Wilson Scores Penalty To Give Newcastle A Much Needed Win Against Brentford

Newcastle ended their three-game losing streak this afternoon with a 1-0 win over Brentford at home with the winner coming from Wilson with a penalty after 64 minutes.

While it certainly wasn’t pretty, the result in this game was more important than the performance, and our lads stuck to it to get our second win of the season.

Newcastle did not look good at all in the first half – but it was much better in the second, and this win will give our boys confidence going forward.

And 9 minutes of added time at the end was a little nerve-racking.

Indeed, in qn earlier game today, Spurs were losing 1-0 at home to Sheffield United before they scored two goals in the 20 minutes of added time to win 2-1 – what’s going on here?

We now have 6 points from 5 games – the same number of points as last season after 5 games.

And here is the photo we get with every win – the lads look very pleased!

🙂

Here are the video highlights of the game today from NBC Sports.

And in detail here is the penalty award that gave Newcastle all 3 points – dare I say this looks like a soft penalty for us?

But Callum has nerves of steel and it was an excellent penalty, under so much pressure.

And on merit Newcastle did deserve the points, but we were nowhere near our best.

Let us know who you think our Man of the Match was.

You can’t argue that two of Italy’s giants were in the semis of the CL, not sure what that says about the CL considering Serie A seems full of PL rejects or has beens

Steve Bruce deserves all the criticism he gets, he doesn`t know the meaning of the word loyalty after screwing over Sheff Wed and is totally been driven by greed.
It`s not as though he was even good at his job as a manager /coach, a total dinosaur who alienated the fans at most of the clubs he was at.
He showed contempt for the Toon and i was sick to the back teeth of him hooplicking Ashley, even though he claimed he was a Geordie managing his home town club.
I give him the nickname TFG, The False Geordie, and i will always refer to him as just that.
His only love is those horrible footers from Salford, rant over.
Not wasting any more time posting about that useless tool.

Thanks for the kind words on setting up Eddie Howe’s CL Bingo however, I cannot take credit for copying Jail’s idea. It’s about time I was able to contribute something more tangible than my ramblings. 😆

I’m wondering if Eddie’s presser will be tomorrow as the team don’t travel until then. But if you’re desperate to get your team in you can enter here. https://www.nufcblog.com/2023/08/18/how-will-newcastle-fare-at-manchester-city-can-we-get-first-league-win-there-in-23-years/comment-page-2/#comments

Do you not think that being the bonehead Shelvey is he did that all of his own volition. Do you in all honesty think that Rafa said ”Right Johnjo, do me a favour, I want you to shoot at their goal from the half way line, there’s a good lad.”

On another note I really wish we’d got Joao Pedro as well as Isak. Going to be some player.

I don’t buy the view that Bruce is or was a man of his time and therefore not to blame for being useless. There is a process called self development which Bruce obviously didn’t bother with.
Given that he was a so called professional he should have ensured that he kept himself up to date with the latest concepts and theories of his chosen profession.
It’s like saying a doctor is not to blame for failing to adopt the latest medical advancements in the treatment of patients because he graduated for medical school 20 years ago.

    Bruce in a nutshell.

Your evaluation of the fella,of course brings into the question of….. WTF were owners/CEO’s actually thinking?

I for one, absolutely love the emergence of these forward thinking tactical managers,of which IMO Eddie is one..

But ONLY if he picks Livro, the morn neet in place of Miggy.. :D:

GUARDIAN – Wilson still perfect from 12 yards

Callum Wilson has taken 10 penalties as a Newcastle player and converted the lot. “Pressure is for tyres,” said the England striker, who has averaged a goal every two games during his three-year St James’ Park career. “Penalty taking is about practice, repetition and composure,” Wilson said. His latest, albeit controversial, spot-kick enabled Eddie Howe’s side to end a run of three straight defeats by “winning ugly”. Despite failing to capitalise on some inviting first-half chances, Brentford probably deserved a draw but that will not worry Howe as his players head to Milan for the club’s first Champions League engagement in two decades. Newcastle’s manager is so paranoid about the Serie A club spying on his preparations that he has exploited a Uefa loophole and made a special request to train on Tyneside rather than at San Siro on Monday before flying to Italy.
    Louise Taylor
    —————————————

If it stops the team from being woken up throughout the night by fireworks, then I think it is a good thing. I take it Louise will not be there, following the rest of her home town.

Right I know that pretty much everyone is aware that our game tomorrow kicks-off at 5:45pm UK time (that is 6:45 pm CET, 4:45pm UTC) but I felt it necessary to re-enforce this is correct thanks to TalkSport spreading misinformation….

On my drive to work today, and again on my way home I was listening to TalkSport and on both journeys I heard an advert they are running which says that their live commentary of our game starts at 7:45pm!! – If they actually do that then they will be going live to a game that has just finished!!

To be fair to them, on a separate piece they said the show starts at 4pm so maybe they know when the kick-off really is cos 3 hrs 45 min mins of pre-match waffle to then figure our they missed the bloody game does sound odd, but their advert is definitely wrong so ignore it.

KICK-OFF is at 5:45pm UK time.

Milan will welcome Newcastle in the Champions League on Tuesday and the Italian side will be eager to repent. The Rossoneri are still deliciously effusive going forward and will have Tomori back in defence to hopefully ensure a more balanced performance.

Charlie yeah I just say that on SSN a few mins ago, they said NUFC’s plane is still over Switzerland so it will be an hour or so yet before the presser.

On a related note I read somewhere that NUFC were staying here until tomorrow, training here in the morning then flying out, but I did think that sounded odd as normally you don’t leave flying out so late in case something goes wrong (and for other reasons) I am glad they are arriving today. I guess the article must have been from some know nothing paper like the Chronic or the Shields Gazette.

I need to stop going on the Shields Gazettes page, at least twice they have written stuff about CL qualification or FFP that was less accurate (or simply wrong) when compared to what I know or researched or worked out in my spare time. It really pisses me off, I am not a paid journalist, I have a full time job in a completely unrelated field.

Not trying to blow my own trumpet here and I certainly don’t want to be a journalist at all (and especially not for a 2 bit rag) it just really annoying me to the point that I often want to write a complaint about their standards of professionalism, but then I realise they will get probably get lost if I try to explain the details of why they are wrong.

I have spoken to,two stalwart Toon supporters today.

They both thought it was a 20.00 kick off.

One doesn’t clock off until 18.30,the other is fine.

But both were unaware of the changed times..

I can only assume it is UEFA,doing a SKY and maximising the TV revenue…
