Newcastle ended their three-game losing streak this afternoon with a 1-0 win over Brentford at home with the winner coming from Wilson with a penalty after 64 minutes.
While it certainly wasn’t pretty, the result in this game was more important than the performance, and our lads stuck to it to get our second win of the season.
Newcastle did not look good at all in the first half – but it was much better in the second, and this win will give our boys confidence going forward.
And 9 minutes of added time at the end was a little nerve-racking.
Indeed, in qn earlier game today, Spurs were losing 1-0 at home to Sheffield United before they scored two goals in the 20 minutes of added time to win 2-1 – what’s going on here?
We now have 6 points from 5 games – the same number of points as last season after 5 games.
And here is the photo we get with every win – the lads look very pleased!
🙂
Here are the video highlights of the game today from NBC Sports.
And in detail here is the penalty award that gave Newcastle all 3 points – dare I say this looks like a soft penalty for us?
But Callum has nerves of steel and it was an excellent penalty, under so much pressure.
And on merit Newcastle did deserve the points, but we were nowhere near our best.
Let us know who you think our Man of the Match was.
Inter-Milan beat AC Milan 5-1 at home today – we play at AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Basically that is what it is. It is all for TV reasons. But it does mean that we can watch our game and then watch PSG vs Dortmund which kicks off at 8pm tomorrow.
Another good thing is this… Here are all tomorrows games:
5:45pm
AC Milan vs Newcastle United
Young Boys vs RB Leipzig
8pm
Feyenoord vs Celtic
Lazio vs Atlético Madrid
Paris Saint Germain vs Borussia Dortmund
Manchester City vs Red Star Belgrade
Barcelona vs Royal Antwerp
Shakhtar Donetsk vs FC Porto
So, of the 2 games that kick off early almost every neutral fan will be watching our game rather than Young Boys vs Leipzig and the audience for the later games will be fragmented. All eyes are on our game!!
All our other group games are 8pm kick-offs, except Dortmund away that is 5:45 KO too.

Comment #484Since I won’t have time to do this tomorrow between work and getting to the pub, here are AC Milan fans thoughts from English speaking Milan forums:
“F*ck no!”
“Only real advantage that we have is that Newcastle is inexperienced.”
“We’re a better, more experienced team than Newcastle with better individual players, a better manager, better supporters and better owners. We have absolutely no reason to fear them and I’m confident the boys will be able to put Saturday to the back of their minds and get the campaign off to a good start.”
“Bounce back, that’s all that matters. Forza Milan!”
“Last year after being torn apart by Chelsea in London, we won 2-0 vs Juve at San Siro 3 days later. We got this. We should beat Newcastle regardless the result in the Derby”
“Not sure why Giroud is playing every f*cking game, try Okafor or even Jovic, at least they are 100 years younger and they can put some pressure up front.
F*ck pioli really.”
“I’m not even worried tbh. Wil be a comfortable win. 3.0 or something like that. Chuck to score at least 1, and Musah with assist.”
“Lets give Tonali something to cry about.”
(in reply to above) “I think he’s injured. Wasn’t in the squad last league game.” (Note from Taco, wrong he was in the squad we just didn’t risk him off the bench)
“Against most teams we’re fine. It’s defending against a counter attacking 352 that we’re lost. Let’s see what happens tomorrow. Newcastle will probably play on the counter, but they have wingers, so let’s see how Pioli adapts”
“Tonali (and Botman) visiting Milan.
Let’s see if the players and coach too can react following the weekend. Tomori should be back in the first 11.Word is Chukwueze and Pobega will replace Pulisic and Reijnders. The latter is surely questionable.
Newcastle have 2 wins and 3 losses so far in the EPL.”

Durham Town is a classic.
Say hi to Sir Bobby, tell him we’re over in Milan.
Folk singer Roger Whittaker, famous for his 1969 hit song Durham Town and expert whistling, has died at the age of 87.

I could not disagree more. In these games it has to be results over performance or aesthetics every time. Of course having it all is the perfect scenario but given the choice of only one thing it must be a result. No point playing pretty and/or organised football and losing.
I could not care less if we look a bit disjointed or even jammy.
Just beat AC Milan at the San Siro, put it on our list of major European scalps and move on from there. We will have our pretty games and excellent performances anyway sooner or later, and getting any result there will have our players and fans flying far more than some sort of “acceptable” loss cos we played quite well.

Comment #491Interesting to see how our midfield is set up. I think it’ll be Longstaff, Tonali and Bruno, almost certainly, but who plays on the left, I guess Tonali. Any of the three might hold, conceivably, or play on the right, but I don’t see Lobby playing on the left.
Miggy I guess comes in on the left, with Gordon back on the right, and Isak through the middle, and then two great options off the bench in Barnes and Wilson, I’m thinking.
Defence picks itself, but I’m really looking forward to seeing Hall and Livramento being introduced. I’m excited by what they might bring to the side.

Yes it would be a big scalp, but the impact of the team functioning with new players will be felt long term, and we need that for the PL. And those players will really benefit too, especially the ones that might not be sure if they belong at this level.

Comment #494Miggy on the right, of course. Gordon back on the left. I do like Barnes starting on the left, and Gordon on the right, and Isak through the middle, and can see that being our starting front 3 in big games as the season settles in. Miggy works so hard though, and knows how we play so well, there’s very little between the three.

This was from the Evening Chronicle:
” Newcastle will train at Benton on Tuesday before flying out to Milan and, as cliché as it sounds, control the controllables away from prying eyes in the San Siro after the Magpies opted not to test out the pitch on the eve of the game.”
This is reportedly from the Guardian:
“ Newcastle’s manager is so paranoid about the Serie A club spying on his preparations that he has exploited a Uefa loophole and made a special request to train on Tyneside rather than at San Siro on Monday before flying to Italy.”
But, according to reports from Sky News, the NUFC plane is still over Switzerland.
Some Machiavellian moves taking place?

That is exactly the type of rubbish journalism I was on about earlier.

Comment #497Yeah, wow, a win at the San Siro. That’s be something. The thought hadn’t really occured to me until now. We aren’t up to speed yet, and Joelinton and Willock are big misses for us. Both squads fully fit and firing I don’t doubt we have their measure. In this one though, I’m just realistically hoping for an incremental improvement on what we’ve seen so far this term from the side as a unit. But for sure we can win it.

Comment #500That is kind of my point Nicky.
Which makes players more confident? Win at the San Siro, even if we are not playing especially well or play well and lose? In the middle there is the draw of course.
Results breed confidence far more than performances do IMO. There is also the fear factor to consider…get a result there when you are not playing especially well and people notice that sort of thing.

Comment #503A well run Newcastle United can compete with any side. Keegan said the only difference between Newcastle ànd Liverpool is the size of the trophy cabinet, and I’d agree. I’d say already we are at least on a par with Milan and Dortmund, although PSG at their best are something a bit special. New side though really, with Gordon, Tonali and Barnes being worked in, and changing our tactical approach somewhat. This one comes while we are still a work in progress, and with a couple of very good players missing. But I still fancy a performance from us.

Comment #504Cyprus:
Well in my lifetime we have beaten these true European heavyweights:
Barcelona (H) & Juventus (H) and numerous other “lesser teams” but some were good at the time.
We have drawn vs:
Inter Milan* (A), Porto
* before I was born we have beaten Inter Milan.
Our full European history is right here (quite a lot of names on the list)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcastle_United_F.C._in_international_football
* note though that on wiki if it is an away game they still put our score first even if we were the away team.
Like I said though when you look at it there are plenty of teams we beat in Europe.
Fun fact (but one I have mentioned before) – we have never lost a competitive game vs any German team ever. Bring on Dortmund!!!

But for sure you’re hoping for a good performance, that’s the genuine building block, but yeah, of course winning breeds confidence, and confidence is critical.

As I said ideally I would like to see a result and great performance in every way a great performance could be described (tactically, team gelling, aesthetically wonderful free flowing football etc etc)
But, if I can pick only one I pick getting a result. EH, the players and the owners would pick the same choice when they can only pick one option.
We already know that we can play good football at times. It is not like we have to constantly watch the dross that the likes of Bruce, Allardyce, Souness etc dished up anymore.

Apparently according to SSN we have broken some UEFA rule cos we didn’t arrive on time for a press conference. Surely a very minor technicality. How does that rule even work? What is the punishment?
Our press conference took place a tad late but as I understand Milan were late for theirs too (despite the conference being in Milan and obviously their representatives being mainly based in or close to Milan)
I suspect that SSN are dramatizing a nothing story but if they are not I will send Amanda my CV. Total bollox.

I agree a good performance with gelling team gives you a higher chance of winning a game than losing a game so performance needs to improve sharpish otherwise there will be less days or wor b celebrating ladies night.
If we lose tomorrow I wonder how many will blame Eddie because of flight delays and preparation for the game 😉
