga, playing in this years Europa League, in that famous and iconic 60000 seat stadium, and still on EPL money. Gotta be happy with that.

Comment #111Everton are in more financial bother. It is alleged that Moshiri was still receiving funds from Usmanov after he was sanctioned by the government.
The Treasury’s sanctions police are said to be investigating Everton’s finances.

All players come in for some criticism, it is just the modern way. Very short term thinking and people don’t get why players are not robots – Botman aside obviously.
🙂
The role of a coach is to develop and improve players.
The role of a fan is to support the players through thick and thin.
No alternative strategy is better IMO.

Of course I am sure players can deal with travel, prep, recovery time. I still prefer if we can play closeby and Man U can travel further afield though. Let them cope with it.

Comment #120I’ve gone for Trippier for POTS. He’s been immense this season and has oozed in class and leadership. A calming influence to our back four and always puts a shift in. His assists this season and linkup play with Almiron has been wonderful to watch. One of our best ever captains. A real leader.
