Wilson Scores Penalty To Give Newcastle A Much Needed Win Against Brentford

Newcastle ended their three-game losing streak this afternoon with a 1-0 win over Brentford at home with the winner coming from Wilson with a penalty after 64 minutes.

While it certainly wasn’t pretty, the result in this game was more important than the performance, and our lads stuck to it to get our second win of the season.

Newcastle did not look good at all in the first half – but it was much better in the second, and this win will give our boys confidence going forward.

And 9 minutes of added time at the end was a little nerve-racking.

Indeed, in qn earlier game today, Spurs were losing 1-0 at home to Sheffield United before they scored two goals in the 20 minutes of added time to win 2-1 – what’s going on here?

We now have 6 points from 5 games – the same number of points as last season after 5 games.

And here is the photo we get with every win – the lads look very pleased!

🙂

Here are the video highlights of the game today from NBC Sports.

And in detail here is the penalty award that gave Newcastle all 3 points – dare I say this looks like a soft penalty for us?

But Callum has nerves of steel and it was an excellent penalty, under so much pressure.

And on merit Newcastle did deserve the points, but we were nowhere near our best.

Let us know who you think our Man of the Match was.

He was asked about how he felt when he heard Milan were willing to sell him, etc etc. He’s not fishing or pushing for anything. Just being as honest as he can, whilst trying to appease 2 sets of fans. I’m sure he found the whole move emotionally challenging, as his return will likely be. He mentioned feeling 10% of the emotion yesterday, but expected it to rise today.

I liked his answer about who his Dad will be supporting 🙂

Nothing off with the interview but kind of confirmed that the move is typical of modern football business, which is Dan Ashworth’s ‘trading’ bag. Tonali gave me the impression that the move to nufc very much like other young players looking to develop and show they can adapt before being elevated to a ‘Legacy’ club. ie. Bellingham

Dazzler, I remember that Nicky Butt performance, a complete disgrace, should have kicked his sorry arse out the club there and then. 😉

Unfortunately I’ll be pushing up daisies before we can get called a Legacy Club, will take several years of being at the top table, but I’m happy that at least I’m seeing the start of it and enjoying the ride so far.

Aye totally depends on what type of person he is and his mentality. Personally I think it would shake me up a bit. Loving a place, having to leave not through your own decision, returning and getting boo’d. I’d feel pretty down about it personally if I still loved the place but felt unwelcome now.

Players react to different things in their own ways I suppose.

I’m looking forward to seeing him play again regardless! Needs lots of game time with us and the players to get that understanding going. Be a hell of a player when he’s fully integrated and part of the Howe machine.

Seeing lots of headlines about us breaking rules by being late yesterday. Are there actually any implication to breaking the rules?

An Italian speaking Italian to a predominantly Italian press going out over Italian TV. I really don’t see a problem. 🙂

Eddie’s CL Bingo is going well, 17 entries so far. FOMO is a terrible affliction but it has a 100% cure here. https://www.nufcblog.com/2023/08/18/how-will-newcastle-fare-at-manchester-city-can-we-get-first-league-win-there-in-23-years/comment-page-2/#comment-2945131

Entries will close at 14:45 or a quarter to three in old money. Kick off is 17:45 thanks UEFA! 🙁

Regarding Tonali, he would not have signed if he did not want to play for us, IMO

    Bob,

Aye it was appalling – I worked as a waiter in the Bamburgh suite at the time (best job I ever had – paid to watch the match and eat a bang up scran) and people were less than impressed coming back in.

Few rumours on Twitter that a few fans were attacked and even stabbed last night in Milan.

Really hope that’s not true as spells trouble for the match before and after later on. Always seems to be trouble in Italy when fans travel over there for matches.

It’ll be interesting to see how he does with Longstaff in there. Bruno looked improved at the weekend, so I’m keen to see how Tonali does tonight.

Oh 100%, just feel like he would have preferred to stay at Milan if he had the choice. But was told he was being sold.

No doubt his commitment to us now and he’s going to be amazing for us. Just think if he was given the choice back then, he’d probably have preferred to stay at Milan.

Jamie Reubens interviewed on Talk Sport this morning stating the ambition and determination for the club to succeed at the highest level…

He made it clear they are looking to compete this season in the CL and not looking at it as a free hit … Hw went on to say that they are remaining calm and realistic about the slow start in the PL whilst having complete faith in EH and his team …
All in all a very measured and calm message that they intend to succeed despite whatever setbacks we face along the way ….

    Good stuff Jamie ….HWTL

Betty…Thanks for the share. Nothing surprising in there, but good to hear none the less.

Have found the questioning of Howe’s future to be nothing short of ridiculous. It’s clear how much the club value him and their mindset to date has simply been how do we help Eddie and the team in the best way possible. I don’t see that changing any time soon. HWTL!

Thank`s very much for sharing the Sandro Tonali interview with translation in english mate, very much appreciated. No doubt under the circumstance it`s going to be a really historic and emotional occasion for the lad!!! But he is the ultimate professional, and will strain every sinew to echieve a positive result for the Toon tonight, as will all the lads on the pitch tonight.

Good morning all on this CL day, it`s footin exciting, i know that much.

Ibizatoon, cheers for putting up that link for the U19s, i,ll watch it later

From what i watched of the Tonali interview i think he has a problem speaking and understanding English, understandable saying he is Italian but i`m wondering if his lack of understanding the language and instruction are hindering his performances so far.
Hope he has a stormer tonight.

He definitely spoke with passion and determination and seemed to have genuine empathy with the fans and the city….

Sandro has titanium nerves and one of the most focussed, professional attitudes i’ve seen…so to even suggest he’s gonna wuss out, in any way, shape or form, is both; an insult and says way more about the individual disseminating such bs.

Don’t think anyone has suggested Tonali would ‘wuss out’ mate.

Just that if he still has strong emotions towards Milan and get’s boo’d, it’s hard not to be a bit downhearted and effected by that, isn’t it?

Your hometown, place where your family live, that you consider home, making you feel unwelcome? Wouldn’t make anyone a wuss if that made them a feel a bit downbeat.

bettyswallocks @580 – I’ve always been impressed with Jamie Reubens – he comes across as quite measured and down to earth considering the privileged background that he comes from. I’m not sure if he is still doing it but last season he matched what ever they raised for the food bank at every home game.
