NBC Video Highlights: Manchester City 1 – Newcastle 0 – City Show How Good They Are – Plus Howe Press Conference After Game

After our tremendous showing at home to Aston Villa in the season opener last weekend, we were hoping for maybe even our first league win at Manchester City since way back in 2003.

But it wasn’t to be, and City came out as worthy winners with Newcastle nowhere near the top form we needed last night to get a decent result – a draw or a win.

The Man of the Match was Phil Foden, and Newcastle just couldn’t contain the brilliant 23-year-old Stockport-born England International.

The winning goal came after 31 minutes when Foden set up Alvarez, who slammed the ball past Pope, who may have got a glove to the ball.

Newcastle were better in the second half but Foden set up several chances for Erling Haaland, but he didn’t have a good night and wasted several opportunities.

Elliott Anderson came on in the second half and again looked like some player in central midfield – Anderson must be given a Premier League start soon this season – he has earned his chance.

It could be positive that this game came so early in the season, and now, if we didn’t know before – we know that we still have a way to go to becoming one of the consistent top 6 or top 4 sides in the Premier League.

Here’s what Eddie Howe thought of the game in his press conference after the game – disappointed.

Next up are Liverpool at home next Sunday afternoon in the late game (4:30pm KO) and we could do with a good win and performance in that game.

Anyone know the answer to this…I have Watkins in my FPL, so just checked to see if he got an assist off the back of the penalty (he did). If he had taken the penalty, would he have got the goal and assist (presuming he scored, obviously)?

    Ibizatoon,
No, you don’t get the assist for winning a pen, maybe it’s because it would narrow the pool of strikers you would choose from, you’d only have pen taking strikers in your team.

Raj…I did get the assist, so is it only that you wont get the assist and goal if it’s the same person then?

    Ibizatoon,
Aye, you get an assist for winning one if it’s scored but not if you take it for some reason.

Raj…Fair enough, at least it’s something. Wasn’t sure it’d even be considered an assist.

Aye, decent strike by Diaby there.

Sure it was disappointing, more that City bossed the game for 70 minutes than the scoreline. And if we’re really being honest, as much as our subs did well, some of that shift in the last 20 minutes was probably City trying to put the game in the freezer and changing their focus to not conceding. I sort of throw the last 20 out as a barometer.

Does anyone feel like we would have been as ascendant in the last 20, if this were the first leg of a knock-out round? We only became a force in the match after more or less throwing caution to the wind, which isn’t sustainable.

It’s only a reality check not just to EH, the players, supporters, DA, YAR, AS, that there is still a big gap between where the club is and what it aspires to. If we had to receive an education, the earlier the better.

    HobokenToon,
I think it’s overlooked a bit how far we’ve come, it was less than two years ago that we had Steve Bruce in charge of the team.

Oh no doubt Raj, I’m enjoying every step journey. the disappointment is in context of the larger picture for sure. Still, I had allowed myself to hope that with the new additions we MIGHT have been further along than we are. 70 minutes is a very small sample size but my hunch is that it is actually representative of the difference between us and City. MUCH smaller than it once was, but still notable.

    HobokenToon,
Where we finish at the end of the season will give us an idea, not away to Man City, they battered Lpool, Arsenal and Man U there last year, some teams will get done 7+ there this season, I fear for Luton 😀

    He got it wrong yesterday.

We were never in that game yesterday. City just controlled it and didn’t even get out of second gear.

He didn’t get it wrong when we got humped by villa 3-0.

Am I the only 1 who thinks we need a left footed left winger ala Robert Ginola?

Are they nearly extinct because apart from Kostic I can’t think of anyone else?

Jail at 92, we know that.

The key point in that we were optimistic of being closer. The score was 1-0 but it wasn’t really a better performance than 2-0 last time.im sure Eddie and the boys are cheesed, so im sure it’s OK for fans to be cheesed too.

It’s not the end of the world obviously. It’s still an interesting question re what teams are better than us. Maybe Arsenal

    And that’s it ? 🙂

    My visit to the Etihad.
My son was picked out had to go to ticket office next to away end took all of 2 minutes no problem. If you are thinking of passing ticket on this was a plus to not do it.
Able to sit in concourse no drunks in sight half time no crowds easy to get a drink. No one pissing in the sink what a pleasure to attend a away game with people who went for the game and not a piss up. More like this Newcastle a pleasure to attend shame about the result.

I had this conversation with a friend of mine… I don’t hate anyone but the Clubs I intensely dislike are:-

    Everton
    Aston Villa
    Chelsea = Spurs
    Man Utd = Liverpool
    And …….yes you’ve guessed
    Sunderland

I used to like Villa ‘till their fans took the P when we were relegated now I take great delight when we beat them!

So…really disappointing show yesterday. Not necessarily the outcome but by how outclassed we were. Last season we won one game against the top 5 so yesterday was an opportunity to show that we had taken the next step. I can’t see that we did. It looked like Kids vs Dads

Could get toxic at this club.

    53 mins
    Post update
    Aston Villa 3-0 Everton

Eight minutes into the second half and some Everton fans are leaving.

    Who can blame them?

    79 mins
    Post update
    Aston Villa 4-0 Everton

I’m not sure if any Everton fans are left but I applaud those who are, their side has offered so, so little to give them encouragement today.

    15.48
Everton fans can’t take it anymore, the away end has emptied out pretty quickly

And opinions are what makes the world go round. Some fair points made on both accounts.

I despise Liverpool and what makes it worse, I’m from Liverpool so have to put up with their shit daily. Klopp is obsessed with us. I hope we put on a decent display next week and wallop them. Going to miss it as I’ll be in the air ?

Just to correct something said earlier the Amazon doc is not available worldwide. NUFCs statement says:

“The series will now be shown on Prime Video in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, while the club will update supporters in other territories with more information very soon.”

Munster. In my opinion, there’s a fundamental flaw in what you are stating. You, and many others, built up this optimism* and then when the team did not live up to your (and others’) optimistic wants/expectations, then you are very disappointed.
*where did this optimism come from? We had one good game against Villa, which was fairly tight up till 60-mins or so. Where else did it come from? What seriously made you and others think we would go to The Etihad and at least draw, or even beat them? We are getting closer to City, but there is a way to go yet.

By the way, my post is not defeatist, it is my realistic perspective. I think we can give City a good game (home or away) almost every time. We are not their equal yet though and you just have to look at bookies’ odds to see that too.
I was disappointed with the performance but one swallow doesn’t make a summer 🙂
