Eddie Howe seems to have the lads in top form ready for the Premier League opener next Saturday against Aston Villa at home.
In the game today Newcastle beat a good Villareal side 4-0 and the last two performances in two days, two clean sheets, and a cumulative 6-0 scoreline gives us real hope for Newcastle’s upcoming season.
🙂
It was all change from yesterday’s side with Eddie naming the following starting eleven.
Pope, Murphy, Lascelles (Savage 88), Dummett, Burn, Ritchie, Bruno, Longstaff, Joelinton, Barnes (Parkinson 83), Wilson (Diallo 88)
Subs:Â Gillespie, De Bolle, Carlyon, J Miley, Turner-Cooke, Hackett, Ndiweni, Huntley, McArthur
Notice that Jacob Murphy started at right back and he scored a great goal early in the first half (6 mins).
A brace from Barnes were both right-footed shots as he came in from the left wing – trademark Barnes’ goals.
And a cracking goal from former striker Joelinton, as he gathered the ball on the halfway line, took us through to a fairly comfortable victory and we win the inaugural Sela Cup with 2 wins in 2 games.
Murphy had an excellent game at right-back – there’s an eye-opener on Murphy, who seems to get better and better under Eddie Howe – maybe he can become an attacking right-back?
The boys seem to be coming into form at just the right time – thanks to Eddie Howe and his coaching staff’s detailed preseason plans.
And with Harvey Barnes having to fight for that left-wing position, he put in an excellent performance this afternoon.
The left winger was applauded off the field after 83 minutes, and it was an excellent first game for the former Leicester winger at St. James Park.
The 25-year-old has every chance of becoming a big player for us under Eddie Howe.
🙂
And here is the earlier video version I had out with Spanish commentary – if you also want to take a look at this one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BbwERZ_x9I&end=497
So after our final game of preseason, we now have a week of full training by the very impressive Eddie Howe and his staff.
And we’re sure the boys will be ready for a tough game against the rejuvenated Aston Villa, under new top Spanish coach Unai Emery.
Emery only took over Villa from Steven Gerrard last October, after Villa paid a buyout fee of a reported €6M (£5.2M) to Villarreal.
Emery took over when Villa had only 2 wins and 3 draws (9 points) from their first 11 games.
In the final 27 games under Emery Villa managed to get 16 wins and 4 draws 52 points to end up with 61 points and 8th place – a terrific turnaround from Villa last season and they have strengthened their squad this summer.
It should be a good week’s training for the Newcastle squad, and it will be interesting to see if 31-year-old Fabian Schar can return to training: the Swiss International (76 caps, 8 goals) is currently a big doubt for our first games of the season.
The game kicks off at 5:30pm, it’s the late game next Saturday afternoon and it will be a sellout at the refurbished St. James’ Park.

Lascelles was so disappointing today both on and off the ball, he could easily be on the bench if Schar doesn’t regain his fitness in time,
i like Lascelles and he’s been a great leader and a great captain but things are changing now and we now need better, he really was poor today

Barnes outstanding much more direct than ASM going to be a handful
Eddie has a heck of a job picking his first eleven

Are you suggesting the ref wanted Sunderland to get a result? I find that hard to believe, chances are he wanted to get out of there ASAP but has to play by the new rules.

Comment #19With so many players stepping up to the plate even Eddie might not have decided his starting 11 for the Villa game, but it would not surprise me if he tweaked the system a little and played an extra man in midfield next week to nullify their obvious strength in that department, they pretty much dominated and bullied us at Villa Park last year, although Sean Longstaff missing that day i think was a huge factor!!! This will be a very difficult opening game for the Toon, the midfield battle will be very interesting to say the least, and i suspect will determine who comes out on top next week HWTL.

Comment #21It’s all shaping up nicely.
This squad would have been contenders last season.
Still not enough there for that with all the cup games.
2026/27 is the season for that. Written in the stars. Welcome back Hughie.!!
A right centre back is needed and being greedy, a left back. A good loanee will do

Comment #28Overall I think that was a very pleasing pre-season. Undefeated throughout against some good sides and without playing close to our best eleven (whoever they are!!) Some great goals, re-engaged with our fans and potential fans in the States and no significant injuries were picked up either.
Can’t really ask for more than that.
For me the highlight has to be the youngsters though. Andersons progress is astonishing. Miley and A. Murphy look like they can make a genuine contribution this season if called upon to do so too. Also, I think it was great for so many of the other young lads to feel part of the team.
Under the old regime we would be playing away at Carlisle and Ashley wouldn’t pay for an extra bus for a few kids to go with main team. We’d probably bloody lose too.
How times have changed.

Comment #35Lascelles certainly had his Titus moment today but one mistake does not make him a bad player, could be costly in the EPL though.
If Villareal had taken any of their good chances it could have been a different game but overall our defense was solid enough and we well deserved the win.
Is their a league table for this tournament, I believe we ended on twelve points.?

Comment #36Considering we’ve got Schar, Willock and Kraft to come into the fold, I’m quite happy with the squad.
Dummett has impressed more than Lascelles, infact Alex Murphy has looked better than both but if we can get one more a right sided CB to really push Schar would be great. Either of the Palace duo of Andersen or Guehi would do but will probably cost too much.
Manquillo seems to be next out of the door, did hear some rumours of Celtic looking at Fraser, I’ll pay for his cab if it gets him off the wage book.
Howe has good competition for most places now, Almiron being pushed closely by Murphy, Targett is maybe just ahead of Burn, central midfield has a lot of competition, Isak vs Wilson is a close call, Isak for me. Gordon’s u21 performances and pre season have really put him in contention too.
Anderson deserves to start vs Villa but Joelinton and Barnes might be preferred over him.
Know a fair few fans want Dubravka gone but keep him for this season, he can play in the cups and him and Karius offer good cover for Pope.
Overall a good transfer window so far and a good pre season, hopefully there’s one, maybe two more signings still to come.

Comment #40A thing I have given some thought to is how much this SELA cup could be worth?. Could it be another 5 million Euro in sponsorship for instance? I cant see how UEFA or the EPL could do anything about it if it was, since our we had to win it against some pretty good sides.
Just a thought, and the amount could be a mile of, but who knows.
