Newcastle United 2-0 Fiorentina: Eddie Howe faces major selection headache for Premier League opener.

” Newcastle United looked impressive against Serie A side as Eddie Howe weighs up selection headache.

Eddie Howe has barely got over his jetlag after Newcastle United’s tour of the United States – but he is now facing a few more sleepless nights in terms of his team sheet against Aston Villa.

In fairness, Howe, who watched his team see off Fiorentina with relative ease in the Sela Cup, will welcome the selection dilemma he has ahead of him before next weekend’s curtain raiser against Unai Emery’s men.

However, he knows that he could upset two or three of his first-team stars ahead of next Saturday night’s eagerly anticipated encounter. ”

    Jail

    My starting 11 would be…

    Pope
Tripps, Schar if fit or Lascelles, Botman Burn
    Anderson Bruno Jo
    Miggy Isak Gordon

So, with Willock and Longstaff not 100% fit it’s Tonali who misses out.

There is going to be one hell of a battle for first choice mid three positions and I think Tonali will have to force his way in through sub minutes or injuries.

I also thought that Miggy’s first choice status might be under threat when we signed Barnes as I can see Eddie staying with inverted wingers but playing Gordon on the right and Barnes on the left as the season progresses. However, Miggy has hit goalscoring form again and that RW place is his if he keeps doing that.

I also think Livramento might be able to back up Schar, although not from the off, Lascelles will deputise in the early games if Schar isn’t fit.

    On Livramento…

He reminds me of Gareth Bale in his early days as a LB with Spurs. Really fast, skillful and brilliant running with the ball. Once Bale moved up to the wing he was a world beater. I’ve got a feeling the same could happen to Livramento.

I think Anderson won’t be starting because lack of experience, but if 1st teamer miss chances like Gordon, sooner or later he will start. But then, I’m not Howe. So who knows, he might start Anderson instead of Gordon, Tonali or Bruno?

    Bill’s,
You think EA starts ahead of Tonali, interesting, he had no qualms about starting him in a crucial game against Lpool last year and he’s come on leaps since then. I think Wilson starts against Villa mind going on Eddie H’s preference to start Wilson against teams he’s done well against, he absolutely annihilated Villa last year and should have had a hatrick, if not two.

    Tonali – CLASS
What a work rate covered every inch of SJP today
Be interesting how Howe will accommodate both him and Bruno as he played the Bruno role – maybe not with the silky skills but better engine picks the space and drops into the space always wants the ball
Also Miles and Anderson were outstanding along with Gordon
    Miggy his audial self
Howe got a job on his hands picking his starting midfield

Eddie if you are reading. Good game today giving everybody a run out.
Glad you are having none of that tosh in playing Gordon as a centre forward. There were a few on here suggesting that you play him there because of those daft ideas from Lee Carlsley.

You obviously agree – winger or inside forward.
    Yours faithfully,
    Mister Tuff.

    Bills,
I would agree with that except for Livramento as possible cover for Schar, CB does not suit his skill-set IMO. He is more likely to play RW or LB than CB.

I also maintain that we might see more or Alex Murphy this season either as CB or LB in some cup games.

Anderson is 1st team ready now that is for sure. If Miley and Murphy can follow him that is going to save us a fortune in the coming years, and they would all count as club-trained for European competitions when they eventually turn 21 (which is 24/25 season for Anderson)

I do wonder if some people on here need to take some reading or comprehension lessons…

At no point whatsoever did I say that Liverpool was a better place to live than Newcastle. In my personal opinion it’s a no brainer, I’d far rather live in Newcastle than Liverpool and that’s even without the football bias.

My actually really real world opinion was regarding the history of Liverpool FC, the number of top players living in the NW, and the fact that there’s both Liverpool and Manchester not too far apart means that NW clubs do have some attractions to certain sorts of players.

Hard choice. Experience vs performance. I just feel Tonali might edge out a bit. For me, it’s Bruno.G that get dropped, if it’s going by performance of friendlies. By experience, it’s Anderson that gets dropped but he sure is knocking on the door and he can play a lot positions.

The headache I would have if I were Howe is: Can you really start Longstaff over Tonali, Joelinton or Bruno?

In the 5 matches Sean didnt start , newcastle dropped points in 4.

But…you know…he’s Longstaff. Can you imagine being Tonali and watching Longstaff play as a starter over you? just who is this lanky bastard who seems to just run around with his poorly considered mustache?

“Anthony Gordon got his first taste of life as a Newcastle United centre-forward on Wednesday evening as he played through the middle of Eddie Howe’s attack in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea. The two Premier League sides battled it out in Atlanta, with Gordon continuing the fine form he showed with England at the recent under-21 European Championships”
    Eddie Howe on forward reinforcements.
“It’s not something we’re looking at, we have Callum and Alex and Anthony has shown he can play through the middle”
I’m not sure if that’s worth putting in your pipe and smoking on it Mister Tough.

Another fun fact about the Toon is it was a county before it was a city. Henry IV granted county status in 1400. City status followed in 1882. City and County of Newcastle upon Tyne.

It has a certain cachet to it.

Even in preseason, we don’t lose games. The winning mentality is truly impressive.

Good to see TDS is back to reiterate his views on the merits of Newcastle vs. every other city in the world. It’s been an enjoyable discussion. Not pounded into the ground at all.

AG was great, just needs to get ruthless in the shot. Miggy, nice.

All the bairns were excellent, against a proper, well drilled, take no prisoners, top Italian team.

Personally I see Longstaff and Tonali battling it out for that RCM spot. The LCM: Willock Anderson Joelinton. Also Bruno Tonali Miley for DCM. Most of our centre mids are fairly dynamic except maybe Longstaff and Willock. Anderson I’d say is better the further forward he plays.
