Here are the video highlights from NBC Sports of our 5-1 beating of Aston Villa this afternoon in our first league game of the season.
An (another) incredible performance from Eddie Howe’s side and we could be even better than last season, but of course, we have a lot more games to play this season with the Champions League – and we mustn’t get carried away.
Well, not too much, anyway.
š
But the result and performance in our first game of the season could hardly have been better.
We wonder what Sandro Tonali will be thinking tonight – he put in a world-class performance today, scored after 6 minutes, and it just how good our recruitment team is – led by Sporting Director Dan Ashworth.
Newcastle are in a good place right now – amnd it’s likelyto get better too – hope so.
Here are the highlights (you can put it on full screen by clicking at the bottom right corner after you hit the link) that will have the City Center of Newcastle buzzing all next week.
š
Here is Eddie Howe’s interview with NBC Sports after the game.

Comment #162Well what can I say about the match, absolutely incredible stuff and there’s going to be at least another fourteen teams worse than Villa rocking up here. We just got better and better, how do you now leave Barnes on the bench, we have a squad almost full of game changers now. I said a while ago albeit before Miggy became really good, can you imagine when we’re in a position where we’ve got players like Miggy on the bench and chomping at the bit to get on the pitch. Those subs were phenomenal yesterday.

I was explaining the pots to the bairn last night and I made that exact same point, some teams might rock up expecting a Rzngers or a Qarabag, what a shock they’re going to get at SJP.

Comment #164If AG is as good on the right as he was on the left yesterday then a front three of him, Isak and Barnes has to be our most favoured starting line up, so many options with so much versatility, Willock still to come back and fight for his place as well.

Comment #165There were some awesome performances out there yesterday, but the player that attracted my ire on more than one occasion last year but who put in a sterling performance yesterday was BDB…he looked a different player yesterday…faster, calmer, stronger, and in total control.
Well played sir …I dof my hat in your general direction!

Comment #166One negative I have to touch on mind. I wasn’t on the lash (one Brewdog at HT all day š )
And I was up in L7 so might have my judgement skewered a little bit, but for a 17:30 KO it didn’t seem that electric in there, I hope it’s not to do with people not really being able to buy their seats in blocks and those not suited to singing areas being placed there and vice versa.

I can see why he starts Miggy not as direct as Barnes but has not let Howe Down gives him 100%
Barnes will start in future I think as he is more direct and I can see why he started with Gordon and brought Barnes on in his place… Gordon for a hour tormented Villas right with his direct running then they thought phew he has subbed him to bring on someone who is as quick and direct.
See Gordons chase back first half from the edge of their box to get in a tackle when Watkins thought he was through.
We were excellent going forward Tonal – class apart, Bruno got better as game went on but gets caught in possession. Tonali makes it look easy (has his head up) passes first time and moves into space. Bruno seems to has his head looking down.
Still got to work on picking runners up from the through ball/ ball over the top as we were exploited a few times yesterday.
Also can see Wilson being played more as a impact sub.
All in all a great start to the season and a excellent squad to tackle the four competitions

Yes I’m one of the two who gave Burn MOM. He’s that good, one day everyone will have to admit it. Right after the hat trick š
Amazing that Barnes, a guy with an assist, a goal and a missed goal on the plate, gets… One vote!
Wilson, goal scorer and a hunter, 0.
No harm, just shows how comprehensive a team performance this was.
Can we do this every week?

Aye, and Miggy will probably start again, if we are to have a ‘best’ eleven then that was it yesterday only with Barnes ahead of Miggy.
Livramento not even in a best eleven. Frightening š

Comment #172We have so many options of forwards and a brilliant midfield. Also some top defenders. I honestly think this squad is the best weāve ever had since the Entertainers! But weāre better than them I think !
Iām waiting to hear what Carragher and Neville have to say now!

I think we do. Guimaraes, Joelinton and Toonali are all world class operators.

Comment #176Villa are a top 8 team with top 4 aspirations, some very talented players and a master tactician for a manager.
And we destroyed them.
At no stage during the game did it look to me like weād finish with less than 3 points, even after they equalised.
We had too much for them in every department, quick, slick and mobile on the attack. Resolute, solid and relentless in pressing without the ball.
Our subs produced as much threat as our starters, a luxury I canāt remember seeing at SJP in a generation.
We now have the tools to turn last yearās draws into wins. Itās early days and a lot can happen with injuries and form, but on this showing Iām happy with my 2nd place pick in martoonās predictions.
The stuff of dreams is becoming reality, take a bow Eddie and the grownups.

In all due respect I don’t really think many people really care about Mings or Villa players in general, not being horrible but it’s not like he was critical or anything. I don’t think that had a bearing on it.

Comment #180In the know Toastie picks the team.
Raj – thought crowd was mint. Just went quiet before half time after mings went off and everyone scattered for an early pint.
Does bewilder me folk who fcuk off ten minutes before half time to return five minutes into the 2nd half. Like there isnt enough time during the rest of the day to quaff lager. Mad.

Comment #181I think Miggy will hold his place but only if he gets assists and goals. Eddie loves his press. Him and Gordon hounded the shiit out of Villa. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a display of such energy by a Newcastle team. It had even more than the Brighton game. Even the wife watched the game and 2 sets of highlights!

Comment #183Clearly MickyG knows Toastie is gravy and copied his team.
Which was obvious.
Few highlights from yesterday.
Tonali pinging a 50 yard ball to Gordon first half with his left foot.
Tonali pinging a 70 yard ball to Barnes second half to Barnes with his right foot.
Bruno pinging a 60 yarder to Barnes.
Gordonās covering run to catch Diaby up. That was truly magnificent by the kid.
As a few of us mentioned Gordon was always going to be gravy this year.
What an amazing squad. Teams gunna dread coming to the toon this season. Will be going long and sitting in most teams.

what can I say 5-1, every player played fantastic but a very special mention out to gordon and tonali, absolute cracking displays
10/10 to all of the players except gordon and tonali, gordon 10.5 and tonali 11
I did say a while ago just watch out for tonali, defence minded, a mean streak and a very good pacer of the ball
the goalie should have seen red, what he done to miggy was a damn disgrace fair enough last man was there but he wouldnt have stopped miggy scoring

There was long, slow moving queues to get in the East stand, the majority of folk waltzed through without issue, took me 25 minutes to get in, instead of the usual 5mins.
I suspect about 1 in 50 had a problem at the gate which produced the delay, hopefully those folk have resolved whatever their issue is and weāll be back to normal next home game.

Comment #194Hibbit – went upto ground really early, just before four so no probs. Always like to watch the lads warm up.
Tonali and Gordon stood out in the warm up to be fair.
Wonder who Eddie is after as his last little piece of the transfer window jigsaw.
Just cant see Arsenal letting us have Tierney.
A big powerful left back who is good getting forward should be a priority.

Comment #195I was apprehensive before they game yesterday but Wow. Simply, Wow.
Martinez had the game of his life although he was fortunate not to be sent off.
The ref was garbage as usual. Cash couldn’t cope with Gordon and kicked him all over the pitch before eventually being booked.
Gordon committed 1 foul and was immediately booked. Shocking.

Comment #196Interesting to see how Rice adapts. Apparently Arsenal want him to play higher up the pitch so the comparisons with Tonali become more relevant than they have been to date.
Bruno’s weakness was always his total lack of pace but Tonali is a yard quicker and he doesn’t hang around as long as Bruno on the ball. It was a stunning debut.
Isak was unreal too. Maybe Miggy wasn’t as dangerous as before but his pressing is unreal. Defences get zero time with those two and Gordon on the teamsheet.

Comment #200Beauty of having Tonali now is that Bruno can be rested here and there and vice versa. Same with Wilson for Isak, Gordon for Barnes or Miggy. We are most definitely getting in another defender too. Eddie seems assertive about it
