After losing 1-0 at Manchester City last weekend in our first defeat of the season we have a tough home game on Sunday against Liverpool – it’s the late KO game at 4:30pm.
Let’s hope we can get the win, which is what we need.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Yes, it’s a tough game but I’m breaking with my usual tradition and predicting a 3-1 win. 🙂

Comment #2Magic – you’re bad again to imagine The Bard is a woman but wouldn’t want a pint!
I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure The Bard has previously identified as a man. Either way, I’d certainly offer them a drink.

Comment #5So Mike Dean was on Var duty, and didn’t take action, as the Ref was a friend,
Is that right? Wow just wow, and there’s bias, no corruption.
And those match officials, all in Manchester United hospitality lounge after just refereeing a match.
Does this happen normally?

Well we can`t say for sure what gender the Bard really is !! But it`s beside the point in the grand scheme of things, the Bard still wouldn`t have to buy a drink FACT ;D 😀

Comment #10Just read it. That’s mad. Not doing their job because the pressure of the job is too hard and the guys a mate? Get another job then.

Comment #11Ibiza – he’s no longer a ref so he admitted to a mistake that he made, why he was stood down, and why he stopped being a ref.
He admitted to a mistake that led to him quitting being a ref. Respect to him for doing that.

Comment #16To be fair refs do have a tough job and most of them have families to support so the odd (alleged) charitable contribution to some refs benevolent fund from certain clubs has to be reciprocated in some way.
What’s the problem with that?

Comment #18Ibiza – show me one person who has never made a mistake in their job caused by poor judgement. We’ve all done it at some point or another. Yeah, it was a poor decision but we’re dealing with human beings here so it will happen from time to time.
I think he only quit being a ref at the end of last summer, not sure what he’s doing now but I imagine media and speaking gigs will pay the bills for a good few years.

Comment #19Davas – according to the article, that VAR incident was partially what led him to quit at the end of last season. He dreaded the job. Obviously, it wasn’t for him.

Comment #21His new job is as an extra pundit on SSN’s soccer Saturday show, giving his opinion “live” on decisions during matches reviewing what the refs are doing and deciding if they’re right or wrong (in his opinion).
Conspiracy theorists could have a field day analysing how he got that job!! 😀

Comment #22TDS…I’m not sure why that would the exercise. Of course all people make mistakes, in all professionals. They’d be called out though, especially if it was to protect a mate. This is professional support and the importance of VAR is clear. I think it’s only right that in light of this, questions are asked.
Not an attack on Dean or how he’s handled himself since.

Comment #23Is admitting to not intervening on a VAR call because he wanted to save his friend some grief a mistake…? It’s clearly thought out and why a lot of us have been saying what we have been for years.
A mistake 😆 ffs

You’re an absolute clown/knacker of the highest order, everyday you cause disruption and trouble on here, which IMO is clearly staged (why though?). You are a true scourge of this great Newcastle United football blog you are and the day you actually find a job and stop scrounging from the taxpayer or maybe find a hobby to fill your time so you don’t frequent here as much, would be a great day for the blog.

Comment #27Ibiza – agreed, it should be called out and steps introduced to try and make sure it doesn’t happen again. Could improve the vetting process to make sure that a ref is cut out for correcting a colleague’s (and friend’s) decision. Obviously he wasn’t cut out for it.

Comment #28This isn’t some grassroots football game this is the PL!
The richest and most watched league in world football.
Let’s give respect to refs who make decisions for their friends and don’t intervene just incase it gave him more grief… 🙄

Comment #30AI to replace refs. Take personality, friendships, feelings and bias completely out of the hands of VAR, programme a computer to review analyse and decide outcomes, be done in seconds, no delays or fannying on. C’mon PL, you’ve got the money, get it done.
There, how’s that for clear and positive thinking, oops they’ve just offered me a job as a VAR official, scrap the above. 😆

You would need the usual 3 x on field personnel and a 4th in case of illness to one of other 3.
Cameras linked to the AI would constantly view every bit of action from every angle and when a ref blows his whistle for anything the AI would instantly respond with, “foul – yellow”, or “foul – red”, or “no foul, continue”. “Offside”, “not offside”, “interfering with play”, “No 10’ in red’s a wanker” “get him off”. Etc….:D

Comment #36Agreed Raj, I think it should be investigated but I wonder if there’s any action they can take against him now that he’s no longer a ref. At least they should apply a ban to him for refereeing again due to incompetence and also bringing referees into disrepute.
Actions have consequences.

Comment #37Major question: If there as a perfect system getting all the decisions right all the time, would we as football fans, like it?
Would perfection remove 90% of the post match discussions in pubs and blogs around the world leaving us bugger all to discuss apart from EH bingo? 😀

Comment #39CBob – I with you on that comment. It’s long been my “conspiracy theory” that the authorities have been against using technology partially because it would create less discussion in the media. Less discussion means fewer hits and clicks, which means less revenue for the companies who run those sites and rely on advertising.
