Eddie Howe’s Press Conference For Newcastle’s Tough Game At Brighton Tomorrow

Here is Eddie Howe’s press conference for our fourth league game of the season at Brighton tomorrow afternoon: we really need a win with a win and two defeats so far in the league this season.

And yesterday we were drawn in the same group as Borussia Dortmund, PSG, and AC Milan in the Champions League – every game will be very difficult.

But it does give us a chance to measure how close we are to the top teams in Europe at the moment.

Some great Eurpean nights ahead for our fans.

How Will Newcastle Fare At Brighton?

Afternoon mate, in all honesty i much preferred the old system of the days of the European Cup when the little clubs around Europe could be drawn against the big glamorus clubs, i myself went to see a lot of Irish clubs competing against big clubs such as Benfica Liverpool Man Utd Celtic FC Porto etc etc. The champions league was devised purely to generate more money for the bigger clubs, to the detriment of the smaller clubs around Europe!! No matter how you dress it up, in my opinion it`s a very unfair system against the little clubs Lesh.

200 million for a player reaching the end is two thirds what they paid for us. Church in his prob 2 mil a week wages and prob 3 year contract and they are paying more for Salah than they paid for this great club
Proof that football has gone mad and the Saudis have more money than sense

There is seeding on a lot of sports so I can kind of live with that but not the fact that Taco highlighted in that teams, that have a better record in the past in europe, get a bigger share of the pot in the current year. That, to me, is totally wrong.

It proves western greed and any club/player will do anything for money.
All tgey have to do, is pay!
Thet care less about money than ‘we’ do!
‘We’ care more about money than they do.

It’s called GREED! So, who’s dumb?

Davas – the argument is that the bigger clubs generate more revenue for the CL in terms of viewers and therefore sponsorship and advertising. Which game gets more worldwide viewers, Copenhagen v Salzburg or Man Utd v Barcelona? If the bigger clubs didn’t get more money then a breakaway would definitely have happened by now.

It’s the same for players too. A striker or flair player is more exciting so often gets paid more. How many people have Isak’s name on their shirt compared to Schar? I’m sure a fair few have Bruno too. Bet there aren’t too many with Burn.

Taco…Just been taking a look at the rules, have you noticed you can make subs between Tuesday / Wednesday fixtures to maximise your points total, as well as change your captain to someone who hasn’t yet played?

Sport and money is a weird thing. I can understand from a capitalist approach to business that those at the top get more money, it’s how markets work in this sense. The fairness question is far too political and has so many facets it’s not something I’d discuss on a football blog, but that is what it is.

Where sport has a problem is that it is meant to hold a concept of fairness and that through hard work and talent you can achieve. Well many sports, especially football, have drifted away from that in the past 30/40 years significantly.

Speaking purely of football, FFP rules effectively allow those clubs better at marketing/commercial to have an advantage in a sporting sense as they have access to more funds, which just creates a cycle which keeps them at the top, thus earning more funds, and it continues. Rarely do you see a success story other than a one off season where a team breaks through (without other forms of wealth). Whilst it could never be fully mitigated, reasonable steps like salary caps for a squad or transfer spending caps could help level things.

Then when you look into all sports, medical doping isn’t allowed but financial doping is. An athlete can spend huge sums of money for a training camp at altitude but an athlete with less access to wealth can’t take a £50 course of medication which mimics that…even though the outcome is the same. I’m not arguing the rights and wrongs but many things are considered a form of cheating with the exception of financial doping.

Using the idea of ‘competion’ as a euphemism to legitimise capitalism leads to the exact opposite…no competion/monopoly, eventually!

    Der!

    Dead end!

    Let the breakaway commence!

    TDS,
There are too many things in favour of the top teams though. We are lucky in that we can bankroll anything that FFP will allow but most teams are not in that position.

The seeding ensure that the top teams have a more favourable draw thus making it more likely that they will progress. That in turn already gives them more money in most cases via the win bonuses and bonuses for making it to the last 16 etc (but those bonuses are fair because they are the same for all participants and the seeding system is understandable for reason that you and I have both described)

To me allocating a share of the prize pot based on the same rankings though is not fair. Why should Man Citeh automatically get given €36.38 million when Union Berlin get €1.137 million? They got extra prize money in the past when they did what they did in the past 5 years, There is no good reason to award them more just for showing up this year, they would get extra money anyway if they do well again. That rule is a step too far for my liking.

Ibiza, yes you can do that but if you sub out a player who gained points (or switch captain) then you will lose any points that the those players gained.

Lesh – not saying you’re clueless, not at all. Just pointing out that the boat has well and truly sailed on fairness in sport. Our club already benefits from being part of the PL and therefore being in the CL despite only finishing in 4th. It just seems a bit rich for someone to complain that a few clubs are getting preferential treatment over us (which they would say they’ve earned from success in Europe) whereas we get preferential treatment over other clubs who have considerably more success in Europe than us over the last 20 years purely because we’re in the Premier League.

You’re complaining about the situation but what do you actually propose that is even slightly realistic?
