Here are the video highlights from NBC Sports of our 5-1 beating of Aston Villa this afternoon in our first league game of the season.
An (another) incredible performance from Eddie Howe’s side and we could be even better than last season, but of course, we have a lot more games to play this season with the Champions League – and we mustn’t get carried away.
Well, not too much, anyway.
🙂
But the result and performance in our first game of the season could hardly have been better.
We wonder what Sandro Tonali will be thinking tonight – he put in a world-class performance today, scored after 6 minutes, and it just how good our recruitment team is – led by Sporting Director Dan Ashworth.
Newcastle are in a good place right now – amnd it’s likelyto get better too – hope so.
Here are the highlights (you can put it on full screen by clicking at the bottom right corner after you hit the link) that will have the City Center of Newcastle buzzing all next week.
🙂
Here is Eddie Howe’s interview with NBC Sports after the game.

Comment #201It’s a pity Diaby isn’t a press animal or I think we wud have gone for him. He’s a serious performer and a brilliant signing for them.

Comment #202Tonali is actually better than Bruno.
Barnes is so underrated. He will get us 10 to 15 goals a season. Miggy would never have scored that goal.
We just need the centre halves to score. West Ham scored 15 from corners. Zouma is a beast. Just imagine where we would have been last season with 15 extra goals ? Our pretty boys need to put their heads where it hurts. Lascelles can do it but never hets a game

Comment #204Tonali can only make Bruno more committed and better.
Bruno wont enjoy somebody becoming the crowd’s new fave.
Lovely player Bruno and i would have thought Tonali playing next to him can only create more space for him to do his magic.

Comment #205Tonali is so arrogant on the ball. He knows he’s the best and lets everybody see it.
We need cover at the back coz we cannot expect 30 years olds to play 60 games.
Dan is CH. He is no LB.

Who should be starting for England.
Botman is immense an all. Covers both Burn and Schar. One man back four he is.

Comment #208Burn was immense in that 2nd half
Diaby caused a lot of problems in the first but in true Burn fashion he seems to just get the measure of a player later on and even if they are faster than him he just seems to dominate that side
Trippier had also learned his lesson with Watkins only got caught out for that chance that Cash missed but dealt with him very well for the full game

Comment #209Interesting point from Craig Hope about Martinez taking down Miggy. He wasn’t the last man, but there was only one player really after that between Miggy and the goal, and they couldn’t use their hands (legally) like a goalkeeper could. So in a different scenario, if a striker is going through and the last defender pulled him down with just the gk to beat, he would get sent off. Martinez was very lucky not to be sent off yesterday.
In a way, I am glad he wasn’t as it would have been used as an excuse of us battering them. Also, it was great to watch Isak chip him….haha

Comment #210I love the way the commentators say we have a big team for corners and Tripps has a great delivery.
What they fail to add is that we never score

Comment #222Couple of other points:
– how amazing were we at just passing it out from, and around, the back. We take it for granted now but I can’t recall ever when we have done that in such an accomplished, effective manner.
– whilst it’s a great win, and let’s enjoy it, one swallow does not make a summer and all that. Same with Tonali. There will be great and bad games as we go so let’s enjoy the ride.

I’m so pleased (in the end) that Martinez wasn’t sent off as they’d have definitely used that as the excuse.
Much better that we battered them with 11 men.
Yesterday I posted that I was happy with the team selection and that the 2 concerns were, is Tonali up to speed and will Diaby crucify Burn.
Tonali answered the question emphatically and Burn once again proved he can handle pacey wingers. He didn’t put a foot wrong yesterday. I can see why Howe likes him there. He’s such a safe bet, you know exactly what you’re getting.

I understand your Scottish nan getting the Sunday Post but I had an auntie, a born and bred geordie with geordie parents, who got it. Like you, my interest was The Broons and Oor Wullie. If I remember rightly, it had a strong Scots, parochial conservative line. It’s interesting that its publisher, DC Thompson, is still going strong as I presume are the Dandy and The Beano are.

I came across an old Sight and Sound concert on the BBC iPlayer – Curtis Mayfield with a superb, laid-back band. If he’s one for you, the concerts well worth a look.

Comment #229I hope it never happens but with Tonali looking brilliant would the club be tempted by a huge offer for Bruno?
This would help overcome FFP. restraints we are shackled with at present.
Just a thought that popped into my head when someone earlier posted that Bruno would be not be happy about being displaced as no 1 .

If the offer is big enough of course they would, all clubs do. Looking at the going rate these days though it is not worth accepting under £100M for a player like Bruno.

Comment #231Morning all, I see I’m not the only one nursing a hangover. That performance was worth celebrating though.
Tonali’s debut has jumped into my all time top three. SuperMac v Liverpool, Mickey Quinn v Leeds and now Tonali v Villa. Don’t ask me to rank them though.
Lesh, Swablr, many moons ago I worked for the Sunday post. 2am, waiting for the trucks from Dundee at Newcastle Central Station. There were some interesting sights when the clubs chucked oot mind! The Broons and Oor Wullie were required reading back then. Happy days. 🙂

Comment #232Cheers Lesh. I think I remember that Sight and Sound concert, Curtis Mayfield playing guitar and a 3 or 4 piece behind him. Great that it’s on iPlayer, I’ll definitely have a dive into that one, thanks.
I was in my adult years before I realised there were subtle regional tints in the Beano, like, for instance a character called “Mayor Orless”, which I assumed was a nod to Geordie, but now you mention it, may have been Scottish.
Yep, I read the Beano long into my advancing years. 🙂

I think you saw yesterday why Howe wasn’t as keen on Diaby as some of our scouting team (hopes words) he did look good attacking
But there was quite a few times in the game he was being told to tuck in or close someone down by Emery I just think Howe didn’t fancy another ASM project where you are having to get them to do the basics in the press
Whereas all of our wingers are just on it that part of the game is already instilled in them

Comment #236on bruno, he is very very important to our team, just look at bruno, big joe and tonali thats some battling midfield there and we also have miggy and gordon along with barnes and murphy who are workaholics, the team needs that, the only problem i have is we need a good quality central defender with speed and no determination, id also like another striker but like said the other day gordon and andersen can play up there as well as we saw in the american series
as eddie howe says one game at a time, as long as they have a good try thats all we expect
