NBC Video Highlights: Manchester City 1 – Newcastle 0 – City Show How Good They Are – Plus Howe Press Conference After Game

After our tremendous showing at home to Aston Villa in the season opener last weekend, we were hoping for maybe even our first league win at Manchester City since way back in 2003.

But it wasn’t to be, and City came out as worthy winners with Newcastle nowhere near the top form we needed last night to get a decent result – a draw or a win.

The Man of the Match was Phil Foden, and Newcastle just couldn’t contain the brilliant 23-year-old Stockport-born England International.

The winning goal came after 31 minutes when Foden set up Alvarez, who slammed the ball past Pope, who may have got a glove to the ball.

Newcastle were better in the second half but Foden set up several chances for Erling Haaland, but he didn’t have a good night and wasted several opportunities.

Elliott Anderson came on in the second half and again looked like some player in central midfield – Anderson must be given a Premier League start soon this season – he has earned his chance.

It could be positive that this game came so early in the season, and now, if we didn’t know before – we know that we still have a way to go to becoming one of the consistent top 6 or top 4 sides in the Premier League.

Here’s what Eddie Howe thought of the game in his press conference after the game – disappointed.

Next up are Liverpool at home next Sunday afternoon in the late game (4:30pm KO) and we could do with a good win and performance in that game.

Eddie Howe on what changed in the second half against Man City:

“Mentality. Simple as that. I thought there was a change in focus and a change in energy. We were fearless, we were braver and we got our rewards for that. We were a lot more front-foot and won the ball back in dangerous areas but it just didn’t translate into anything meaningful.”

Yah, we were much better in the 2nd half, thats for sure. Still not at our deadly best, but much better.

On that note, how great a manager is Eddie? The more I see of him the more impressed I get. The way he conducts himself in interviews, the football he has brought. Everything is just spot on.

I had this conversation with a friend of mine… Who are you most hated clubs and why? None of us selected Sunderland in top 3 and that might be because we arent local and have that rivalry with people around us or it might be because Sunderland are simply irrelevant right now.

My clubs are in this order:

    Man Utd
    Liverpool
    Villa
    Chelsea
    Sunderland
    Spurs

Your choice of words is showing the team a complete lack of respect, sh!t or really really poor, potato tomato. Saying you called them shite because you thought it would be 1-3 makes you sound like a petulant child throwing his toys out of the pram because you didnt get your own way. It wasn’t even a ‘shit’ performance, it just wasn’t one of our best.

Really hope we are mentally at it against Liverpool. Although we played well against them in both games last season, we still lost both games and Liverpool will be raising their game for us.
I’m confident that we will be though so hopefully we’ll get the win.

    Mund, Ibiza.

We sat back as soon as the whistle went. Face facts, doesn’t matter what the other team did, we showed nothing of what we are about yesterday. Gordon and Almiron shit themselves on the wings and left isak like a mannequin.

He set us up not to be beaten by 3+ and that’s what we got.

I adore Eddie but he does set the team up differently against better opposition and I get why he does it but why not have a go? Everything was in our favour yesterday and we bottled it

webbonufc…I don’t think any facts are being ignored and I’ve said that we were off it from the first whistle. I think Man City won the psychological game during the walk out.

I disagree with the conclusion that it was due to Eddies instruction before KO. Eddie’s comments after the game tie in with that too. We attacked more (albeit not very well) in the 2nd half, after Eddie gave them more instruction. He didn’t like the 1st half performance.

It’s okay, we just disagree on the intention. I think it was a player reaction to opposition, you think it was management instruction due to opposition. No biggie.

Thinking on it, I suppose the biggest argument would be Gordon. It was obviously his job to track Walker. Was that Eddie being too defensive, or just an obvious need? He could have just let Burn deal with it, but I’m not sure that would have been a good call.

    Ibiza.

If everyone agrees it would be boring haha.
Gordon did ok but wouldn’t take on walker, yes he has the pace but wouldn’t you at least try your luck? As for Almiron, he didn’t entertain going past his man once and ignored the overlap a fair few times leaving us exposed.

    Raj.

Not emotions whatsoever. This was our best chance of beating them, players out, fatigued and beginning of the season and we sat back. I’d have said go out on your shields boys and show them we are true contenders for years to come.

Things changed at half time, so that tells me the game plan wasn’t working so Eddie changed things? I didn’t see city’s change?

I despair at people saying we got beat by the champions, so how do you topple champions? By beating them and having a go. We were too defensive yesterday even with the 433. Too many players bottled it and showed too much respect. We need to make teams respect us and yesterdays performance isn’t going to do that.

Shout out to Botman, handled Haaland like a boss.

    Valle,
Because aside from NUFC I support VfB Stuttgart (I lived there for a while and used to go to their games)

Stuttgart fans don’t like Bayern cos they are neighbouring states. The game is know as the “Sourthern derby” in Germany. The there are the obvious reasons on top which fans of all other German teams share with Stuttgart (take all the other German teams best players and hot prospects, far too dominant etc)

I would quite like NUFC to draw Bayern in the CL and kick their arse’s – twice!

Good points webbo, you are not being unfair.

We can’t go around talking ourselves up before a game and then put out heads in the sand if we barely lay a glove on the opponents.

It’s a theme of this blog. Rampant optimism = good fan. Disappointing critiquing after = Mackem.

Nobody is disrespect Eddie or the players but I think we looked better against them last year at their place

And given our improved squad and high morale, and all the stuff we said about de Bruyne etc, that’s the disappointment. But don’t say it whatever you do.

We were in the game all the way to the end, the manager sets us up in a way he sees fit and gets it right most of the time, he obviously seen things in the game and changed it up, who knows what would have happened if we’d gone after them straight away. We can’t just say “he got it wrong” every time we don’t win, I don’t think that’s fair.

Many fans on here claim we have some world class players in our team, well one player i can definitely put in that category is Botman.
When you can keep the best striker in the world quiet for 90 mins then there is no question about his quality, both Botman and Shar would of been the only 2 players who would of graced the Man C side last night, they were footin awesome.

As for teams i dislike. I dislike Spurs, but i hate Manure and Liverpool for reason iv`e said many times on here, a toxic bunch.

I was disappointed we didn`t get anything last night but next weeks game against that horrible lot and their owners is the game i am praying we win.
To beat the living crap out of Dr Teeth`s bunch would make my season tbh, that`s until we do the same against that other horrible bunch from Salford.

Don`t be too down about losing yesterday lads n lasses, we were outplayed but not disgraced, and it was against the best club side in the world bar none.

Lets sort them scouse footers out next week and all will be forgotten imo.

Just one correction – Man City are not world champions, Real Madrid are. Man city could win that this season though.

Thinking about it the club World Cup will be considerably more difficult in the coming years given the way Saudi teams are going. Good chance one of their teams will be the first team that isn’t from Europe or South America to win it.
