Newcastle ended their three-game losing streak this afternoon with a 1-0 win over Brentford at home with the winner coming from Wilson with a penalty after 64 minutes.
While it certainly wasn’t pretty, the result in this game was more important than the performance, and our lads stuck to it to get our second win of the season.
Newcastle did not look good at all in the first half – but it was much better in the second, and this win will give our boys confidence going forward.
And 9 minutes of added time at the end was a little nerve-racking.
Indeed, in qn earlier game today, Spurs were losing 1-0 at home to Sheffield United before they scored two goals in the 20 minutes of added time to win 2-1 – what’s going on here?
We now have 6 points from 5 games – the same number of points as last season after 5 games.
And here is the photo we get with every win – the lads look very pleased!
🙂
Here are the video highlights of the game today from NBC Sports.
And in detail here is the penalty award that gave Newcastle all 3 points – dare I say this looks like a soft penalty for us?
But Callum has nerves of steel and it was an excellent penalty, under so much pressure.
And on merit Newcastle did deserve the points, but we were nowhere near our best.
Let us know who you think our Man of the Match was.

Inter-Milan beat AC Milan 5-1 at home today – we play at AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Comment #83I really hope by the end of the season the club has a better system in place for tickets.
This new system is trial and error at the moment but it just doesn’t work for me so far.
Can’t believe there was big sections of empty seats when there are fans desperate to go.
Make it make sense

Comment #84Gotta win more ’round the box. Those 40/45yard diagonal one’s are pap!
What happened with the ‘new directive’ that said refs would blow less for gentle stroke fk’s? To let the game flow.
They just say stuff, then immediately forget, and do the opposite. It’s like the other half!
Living the nightmare!!!

Comment #85I don’t mind Tripps taking the free kicks but he never seems to have a pop at goal now. There were a couple yesterday just in the right position for an attempt on goal but he tried a clever flick or cross – this is obviously a planned tactic but seems a waste when he’s one of the best in the premiership at this!

Comment #86Little match review from the Leazes.
Atmosphere a touch below par especially first half. Crowd seems a touch different nowadays, clearly the ballot giving ‘fans’ that are first timers a chance to attend. Lots of folk not knowing where their seat is and getting up and down thousands of times during match.
Whinge over.
First half Eddie was being outwitted again by a system. First 20 minutes Brentford played between our lines really easy. We Eventually got a bit of ball and gave some threat through Bruno and Gordon. Wilson started dropping in a bit deeper to help build up play. Made a difference.
Second half a bit better, again Bruno, Gordon and Wilson standout forward thinking players. Centre halfs were mint as normal.
We are so lopsided as an attacking force due to BDB its a difficult watch at times. Sean fills gaps and works his socks off but is average on the ball. Below average yesterday. I long for young Hall to prove his worth.
Fortunately we hung on but Eddie should have brought on fresh legs last 20, Sean and Anderson were washed up. Bruno held us together.
Funny old game but they’re a funny owld team Brentford, would have beat us yesterday with Toney in their team.
We were actually pretty poor, really do miss little Joe and need to get Tonali into the team knowing his job sharpish. He is different levels to Anderson and Sean. Sean was shocking on the ball yesterday. We got away with one. Performance was miles away from Villa and the first 70 against the bindippers.

I noticed that after I submitted my post.
Great minds mate 😉
It’s how it’s always been tho hasn’t it? You have a bit of a wobble and a semi bad run and it’s just about getting a win at any means possible to break that voodoo. Being mentally drained is probably worse than being physically drained for me. Confidence is everything and we are a little devoid of that right now but we will get there again.

Comment #88Raj on sensible fire this morning with a number of posts. That’s what a win does for you!
Confidence is a big thing and hopefully this victory will build us some momentum. As Raj says, we got a gnarly win against Wolves post the Wembley defeat and it set us off on a long winning run.
The bingo proves that none of us have a listening bug in Eddie’s office!

Comment #90Our new seats are in the wings of the Millburn stand. Every week I’ve spotted at least half a dozen (maybe more) empty seats and some together. I’m not sure if this is ST holders who can’t make it not knowing how to transfer their tickets or the ballot system not working but either way it’s a shame!

Comment #91Raj – I said the same regarding Pope before the transfer window even opened. Pope is decent and he’s been a great buy for the money but I’d have loved to have seen a young keeper signed as I think we’ll need a truly top keeper to get the next level.
Obviously, there were other priorities in terms of the money available and a title challenge isn’t the plan just yet but I’m sure they have a few suitable targets on their list for succession planning.

Comment #92Brentford are a decent team, not on a footballing level, but well organized.
Couple that with yet another diabolical (awayer) ref performance, a changed midfield, a few nerves, any amount of media stoked fanbase introspection and that’s the kinda game we get.
😀
Glad that’s over!

Comment #97Forgot to add that yesterday was the first time in a ground that VAR and the ref detracted from the game. It was a farce at times.
How he came to the conclusion there was only 5 minutes to add on in that first half was baffling. Should have been twenty.
Took two minutes to get a corner in the box. Most stop start game ive ever witnessed.
VAR is shite.

Comment #101We suffered from comebacks a lot yesterday
As our rivals managed to find a way
To win after going a goal behind
It was enough to make you lose your mind
Spurs, City, Villa and Liverpool too
But thank the Lord, not Man U
At least we managed to stay in touch
By beating Brentford, but not by much
Even the Mackems staged a decent fight back
After the sending off of Ginger Jack
From one nil down, they then scored three
Which at least raised a cheer from EGB

Comment #106see Garang Kuol scored a belter yesterday for Volendam
Not sure if people are not waving the WOR flags or have a lot been nicked but seem a lot less being waved yesterday.
just watched MOM pen – not a pen
pen that was not given – was a pen
goal not given – was a goal
great three points but not a great display – something not clicking
also was the grass a tad long or over-watered the ball seemed to roll slower than normal when passes were made

What do you mean there was large gaps in the crowd, I never seemed to notice, you generally get them in the free booze areas where people are a bit slower coming out of their hospitality seats.

Comment #116Teams seem to have figured out how to negate our high press although it’s helped by every team we have played having a really good keeper who can play good passes not every team has that
I wonder if it was ever under consideration that we didn’t try to sign Raya from Brentford? He would’ve been ideal for that next level keeper

The tactical nous of PL managers is improving dramatically on an epic upward trajectory. Don’t know if you watched the four four two video last year about us not keeping as many clean sheets but it was a brilliant watch. Teams figured out our higher press and although we were still keeping the CS’ s we were failing to score, Eddie H tweaked it and invited teams further up the pitch, we inevitably leaked a few more but started scoring for fun. Unfortunately it led a few on here to blame our declining defence, it was nothing of the sort. Other managers and their backroom teams are spending a lot more time analysing us as they were in the first throes of the TO.

Comment #120Even if(when) Volendaam go down, I hope Kuol does enough to get himself a move to Feynoord where Minteh is looking like he’s excelling, I hope those two with their African roots are keeping in touch with each other.
