I think our overall performance in America has been good.
    Got our fitness levels up.
The team’s had a chance to bond over some baseball.
The youngsters have had the experience to train with the experienced players and senior coaching staff.
We performed well on the pitch but haven’t given too much away in terms of our opening weekend starting 11 or tactics.
We’ve had a practice against some of the teams against which we’ll be competing for places.

All in all I’d call that a pretty successful trip.

Now let’s go and win that Sela cup..!

I think I’m going to blame Dummet for their goal.

If you look, he goes to kick the ball and misses.

If he was any kind of player, when he goes to kick the ball there, he connects.

I don’t buy this “if pope hadn’t have touched it” crap. If Dummet can’t shift his body to deal with that in the millisecond prior to missing his kick then I think he should hangs his boots in shame. Further to that he didn’t even block Welbeck’s shot, he just watched him tap the ball into the net. I think he should take up a sport more suited to his speed of mind: tiddliewinks.

Sorry Paul, but it’s in your contract extension terms, everything that goes wrong from now on it’s your fault.

    Every player has their uses.

Craig Hope reporting Schar has a hamstring injury.

Even if it’s just a tweak with only two weeks to the Villa game he could be a doubt. The last thing we want is to take a risk and end up with 6-8 weeks out.

Just shows how short we are CB and that has to be a priority signing before the window closes.

We do seem light in the rcb position. I do like Lascelles, another modern toon legend, but we do miss Shär’s passing range when he is not on the pitch. Alex Murphy has looked good but is another left footer and I don’t think we’ve seen enough of Savage to judge.

I still probably think that Lascelles is one of our fastest (possibly the actual fastest) centrebacks. He is solid enough as second choice.

    Bill’s,
Not that the extra revenue means anything but if they want to put bums on seats for these friendlies then they need to bring in an extra few bodies. I don’t care if anyone says I’m whinging, I won’t be able to make either of them anyway but I think they have priced out a full stadium rather than making them cheaper and getting a full house. It has traditionally been for people who can’t afford to get to PL games so a grandad might take his four bairns to the game, it’s inconsequential that there’s three games in a day, nobody really wants to see that many games of football, it’s not like it’s Barcelona and Real Madrid playing in the other one either.

    On pre-season games…

Apart from fitness levels a sharp coach like Eddie also has the chance to see how the younger players perform when they aren’t surrounded by nailed on first teamers.

It’s difficult for a young ;lad to demand or see much of the ball, especially in a mid position, if you have Bruno, Jo, Tonali, Willock or Longstaff in there. In a team with squad players and other young lads you get a far better indication of how they can perform and influence play against quality opposition. If they make a mistake or don’t perform, and we lose, far better it be in a friendly than in the Prem.

Eddie also gets the chance to try out different formations, some players for example will play well in a back 3 but not a 4, or in a mid 3 but not a 4, and vice versa.

Fans like 9 last night don’t seem to get that. Of course Eddie wants to win every game, but there is a huge risk experimenting big changes in the Prem compared to a friendly.

Eddie having a bench full of young lads is a classic example of using pre-season in the right way. He knows what the senior players can do, and his high tempo training gives them enough fitness without playing every match + he reduces the chance of injuries. Giving the young lads a game against top oppo also tells him more about their ability under pressure than he’ll ever find out in training sessions.

I think we’ve had a brilliant pre-season so far, plenty of experiments and no defeats. And, we’ve learnt that Anderson is first team ready and that Miley, Murphy and the other young lads have obviously benefitted hugely from high quality coaching.

Another CB and possibly LB and we’ll be flying for the new season.

That is undeserved criticism of Dummett for Brighton’s goal, Vask. Regardless of our feelings about his suitability for the new Newcastle he could not have adjusted his feet after Pope’s touch.
Good to see Anderson growing in stature and Miley continues to impress.
A good pre-season tour on and off the pitch.

I just hope we can buy a right footed centre back this window.

Apart from the champions league homegrown reason, I think that is why we have extended dummet for another year. His experience of academy to first team to senior member of the first team is incredibly useful to help the youngins. I know we have Anderson but he is just breaking through and I feel Longstaff has just come of age really, so Paul’s place in the squad at his point in his career cannot be dismissed as worthless.

As I said, everyplayer has their uses.

For the record, I don’t know the details of the Castore partnership but I can certainly see that’s one of the legacy Ashley deals that would be good for the fans if it was gone. Frankly, any Ashley arranged commercial deal that has a problem with it will be blamed on Ashley and have fans complaining. I don’t give a stuff about Castore so will be happier when that deal is done.

It’s pretty much the last visible trace of Mike Ashley’s commercial enterprises at the club. I think that symbolism contributes to the Ill feeling surrounding the brand. That, and reported pittance that it is compared to club against whom we wish to be competing commercially.

Vask – from a business perspective, I just think that’s credit to Castore for getting involved with a brand that has since exploded and now has a seat at the top table. From many fans’ perspectives, I agree with you. From a personal perspective, I care more about what happens on the pitch.

I also trust that our owners are savvy business people so will be doing what they can to get rid of contracts that are past their sell by dates.

I also understand that fans are starved of football over summer but pre-season games are glorified training matches. Howe made it clear that he was going to play 2 different teams for the last 2 matches and I never expected that to be an A team and a B team, did anyone else? I assumed they would be mixed up and competitive, which they were.

I don’t care about results in pre-season really. Not even that bothered about individual performances really. Just good to see the lads get fit and ready for the season.

    Indeed TDs.

Castore has done well disrupting the establish footy shirt brands. At least two other premier league teams have their shirts. (Villa and Wolves). It seemed to come from nowhere too. I also quite like their logo.

I know people have beef with puma too but I’d say they’re my favourite big sports brand. They were slightly more ethical than the others in the 2003 edition of the good shopping guide. 🙂

Vask – I look at things differently when it comes to the business side of NUFC and the football side of NUFC. I work on the business side of things but the size and complexity of the commercial deals they have are considerably bigger than those I deal with, so I’ve only a limited grasp on those. I do get the gist of things though and feel the people in charge are doing an excellent job.

The football side of things is much more interesting though. Much more exciting too!

Well a bit of pessimism (level headedness) after that game. Felt like an actual friendly as opposed to the game in Atlanta. Pretty poor turn out and atmosphere. Let’s be honest, we lacked any creativity and the wing play was pretty non existent. Ashby was pretty sound defensively but didn’t see a lot of the ball so we really missed the way we play with Tripps. Targett was our best player first half but downed tools second half. Actually got done by his man more than once and casually chased back as if he was Maxi in disguise. I hope Ashworth and co. are breaking there necks to get us a centre half and LB with genuine pace before the window shuts

We have played 3 really strong PL teams without ever having our best 11 on the pitch & avoided defeat! Job done imo!
