Newcastle put in another good performance last night in holding Chelsea to a 1-1 draw in Atlanta, but the goal we conceded was again a little sloppy with one pass splitting our defense down the middle.
We’ll have to sharpen up in defense a little but the big news from last night’s game was how good 17-year-old Jamie Miley looked against a Chelsea star midfield.
This lad seems to have everything and for his age, he looks so composed and classy.
Eddie Howe knows all about Miley from the second half of last season when he trained with the first team but performances like this and Howe has to think about playing the lad this season.
Newcastle’s goal came just before halftime and it was due to a surging run from the impressive Anthony Gordon and a defense-splitting pass to the former Atlanta player who stroked it into the net with that left foot of his first time.
A classic goal from the Paraguyan captain, who shaded the Man of the Match last night – fitting for him to be back in Atlanta.
Nick Pope replaced Dubravka at halftime for his first minutes in the preseason, and he showed with some excellent saves how important he is to this Newcastle side, he’s the best goalkeeper in England at the moment.
Here is a 9-minute video from NBC Sports on the 1-1 draw last night.
And I have been watching Craig Hope’s new YouTube channel for a few weeks and Craig is always entertaining and has some very good insights into what is happening with the team and the club.
Here are some oif his thoughts on last night’s game where he praises the young Lewis Miley for an excellent display.
Things are looking really good for Newcatsle at the moment, but we still need two or three signings before the end of August.
Comments are always welcome on this blog.

IF that deal is true then the add on amount to even £2m more I’d still say we have a poor deal!
Looking on all the Leeds forum’s they are saying they have landed a top Championship keeper on the cheap,I’d definitely agree with that statement given Darlow’s record & experience!

Comment #4Just wondering, anyone felt cringe watching Cucurella running with his mop hair? Looks worse during Almiron’s goal, it looks like his hair made him unbalanced….

Comment #5Scott – the internet (I know, not a great start) has Darlow’s wage at £30kpw with us and 2 years outstanding on his contract. Transfermarkt also has his value at just £1m.
It’s perfectly possible that this £400k figure means nothing too.

As far as I’m aware I’m in Div 3
If I’m not can you advise? I was away to to Halifax and back yesterday so as I wasn’t around I’m not 100% sure that I’m in or not?

Comment #7I do think Craig is correct in the extended adjustment period to EH both in terms of intensity and tactics. In a sense the player we are getting this window is Anthony Gordon, and the bedded in version of Tonali will arrive around the holidays. Even if they did have the ability to “do a Chelsea” and splash cash all over the place I suspect it wouldn’t work. Actually…it didn’t work at Chelsea either.

Comment #10When Leeds emerged as the destination for Darlow I read that they had nipped in ahead of Bournemouth because they offered a bigger fee?! !
What did Bournemouth offer then??

I’d say with his experience £1m is very low especially when they are talking £15 for the Leeds keeper sale!
Anyway if the club are happy & the figures are true then so be it!

Comment #12re: Miley – it’s like I watched a completely different game than everyone esle. Forgetting a second that he’s only 17, I think he was just OK last night and certainly not as good as he was on Sunday vs Villa. Especially the 1st half he played a lot like a Jack Colback; very negative and wasn’t finding space off the ball. Go back and watch how many time the CBs had no outlet. He did grow into the game in the 2nd half and had better link up play, but still coughed the ball up multiple times including the turnover that led to the Gallagher chance where he had a bad touch just outside our box and then got muscled off the ball. He’s a great talent and looks to have a bright future but he’s not Prem ready at this point.

Comment #15I saw a report that Mr Bruce recommended 2 managers to NUFC – Eddie Howe and Stephen Gerrard.
I’m glad they picked Wor Eddie!
I’m also glad they didn’t pick the other guy was was “Sackec” by Aston Villa.

Comment #16We had the best defence when it sat deep.
When Eddie set us up more offensively and pushed the team 20 yards further forward, it became susceptible to pace.
It’s great wanting more attackers but we do not have the cash. The priority is more pace at the back.
And do not get me started on our centre backs and corners.

Comment #23On Darlow’s supposed fee, maybe we are just happy to get his wages off the bill. If it’s 30000 a week that’s over 1.5m off the wage bill which is becoming more relevant to financial sustainability in the next few years.

Comment #24Re Darlow…I do think someone reported yesterday…maybe it was Craig Hope, that the Darlow deal was not going to me in the millions. So that means less than 2 or even perhaps 1 million. Be a shame to let him go too cheap but really need to get some out and off the wage books as well. Hopefully it works out and he gets games there.

Comment #32ESPO; I cannot agree with your assessment of Miley. He was more than okay. I don’t like to go overboard but he was superb.
On another note, Sterling was a disgrace. He took a dive to try and win a freekick / penalty, which was embarrassing and he went around putting in some very poor, petulant, challenges in. He was pathetic.

Comment #34I thought Miley was very good. For a young lad he showed no fear and plenty of confidence.
Would have no problems of EH keeping him in the squad and using him (rather than being sent out on loan).
See earlier that I had again attracted a couple of stalkers again, several times now the same couple of punters have been stalking me.
Clearly dodgy -very dodgy probably just leftoid loons and nothing more sinister than that ie nonces/perves.

Comment #37That lad Jackson who scored against us in another “on pitch summersalter”.
Whilst fast and a decent player you can see he’s the type that will be rolling all over the pitch when tackled, feigning injury.
And Cucarella’s hair – my God -he needs a “short back and sides” haircut.
Close ups this morning showed he had permed locks what a tart.
Although I suspect a few on here have similar barnets or get the old hair rollers on their mops.

Comment #40We’ve had loads of false dawns with young players. Hoping Miley is the next big thing but we’ll have to give him time to develop. Matty Longstaff looked great in the League from a few matches but obviously didn’t live up to that potential.
Good to see another viable option in midfield for us though. Another reason I really don’t think we’ll be signing anyone else in that position this summer.
