Newcastle played well this afternoon and beat a very decent Fiorentina side 2-0 in the Sela Cup and we have the video highlights of what turned out to be a good performance from the lads.
It was good to get a clean sheet with Martin Dubravka in goal for the whole game.
Here is the team Newcastle started today:
Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka; Kieran Trippier, Alex Murphy, Sven Botman, Matt Targett; Lewis Miley, Sandro Tonali, Elliot Anderson; Miguel Almirón, Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon.
Substitutes: Mark Gillespie, Jude Smith, Remi Savage, Charlie McArthur, Jordan Hackett, Nathan Carlyon, Jamie Miley, Lucas De Bolle, James Huntley, Jay Turner-Cooke, Ben Parkinson, Amadou Diallo, Michael Ndiweni.
Newcastle had some chances in the first half and finally went ahead with a goal in the 38th minute.
That man Miguel Almiron scored again, after some great work from Alexander Isak, who looks like he will start up front against Aston Villa next weekend, at the expense of Callum Wilson.
On another day we could have had more goals but we finally went further ahead late in the game, after 82 minutes, when Isak headed home strongly to give Newcastle a very good 2-0 win.
One good thing about today’s game is that both Lewis Miley and Elliot Anderson had good games in central midfiled, and that’s a massive bonus for Eddie Howe.
The central three – with Italaian Internationa Sandro Tonali, played very well in the engine room.
And I would be surprised if Newcastle bring in another central midiflder this summer, we hardly need one.
We do need a pacey right footed center-back, however.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano is reporting today Newcastle are now interested in signing center back Joachim Anderson from Crystal POalace, after we sign Tino Lavramento, who is now in Newcastle – hopefully signing along the bottom line soon.
Lavramento was in the Director’s box today watchuing the game.
Cetsral Palace’s center-back Anderson very rarely gives the ball away and the reliable 27-year-old Danish International, who stands 6ft 4ins tall, can play either left or right central defense.
A game against Villareal tomorrow is next on the agenda, so it’s all go this weekend for Eddie Howe’s PL squad.
The Premier League season finally kicks off next weekend and we play at home to a strong looking Aston Villa side: it will be a tough opener for us.
Here are the highlights of today’s game.

Comment #3Pleased the weather stayed dry and didn’t rain during the match.
Anderson definitely a big plus today, as was alex Murphy. AG with a bit more composure would have bagged a few, but I’d say he did well and his fitness is improving.
The thing with pre season friendlies is the fitness of the players and getting them in tune with what EH is asking if them on the pitch. Things like results are really not important at all. Nice if we win but EH won’t lose sleep if we’d have lost.
Fair play to the dozen or so Fiorentina fans who turned up and supported their team.

From previous.
Over the summer I touched on how important Dummet’s role is in regards to mentoring and setting an example for the academy kids trying to break through.
How to be a model professional: See Dummet.

Comment #9Sorry about the repost but I didn’t notice the bus had moved:-
So I’m guessing the starting lineup tomorrow will be something like
Pope
Burn
Schar (if fit)
Lascelles
Manquillo
Joelinton
Bruno
Longstaff (if fit)
Murphy J
Wilson
Barnes
Not a bad starting eleven!!
Possibly Dummett replacing Schar and Richie replacing Longstaff respectively if either of them are not fit.

Comment #20Tough 11 to pick v Villa. Anderson will be a big player for us this term, and for years to come, but I’m not sure he gets a start in midfield if Tonali, Bruno and Joel are fit, and on the left flank ahead of Barnes, Gordon or Isak.
We have such a great squad now, but I really do like the look of this 11….
…………………..Pope.
Trippier….Schar……Botman….Targett.
…………………..Tonali.
…………Bruno……………Joel.
Almiron……..Wilson/Isak………Barnes
…..with an amazing bench, particularly if we bring in Jaochim Anderson, and a starting left back. Mouthwatering, particularly at home.

Comment #25We need to dominate midfield against Villa
Can’t be letting them bar stewards ruin our start to the season
I notice FPL experts have us down as tough opposition but no picks
So many villain picks though

I don’t listen to FPL experts, I suspect they are not selecting NUFC players as we have a difficult first few games. Screw that, there will be 3 NUFC players in my team each week. I just need to try to figure out which 3!!
I remember saying as soon as the fixtures were announced that I like them. If we get off to a slow start it is understandable given the opponents, if we come out of the traps flying every other team will be sh*tting themselves. There is no downside really.

Comment #35Clint, I like Targett over Burn at left back for balance, but it could be either. Of the two players I prefer Burn, but I see both as excellent cover ideally. Burn at left sided centre back, Targett at left back. I’m still hoping we sign a starting left back, although Trippier, Livramento, Burn and Targett, is a pretty darn good collection of footballers actually. Still I think we are weaker on the left.

Comment #37Nicky – good views but think that the risk is being taken at LB
Leave it for now and address in Jan if needs be
The mitigation will be in who EH thinks can cover thet area
I hope Tripps don’t switch but who knows

Comment #38Alex Murphy can perhaps solve all these problems. Sure I base this on limited evidence and he is only 19 but he was signed for a reason and has performed whenever asked to play.
Mark my words.
He is hanging out with first team now and he will get opportunities this season.

Comment #39If Schar is indeed fit, it would seem strange to start two right-footed CBs (Schar + Lascelles) tomorrow after starting two left-footed CBs today.
We might see a surpise with Hackett from the U21s at LB or something similar.
