Comment #12Coming Home – oi! I’ll have you know I’ve won 3 and lost 3 in the H2H div 1.
I’m a solid mid table at the moment, 1 point of Taco in 5th but just 3 points clear of the relegation zone.

Comment #13Pretty good depth in central midfield actually. Could easily just have been the early season injuries to Longstaff and Willock forcing Eddie Howe to start Tonali from the off, rather than easing him in, that has suggested a problem. Probably in reality, in 3 out of a core 5 of Bruno, Longstaff, Joelinton, Willock, Tonali, with Anderson also very capable and also young Miley, then most probably, over the course of the season, we have the depth and quality to do very well, and the problem of a misfiring midfield is likely one that will be and perhaps already has been overcome. Toñali has needed a bit of time, and unfortunately for us, injuries have meant he couldn’t have it, but now we are better equipped, and will be further again, once Joel and Joe return.

Comment #21I needed a bit more evidence that Anderson was capable of starting for us in midfield and for us to win the midfield, and he delivered on Sunday certainly. Still not fully convinced though against better opposition, but he’s very much in the mix now for sure, so we are gonna find out, and I certainly hope he is the player we all hope he can be, and at only 20 there is clearly more to be mined from him.

Comment #23Coming Home – I had a shocking first few weeks but am gradually clawing my way back into it.
I often start slowly though. I don’t spend enough time analysing the best team during pre-season but I do pick things up as the season progresses. Same thing happened last season.

Comment #26When fit where is big joe gonna play and when is he due back
Last season we seemed to be one injury away from disaster we only added tonali and with Anderson playing well we seem to lots of options seems unfair to drop some.
Gordon seems.to have come of age over the summer
Felt sorry for Barnes as we know he is a good player when he is fit and up to speed will we see Barnes and Gordon line up together with miggy dropping out

Imo it wasn’t about that at all regarding HB, it was about us having a blip and fingers had to be pointed and blame apportioned, look what HB has helped AG turn in to, plus we’re only a few games in and the left is almost wiped out unless we start risking Issk over there. I think we might see Lewis Hall further up the pitch against Man City.

I am pacing myself this season.
On your other point, some fans react quickly as you know. To me it is a question of priorities now.
As I posted previously I would totally deprioritise the Carabao at this stage.
Given the injuries we have now and the amounts of game time some players have had due to an unusual season thanks to the winter WC and then U21 tournaments for players like Tonali and Gordon in summer it makes no sense to me to go all out on the Carabao cup.
There is no money in it and while a trophy would be lovely it should not be the priority in this season.

It might not be a bad thing for Hall to play in a more offensive role as that side of the game seems to come naturally to him
Whereas it can take a while to learn the defensive side

I’m not sure HB has helped AG in any way at all I think AG has got himself so fit and knows his ability and doesn’t matter who his competition is he just grafts hard

Comment #34I suspect that Joelinton returns to the side on the left, when fit, with Longstaff on the right, and Bruno central, and then of course you have rotation and the full use of the bench, but to me, right now, that is still our preferred midfield 3 if all fit, to start big games.

Comment #35Taco – I want a trophy and I think many fans think the same. Wouldn’t be right in my opinion to deprioritise a competition where there’s a potential trophy at the end of it.

My suggested team has Hall playing left side of a midfield 3 vs Citeh for that exact reason that you just described (and cos he can play there)
Saying we didn’t need Barnes always seemed silly to me, especially after Maxi was sold and due to the fact that we don’t have a 3rd striker.
Players get injured and no-one can play every game in a CL season.
Our options now say it all. Why risk key players in the first round of a cup that quite frankly we are unlikely to win overall? Especially a cup where most of the games are played in this half of the season?
Ultimately all smart teams (even those with more established and deeper squads than ours) look at the wider picture and focus on Europe and the PL in this half of the season.
Ooooo........it's Nicky the ball tosser
Sep 25, 2023 at 9:39 PM
Comment #38Surely Barnes was simply brought in to give us added depth and quality in wide attacking areas. It’s great for us if a player of that quality is kept out of the 11 because of the form of others. I do like the idea of Barnes on the left and Gordon on the right though. That might yet really fire.

I would love a trophy too and I think they will come. But no top team that has Europe to focus on plays their best players in the early rounds of the Carabao unless it was a local derby and even then they often don’t.

Eight different goalscorers, a trio of Kieran Trippier assists, Newcastle’s biggest win in 24 years; records tumbled at Bramall Lane and yet, for all of the visitors’ ruthless excellence, the headline was Sheffield United’s sheer incompetence in almost every facet. Callum Wilson politely proclaimed: “We knew it was going to be a difficult game.”
