After our tremendous showing at home to Aston Villa in the season opener last weekend, we were hoping for maybe even our first league win at Manchester City since way back in 2003.
But it wasn’t to be, and City came out as worthy winners with Newcastle nowhere near the top form we needed last night to get a decent result – a draw or a win.
The Man of the Match was Phil Foden, and Newcastle just couldn’t contain the brilliant 23-year-old Stockport-born England International.
The winning goal came after 31 minutes when Foden set up Alvarez, who slammed the ball past Pope, who may have got a glove to the ball.
Newcastle were better in the second half but Foden set up several chances for Erling Haaland, but he didn’t have a good night and wasted several opportunities.
Elliott Anderson came on in the second half and again looked like some player in central midfield – Anderson must be given a Premier League start soon this season – he has earned his chance.
It could be positive that this game came so early in the season, and now, if we didn’t know before – we know that we still have a way to go to becoming one of the consistent top 6 or top 4 sides in the Premier League.
Here’s what Eddie Howe thought of the game in his press conference after the game – disappointed.
Next up are Liverpool at home next Sunday afternoon in the late game (4:30pm KO) and we could do with a good win and performance in that game.

Comments are always welcome.

Take the City game.
Some posters will never accept criticism of the team. It’s just a fact.
I call it as I see it.
After many games praising the players and team, I thought the midfield performance was woeful and we showed them too much respect. Defence was great and attack had no support.
Reasonable? But what’s the point debating with another guy who describes it as “decent?” I know he will never change his mind after 15 years.
Then the messenger gets it. My view is not just critical but a vilification which makes me seem like a Toon hater.
Never ending circle and best to just withdraw and wait for the next game. See you Sunday. Abuse once a week is ample

And surely if somebody thinks that your, imo over the top criticism of a team that has delighted us for over a year and a half now, is out of order then I’m entitled to tell you that on here.

Comment #805Please tell me who won’t allow criticism of the team or players…?
Please tell me who are these fans on here who are telling others they can’t be disappointed…?
These are simple questions that haven’t been answered but a good few are running with it as it’s absolutely gospel.
I’ve not seen one blogger on here tell another blogger they can’t be disappointed or they can’t criticise a player…

Regarding my address
First choice
W/Bay – Northumberland
2nd W/Bay – North Tyneside
Last W/Bay T&W
I’m sure there are those South Shields etc who would prefer South Tyneside to the other option T&W

Comment #809jimiley – I think you’re entitled to that opinion as long as you’re not resorting to abuse. I definitely think it goes too far when comments turn grossly negative towards specific players too, fans don’t tend to appreciate their own players being slammed when you consider it unreasonable.
I’d argue that you have to consider the opposition in the assessment. Yes, we were second best to Man City in midfield but I think woeful is harsh. We’re not a million miles away though.

Comment #810Aaaaaanyway, to actual football chat….
I wonder if Howe will be thinking of mixing things up at all for the Liverpool match. Back at home where the same 11 dismantled Aston Villa, but same midfield struggled to get control away at Man City. Stick or twist? Guess it depends if Joelinton has any issue as well. If he does, I can see Anderson getting the nod, if he doesn’t then I think we’ll see the same midfield again.
That midfield 3 of Bruno, Tonali and Big Joe will only get stronger the more game time they have together so makes sense to try and keep them playing together for a decent run.

Comment #812Adamn…Not sure Anderson would get the nod over Longstaff. Didn’t he come on first for Joelinton against City?
I’d be happy with either.
Unless we have injuries, I expect the same line up as the last two.

I think Longstaff did yeah, I just wondered if that was more to do with Howe recognising Man City were winning the midfield battle. At home against Liverpool, I think we’ll naturally be more on the front foot and attacking, so Anderson may get the nod following a great pre season.
Wouldn’t mind him, Longstaff or Big Joe if he’s fit to play though!

Comment #824Newcastle United head coach, Eddie Howe, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Lewis to Newcastle United.
“He is a player we have tracked closely, as have a number of clubs, so it’s very pleasing to secure him and to add a player of his quality, versatility and high potential to our squad.
“I’d like to thank everyone involved for their tireless work to bring in the players we have.
“A lot of time, effort and resource goes into a transfer window, but we have a real togetherness at all levels here and I appreciate that teamwork and support.”

Comment #825There is no better way to start the day than with a laugh!
After a decent start to the FPL season in GW1 I had, what can only be described as, a crap game in GW2; although I somehow won the H2H.
I then checked out the Ed Harrison Fantasy League and came across, in 198th place, “Kickapoo Tacklejuice” and checked out his team; it’s worth a look!
Thanks to “qf t” for making my day; obviously someone who knows how to enjoy himself.

Comment #826jimiley It’s as if we’re criticising those certain posters personally. It’s way over the top saying if we say one bad thing we’re not true supporters. Same as when thousands of fans give up ST under MA we were called traitors and not real fans.
Anyway Lewis hall is a great signing imo as is Tino and Tonali. Barnes isn’t too bad either.

Hope Howe learn a thing or two from Pep regarding how to counter specific teams, but then you need players with great reading of the game. I feel this is most manager’s weakest point. You can see Arteta experimenting something weird with Partey and White, although it’s still early stage.

It’s two games in and I think Tonali will be a huge asset to the team, but…
He is a very similar type of player to Bruno and whilst he may be more physical, like Bruno he isn’t the biggest, and against City we lost possession far too easily once we’d gained the ball from their attacks. That made it really difficult to get our attacks going, especially in the first half.
City also turned our pressing into a strength for them by continually passing the ball sideways and back and the quality and speed of their passing made our forwards and mids run non stop. How many times did we win a ball off a press? Very rarely. City then had Foden running into spaces as they opened us up and he was outstanding.
Guardiola’s tactic, IMO, was to tire us out and wait for that space, when you have technically gifted players of City’s callibre a high press isn’t always the best tactic.
In the second half we sat deeper, invited City on and passed quickly to the flanks when we got possession. That worked far better than the high press of the first half.
Back to Foden; neither Tonali or Bruno can carry the ball forward at speed from CM the way that Foden does. We do have a player who can, Anderson. I’m not saying he is in Foden’s class but I am saying he brings something to our CM that neither Bruno, Tonali. Jo or Longstaff do. And, he is physical and a goal threat.
My guess is that, even though it’s only two games in, the City game will have given Eddie much food for thought.

Comment #833jimiley @801 – I often disagree with you but I think your assessment of the City game is spot on. I don’t know if we showed them too much respect or were spooked by playing the Champions but we were way off our best. However I’m sure Eddie will sort them out and we’ll be much better again Liverpool.

‘Chelsea is pleased to confirm midfielder Ollie Harrison has joined the club after signing a scholarship agreement.
The 16-year-old arrives from Newcastle United and will continue his development this season with our Under-18s, who started their campaign on Saturday with a victory over Crystal Palace.
Harrison has been capped by England at under-16 level and was part of the side that this year won the Mondial Montaigu Tournament in France.
Welcome to Chelsea, Ollie!’

Does he bring in Anderson or Lobby , or does he keep it the same?
One thing I do know is that Liverpool are no Man City and should only be shown whatever respect they deserve.. No more.
With a full St James . This will be a totally different atmosphere and match

Comment #839Some interesting views and thoughts on who should be playing at the weekend. Personally, I think Anderson deserves a shot as he offers something different and his pre season shows he is definitely ready to make a big impression.
I thought towards the end of last season that Big Joe looked left of the attacking 3 than he did in midfield so wouldn’t mind seeing him there again. We have so many wide options now though, it’s tricky to know what the best combo will be. Big Joe may have looked good there due to his link up and interchanging with Willock, so may not have as much impact there with Willock missing.
