An almost second Newcastle 11 side managed to come away with a 2-1 win in the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey against Brighton last night, with both goals coming from the so impressive 20 year-old Elliot Anderson, who was born in Whitley Bay: he looks to be a star of the future.
This lad can score goals and surely on the evidence of this American tour, he must be pushing to start games this season?
Comparisons have been made with Paul Gascoigne, which of course are complimentary, but this tour has shown we have youngsters coming through who will only get better this season under the guidance of our star coach Eddie Howe.
Anthony Gordon, Elliot Anderson, and 17 year-old Jamie Miley will be pushing hard this coming season and it shows just how good Eddie Howe is at coaching young footballers.
Here are the highlights from NBC Sports.
Newcastle didn’t play well in the first half and another sloppy goal conceded, but it’s never say die for this Newcastle side.
And they continue to be praised by football pundits for the way they play the game – going forward and attacking all the time.
Love it!
Next up for Newcastle are two friendly games in quick succession starting next Saturday as part of the inaugural ‘Sela Cup, presented by VisitMalta’.
Italian club Fiorentina, French club Nice, and Spanish club Villarreal are the other clubs particiating in the mini-tournament.
It’s been a good preseason for Newcatsle, but we still need a couple of first-team players brought in so we are well equipped to play in four competitions this year, the Premier League, the two local cups, and the Champions League.
It should be another exciting and positive season for Newcastle fans.
🙂

Comment #2Wor Dr Ed has hit the nail on the head about young Elliot Anderson “A young star of the future “ and a bright star he will be. The biggest thing to come out of our academy since our very own Gazza…

Comment #5Whilst I wish Maxi all the best going forward, there’s nee way he penned that farewell.
Whoever thinks he did, needs to give their heeds a shake.
He employs a PR firm to handle all his socials,so on a momentous occasion such as leaving the Toon he says “tek the morning off guy’s,I’ve got this!”

Comment #6Jail we know that you like to paint a false picture of my opinions but I’m afraid you’re living in your land of make believe too.
But just to make certain, I think that Miley is rather good ok ?
I presume now that you will say that Munster has said that Miley is average 🙂
What a ticket you are lad 🙂

Comment #7Agree with everything you say about Anderson but I do think the bigger star eventually will be 17 year old Lewis Miley (not Jamie Ed). One piece of play last night from him was truly astonishing for one so young. He is cool, calm, neat, elegant, tidy, a lovely crisp accurate passer with vision and mobility and a player with so much self belief and confidence in his ability.
I saw young Gazza make his first team debut at St. James and I firmly believe this lad has it in him to be just as big a star on the football stage except I think he is more grounded and sensible in his demeanour.
With regards to transfers I do think we should forget about midfield acquisitions as a choice from Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton, Willock, Longstaff, Elliott and (when needed) Miley should easily suffice the rigours of next season.
A top left back. central defender and right back would set us up for the matches ahead and then in the next winter window or the following summer one really push the boat out for Kvaratskhelia if he still hasn’t left Napoli.
In the meanwhile keep signing the young stars of tomorrow as the current young one are now showing the benefits of better coaching than our last useless regime.

Comment #8Fenners he deffo looks like gazza level doesn’t he?
It might take a while for Tonali to shine though, which is exactly what I said previously.
Tough league, and midfield is the worst of it. Pure war zone.

Comment #11Forgot to say Ed (sorry a little late) but very best and sincere good wishes to you and your family and your challenging health situation. As with our redoubtable team ‘keep on keeping on’ as you, your blog and your observations are, and have always been, gratefully appreciated by us Toon fanatics. Long may you, and it, last. You’re an inspiration Sir.

Comment #12Raj – I think a few things will have cooled our interest in Maddison. The signing of Tonali, the improvement of Anderson, the option of Gordon playing more centrally, maybe even knowing that Miley will be part of the squad next season. I think we have lots of options in that area now so the existing squad will get some time to make those positions their own.
That’s especially true considering the age of most of those players. Most of them have their best football ahead of them.
In defence, it’s a different story. They’ll definitely make signings to ensure we have a continuity plan for LB, RB, and RCB.

Comment #13Lewis Miley will be class no doubt about it but Jamie is also a great prospect and has time to make the grade
There’s also 2 more brothers 1 on the toon books who is well thought of and 1 sadly on Sunluns books who has no chance

Comment #14It was a treat to watch them last night in person for the first time even if it was the B squad. I thought there were several really good tackles in the first half. My Almiron shirt was supposed to ship in 2- 5 days business days. that was 10 business days ago. Oh well. I take it as a good sign.
And you would have to say the preseason is going well. They’ve ticked a lot of boxes. Growing the brand (particularly in Atlanta) Tick. Trying new formations. Tick. Exposure for the up and coming payers. Tick. No bad results. Tick

Comment #19Morning all…back at the airport after a great night out with NYMag. It was a pleasure and great to see the lads with you and meet some of your family. Scythe and IITianToon….sorry it didn’t work out to meet up but good to know we had a small contingent representing Ed and the rest of us there. The crowd was maybe close to 50/50 or slightly to our favour but yes the Geordie and supporter contingent made thier presence known. You could hear Toon….Army, na na na na na na na Geordies etc being sung through the evening. Might not have felt like a home crowd for a lot of the evening but when that second goal went in…and NYMag and I were right behind the goal, I think I got a glimpse. Maybe even brought a tear to mee wee eye. 😉 Anderson was a beast and until hearing Eddie about his fitness wasn’t sure that eas really him going that strong at the end. And to see the young lads that came in play for Eddie and the badge in our style was impressive. They were tenacious and played with determination to win that game. Well done and we’ll worth the trip. HWTL!!!

Comment #23Giving our past history with youngsters from our academy and the high failure rate I did have some doubts about Elliot but they have been well and truly swept away, if Rice is a £100m footballer then what is Elliot going to be worth!

Comment #24Come on now Munsterlini, there’s some kind of fault in every player, you harp on about that fault until you’re proven wrong, I’m really not sure how you can’t see that, unless you count fishing as not being genuine opinions and therefore you don’t mean them.

I Said Tonali might take time to adjust. Evidence suggests I’m right.
And Barnes will be an upgrade on Maxi.
So….I think you are a little off beam 🙂

Comment #26Only a month to go and the window is closed.
We cannot spend what we have in our pockets due to ffp. That’s why we sold maxi.
But two in and one out is nowhere near enough. Plus 1 player to take on CL is not enough.
I would settle for a fast LB and CD

Comment #27A very heart felt statement by Maxi. Won’t have written it himself personally but I’d say he means every word in it. I am sad to see him go.
Hopefully things are progressing well with Bruno and his contract talks behind the scenes. Although we have a wage limit, I feel the last thing we want is for talks to go on and on and on with no positive outcome for player, club and fans. If Bruno becomes unhappy, it will more than likely turn sour.

Our defence is no longer good enough.
Still got the best Toon keeper ever but the back 4 lacks pace. Great when sat deep but pushed up it cannot deal with fast forwards like Watkins and Nunes.
A couple of fast defenders is a must

Comment #33FFP was always going to be an issue, as I said last summer. Nobody seems to know what sanctions apply if we break the rules, but this is going to be a steady build.
The flip side of that is that we have bought nearly a new team since the owners came in, so it’s a helluva transformation.

Comment #37Why are people saying that Maxi didn’t pen that farewell message, he is said to be a very intelligent person and it had a feeling of genuine regret at leaving.
OK he might have written it in French and that was a translation but it looked like a real heartfelt personal message to me.
I don’t think it would have taken much effort to persuade him not to go.

Comment #38Not sure there are many defenders about with the sort of acceleration and pace required to catch the attacking whippets about nowadays, when you play the high line. If these defenders were that quick, would they not be attackers themselves? 😆
Positioning and reading of the game in real-time goes some way to mitigate this when deployed as a high line. And also how well the ‘6’ is playing and breaking up plays.
I think if our midfield in general performs on the day then it has to be excellent moves and goals to beat us.
