Newcastle ended their three-game losing streak this afternoon with a 1-0 win over Brentford at home with the winner coming from Wilson with a penalty after 64 minutes.
While it certainly wasn’t pretty, the result in this game was more important than the performance, and our lads stuck to it to get our second win of the season.
Newcastle did not look good at all in the first half – but it was much better in the second, and this win will give our boys confidence going forward.
And 9 minutes of added time at the end was a little nerve-racking.
Indeed, in qn earlier game today, Spurs were losing 1-0 at home to Sheffield United before they scored two goals in the 20 minutes of added time to win 2-1 – what’s going on here?
We now have 6 points from 5 games – the same number of points as last season after 5 games.
And here is the photo we get with every win – the lads look very pleased!
🙂
Here are the video highlights of the game today from NBC Sports.
And in detail here is the penalty award that gave Newcastle all 3 points – dare I say this looks like a soft penalty for us?
But Callum has nerves of steel and it was an excellent penalty, under so much pressure.
And on merit Newcastle did deserve the points, but we were nowhere near our best.
Let us know who you think our Man of the Match was.
Inter-Milan beat AC Milan 5-1 at home today – we play at AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Comment #1REPOST:
Strange scrappy game.
– Our front 3 all individually played reasonably well, without really gelling.
– I had Gordon as MOM, basically for his energy.
– Burm is in the team because he’s a good no nonsense defender.
– Still have to be convinced by Longstaff. I’m not buying the thought that we looked worse without him in the team. We won today, but I don’t think he made the difference. Just blocking a pass with an outstretched leg doesn’t work at the top level as the opposition regain the ball, recycle and press on.
– Botman does make a difference.
– Silly ill discipline in the extra time from Gordon, Wilson, and Bruno all gathering cards. The boss needs to have a word

Comment #2Patmania: Good shout, Longstaff may look better after a run in the team. I would rather some of our midfielders came into the team and grabbed the opportunity, making themselves undropable. None have really shone this year to date.

I’d give my vote to Gordon if we had a MOM poll, never stopped scrapping and made the pen for Wilson.
Burn had a terrific game solid at the back and Yes he does support the attack contrary to many viewpoints on here.
Taking him off with ten minutes plus would have been a big mistake.

Comment #7Just relieved to get to the end of that game with 3 valuable points. I’d expect Isak, Almiron, and one or both of Tonali and Joel to start v Milan, probably both if fit. There’ll be rotation this season, so Hall will get his chance, and I hope he takes it, because Dan Burn is a fine pro, but not quite the player we need starting at left back against the better sides. Similarly Anderson, not quite there yet, up against really top opposition as a starter, I think.
……………………Pope.
Trippier……Schar…..Botman…..Burn.
……………………Bruno.
………….Tonali…………Joel.
….Almiron……….Isak………..Barnes.
Tough on Sean, but youd think Tonali will start if fit on his return to the San Siro. Good side that, and a top bench. Our season hasn’t caught fire yet, but it will. I expect a good showing mid week.

Yup, should get at least a point from Milan I think, if not no chance of going second round. They have been going down hill since winning the title. Somehow they muster some form towards the end of last season to get into CL. Last season, Milan and PSG are not as great as their name sound. Dortmund should top the group, hopefully Newcastle can get through with 2 wins and 2 draws.

Typically Longstaff does not stand out but he does a lot of work, he works his bollocks off! He reads the game well, he blocks angles and he makes life difficult for opponents but some people don’t appreciate that aspect of the game.
It is the same with Burn really but in a slightly different way.

AC Milan did not really “muster some form” last season. They are in the CL because Juve got docked points more than any other reason.
I would also suggest it is completely wrong to think that if we don’t get a point out of AC Milan away then we are unlikely to qualify.
I will also add that Dortmund won’t top the group.
PSG have the quality to kill any game but they often don’t. They are flaky and in transition.
All 3 teams are better on paper than they are in reality, and they all play in easier leagues than we do.
We will qualify for last 16. I am sure of it.

I don’t fundamently disagree about Longstaff. My problem is when we’re up against a team who on turn over are quick to transition into attack, we simply can’t afford to give the ball away cheaply in mid fieild. He does it a little too much for my liking, simply becasue he has “toe poked” or just got something onto it. A laudable thing if in defence knocking it out for a corner. I don’t want to seem to be on a downer about the lad. When we’re bossing a game, soem of his work in the otjhe teams half is great, in helping keping things moving forward.

Comment #14Yeah Taco, would be tough on Gordon and also Wilson, but both having played the ninety I think might be rested on Tuesday, that’s all. I think Gordon has played his way into out preferred starting 11, but can’t start every match. He goes full throttle. I like Barnes on the left, Gordon on the right, Isak through the middle, and Wilson off the bench, but I think Miggy will start on Tuesday.

Comment #15Also, when Tonali is in the team, I’d have him at least sharing the fee kicks / corners with Trippier.
Maybe even taking most, allowing Trippeier to hang back. If having to track back quickly, those legs aren’t going to last for ever…

Bang on re: Sean and Burn.
Whereas the usual match day débarcle, where if an attack breaks down, a pass goes astray or Valhalla forfend, the other team try to play…the crying, pissin’ and mianing begins and the catastrophising gets into full swing.
Painful to witness, most unedifying!

Horses for courses. Longstaff is a hugely important squad player for us.
Some people think you need 25 world beaters in a squad but that is not how football actually works 99% of the time. Every team needs players like Longstaff. When he plays he gives his all and when he doesn’t play he isn’t going to have a massive hissy fit and demand a transfer and/or call out the management of the team. Instead he will go back to training and work hard.

Comment #18Taco – well said. Some people forget that you need players who work bloody hard and do the simple or dirty stuff well. Longstaff and Burn 100% for that criteria. Tonali or Hall may be more flash but we’ve won again with Longstaff and Burn starting.

What I base on is the intensity and teamwork of the team I saw last season. Milan and PSG have none really. At least Dortmund played like a team. This season, I have not been following them because I stopped my betting experiment due to Singapore Pools offering really low odds and limited games. Illegal for Singaporean to use international betting service, so they monopolize it.

Comment #22Any three out of Longstaff, Bruno, Joel, Tonali and Willock. Any three out of Barnes, Gordon, Murphy, Miggy, Isak and Wilson. But the defense, I’m just not sold on Dan Burn anymore, as a starter. We are competing at a higher level now, and we need a bit more on the ball than he gives us. Happened to Lascelles, I think it’ll happen to Dan Burn next. That’s football.

Fair point and I agree that I would not start Wilson, has to be Isak for me.
Gordon though is different, yes he played the full game but he is young enough to play again. Not saying he will but I think he could.
Small World,
I fully agree on varying free kick takers. Trips should not be hogging 90% of them.
Clint,
Cheers, I have said it before and I shall say it again – support means support. Anything less is counterproductive. Not everything will go our way but if we lose our heads what does that actually achieve?

Comment #26Well done to the lads……. We needed that to get our season back on track….
A fair bit of tension and hesitancy still in our game first half but we looked more like last season second half…
Barnes showed some of his qualities late on and Lobby will come on from that as he always needs a few games to get back up to speed after a lay off…
We rode our luck mind as Wissa missed a couple of sitters for them and could have had a hat trick….. Milan”ll be a bit fragile on Tuesday after their thrashing today so we should get among em and test 5heir resolve….. HWTL.

I definitely agree that Trips should share out the “Free Kicks” duties. One of the disappointing aspects of our performances is the lack of goals from Corners & Free Kicks
Watching Newcastle is much better now than pre Eddie Howe but returns from above could definitely be greatly improved. 🙂

Dortmund are a decent side but they are not consistent and fight in a league which is essentially a 1 horse race normally. As an aside I like their GK – Gregor Kobel – I think he would be an excellent signing for NUFC.
Nicky,
Of course ultimately what you say will happen over time. Aside from the obvious deadwood (all out on loan) the next for the chopping block is unclear.
Personally, I think Minteh will be part of the squad next season too which will give us more options at RW.
What I am sure of is that next summer is when there will be several changes. That is when our team will really take shape.

Comment #29Callum Wilson underlines importance after new deal!
Fresh from signing a new contract, Callum Wilson was handed his first start of the campaign. You could not say it was not deserved. Wilson had scored 13 goals in his previous 16 league appearances despite only starting six times. When Newcastle needed him, the number nine stepped up.
Wilson had what felt like an eternal wait after Newcastle were awarded a penalty kick midway through the second half, but the England international was the coolest man in the stadium as he confidently dispatched the spot-kick, despite Mark Flekken guessing the right way, and maintained his 100% record for the club.
As the striker told Sky Sports after the game: “Pressure is for tyres, isn’t it?”
Wilson, in the process, drew level with Les Ferdinand in the club’s all-time Premier League goal scorers list. Alexander Isak may be the future, and the club’s record signing to boot, but this was the kind of decisive moment that underlined Wilson’s importance.

Comment #39Newcastle had an unusually long period to prepare for this game, but Eddie Howe was left to work with only a dozen players for the most part after Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak all jetted off on international duty. However, this gap in the club football calendar offered players and staff a chance to reflect, reset and, in the words of Dan Burn, ‘go back to what’s made us so successful, how good we have been at pressing and the intensity that we play’.
However, Newcastle looked far from that side. Howe may have made five changes, with the majority of players being those non-internationals who worked with Howe and his staff during the break, but it was Brentford who raced out of the blocks.
Nick Pope had to be alert to block Aaron Hickey’s early effort after the Bees got in behind Newcastle’s defence far too easily. Time and time again Brentford got in down Newcastle’s left-hand side in the opening stages and cut the ball back across and Yoane Wissa almost connected with one of these deliveries midway through the first half.
In a tight game with few clear cut chances, it took the sluggish Magpies until the 27th minute to finally win a corner and finally ask a question of Brentford’s defence when Sven Botman’s flick-on fell to Bruno Guimaraes, but the Brazilian was denied by Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken. Newcastle took confidence from that opening and the Magpies improved as the game went on, eventually finding a way to win.
It was hardly a vintage display – far from it – but Newcastle showed grit and spirit when the game could have easily got away from them.
You only had to look at Bruno Guimaraes’ reaction at full-time to realise what an important win it was after the midfielder collapsed to his knees and blessed himself.

Excellent point and it could easily be argued that this seasons initial fixtures were harder than last seasons.
Realistically speaking we were always unlikely to get anything out of Citeh away. The Liverpool game was disappointing given the circumstances. Brighton are a damn good side as Man U found out today.
We got some very tricky fixtures out of the way quickly though, a few more points would have been lovely but that is life. Let’s see how other teams fair in those fixtures….
In the meantime we have the opportunity to beat a legendary club at the San Siro!!!
People complaining are just daft.
