An almost second Newcastle 11 side managed to come away with a 2-1 win in the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey against Brighton last night, with both goals coming from the so impressive 20 year-old Elliot Anderson, who was born in Whitley Bay: he looks to be a star of the future.
This lad can score goals and surely on the evidence of this American tour, he must be pushing to start games this season?
Comparisons have been made with Paul Gascoigne, which of course are complimentary, but this tour has shown we have youngsters coming through who will only get better this season under the guidance of our star coach Eddie Howe.
Anthony Gordon, Elliot Anderson, and 17 year-old Jamie Miley will be pushing hard this coming season and it shows just how good Eddie Howe is at coaching young footballers.
Here are the highlights from NBC Sports.
Newcastle didn’t play well in the first half and another sloppy goal conceded, but it’s never say die for this Newcastle side.
And they continue to be praised by football pundits for the way they play the game – going forward and attacking all the time.
Love it!
Next up for Newcastle are two friendly games in quick succession starting next Saturday as part of the inaugural ‘Sela Cup, presented by VisitMalta’.
Italian club Fiorentina, French club Nice, and Spanish club Villarreal are the other clubs particiating in the mini-tournament.
It’s been a good preseason for Newcatsle, but we still need a couple of first-team players brought in so we are well equipped to play in four competitions this year, the Premier League, the two local cups, and the Champions League.
It should be another exciting and positive season for Newcastle fans.
🙂

Comment #82I agree with a defenders pace being a bonus thingy.
Just seems far too simplistic, especially with the way Eddie sets up.
Going forward we just need a younger Schar and Tripps. Targett did well in the settled back 4 before he went tits up, hope he can rediscover that, but competition there would be nice.
Chances of winging it again with more or less the same backline is a big ask.
We may need to though with the prices clubs are wanting. They could buckle and drop their prices as the window gets shorter maybe, especially Soton who must need the cash.

It’s only Munster who thinks we’re slow in defence and Botman turns like a bus
But Munster thinks all our players are slow

Comment #85We do need a new RCB,Schar is not going to last forever and without Botman beside him is a little suspect(but that goes for whole left side of defence as well),he is the glue!

I agree we need a RCB, I think if we only sign 1 more player it should be a CB

Some odd views people have on football, hey?
😉
But, a lot of it can be put down to scapegoating… there’s always a player that ‘just ain’t good enough at this level’…
Some will never understand the team effort.

Comment #90Pace is definitely a must in a modern full back, for getting forward…
Pace has never been a requisite in a centre half,in my opinion of course…
Oh and Maxi is a god,cos he gave a couple of watches away.
Seems like insecurity to me…

Comment #91I tend to think Livramento or similar is important for next season for Tripps in case he goes tits for a period of time. Don’t think Eddie has played Ashby enough to show us that he trusts him yet. Don’t know how Krafth will come back. Manqy may be away if reports are true.
Saying that, don’t know how Livramento is after his injury!
Aah bollox, me heed hurts 😆

Yeah I think Livramento would be a fantastic signing and I really hope we sign him
He can play a number of positions

Comment #93Anderson and Miley might save us £100M in transfers!
Those 2 lads have it all, why didn’t Anderson go on loan?
Eddie knows best!
Miley is not going on loan, why?
Eddie knows best!
Trust in Eddie!
Don’t forget Miley has just turned 17,if he can improve as much as Anderson in 1 season with the lads training, oh my word.
That is why I don’t like our really young talented players going on loan to shite clubs.
Keep them here, train them in our way and learn the Geordie way.

Comment #94Miley isn’t going on loan because they want him at home with his family and training with us, he’ll play in the cups and get some game time in games we’re winning comfortably I would have thought.

Comment #100I’m not sure we’ll see Willock starting until a few weeks into the season. Sounds like quite a serious injury, we’ll want him back fully fit and raring to go.
It looks as if Anderson is cover for that leftcentremid. Probly see Joelinton starting there to begin with though. Tonali in the Longstaff position. Bruno where Bruno plays.

Comment #101Evening all. Well I’ve watched the full game and read all of the matchday comments and was entertained by all. For me this preseason has been great. Eddie has made full use of it and no doubt learned a lot. It’s been great watching the youngsters slot seamlessly in, we have a bright future.
On moving players on, Darlow has shown that PL wages are a real issue and that will continue to be the case. There just isn’t the money available in the Championship.

Comment #102On a personal note I’m upset Darlow is leaving

He lived at the back but always had the time of day to communicate with us and often acknowledged us in the club
We’ve still got Shola as a regular tho

Comment #104The forward line is mad versatile, aside from Miggy and Wilson who are pretty fixed in terms of their positions. Isak, Murphy, Gordon, Barnes, Anderson and Joelinton can all play different positions across midfield and forward positions. There are a lot of permeations to work with there. Keep the oppos guessing.

Comment #105Some folks are bizarre on this blog…
Slagging off our defence??? Are you nuts? I’m convinced that we need reinforcements to add depth but our defence was amazing last season. Weird assessment.
Insinuating ASM didn’t write his leaving statement? The guy has always been amazing with his communication with the fans. Great with the fans, an exciting player on the pitch, just not enough end product to keep his place in this squad.
And conversely, Pope is the best keeper we’ve ever had? I mean, maybe he’ll be elevated to that level one day but I’m definitely putting Shay Given ahead of him at this point. Probably some other people might put other keepers ahead too.

Did I tell you about my 450 yard drive that bounced off the clubhouse, hit an old boy on his head and went in the hole for a hole in one on a par 5 dog leg?
Better?

Comment #111Vask – until recently my most hated hole at my local course is a par 5 that isn’t even a dog leg but is like a zig zag and up a hill. There are stories of people carrying the trees up the hill from the tee and others hitting a fade that goes right up the hill but I’ve never seen it done.
Birdied it for the first time a few weeks ago and I must have played that hole 150 times.

Comment #114Coming Home – see, I know you know that I’m not BSing. You know as well as I do that if someone can regularly drive 260-270, then it doesn’t take too much to go over 300 with a bit of wind or a slope. Add a steep slope and dry ground into the mix and you know as well as I do that it can be done.
So just admit it and give me credit for a long drive! 😉 it might end up being my longest ever and I miss out on 350 by a single yard!

Comment #116Coming Home – will make you laugh though. Played with a mate recently and I took the piss a little saying he had puny drives. Haven’t played together much recently as his wife has had a baby and he’s only been able to play very early during the week. I couldn’t remember how far he hit it but he got all prickly about it.
Can you imagine what was said when he was chuffed with a good drive and then I hit my 5 iron 10 yards further? 🙂
