There’s an exclusive being reported today by Football Insider that Newcastle United are interested in signing Eveton’s 21-year-old center-back Jarrad Branthwaite, who has been capped 4 times by the England U21 side.
The Carlisle-born youngster, who stands 6ft 5ins tall (it must be those hamburgers) has been in fine form for the Toffees this season and looks an excellent defender in the making.
The player started his career at his hometown club Carlisle United (14 games, one goal) before moving to Everton in 2022 and since then has played 25 times for the Toffees with one goal.
He did get playing time on loan at Blackburn (10 games) and PSV last season (36 games – 4 goals)) so he has played 86 games with 7 goals in total.
His contract runs through June 2027, so it will be interesting to see how much Everton want for him in January – if indeed they are willing to sell him at all – but money talks.
Football Insider are reporting that Eddie Howe is a big fan of the center-back.
It looks like the season on loan at PSV last season, where he was a regular starter, did the lad a lot of good.
He has quickly cemented his place in Everton’s starting lineup and has looked solid in the games we have watched.
Football Insider reports that we have been looking for a long-term successor to Fabian Schar, but Branthwaite is left-footed?
However the 21-year-old does have pace, and that’s something that’s missing in our central defense at the moment.
The Football Insiders report that “Howe is eager to do the deal in January, but such an agreement will only be possible if the structure of the transfer is right.”
This is the exact type of young player we should be going after – someone who has shown definite early promise.
And Eddie Howe and his coaching team can make him into a powerful England International defender at Newcastle in a year or two.
Certainly, his physical stature is there, and he’s shown he’s a tough defender at the Toffees.
He would fit right into Newcastle’s defense.
And even Alan Shearer thinks he’s a great prospect, as he had this to say recently on the Premier League website after Everton beat West Ham 1-0 on 29th October:
“Magnificent at the back. Nothing got past him against West Ham.”
What do you think about this?
Comments welcome.
Blog Note:
I have had a number of messages from readers recently complaining about other readers putting out dubious comments. Can you please try to handle these yourselves – I just don’t have the energy or strength to do this, and Neil is no longer involved with the blog – I hope you understand – thanks for your help on this.

Comment #83Jail, Yes I speak to Luke E. about once a week on the school run…., he does have a good relationship with Eddie, they seem to get on well with their question & answer sessions. He just updates me on injuries or chats about when he was at Dortmund etc…, no real exclusives as yet, I,ll be asking him about recruitment for January shortly, see what he says. Cheers. GWH

Comment #84My God after all these years Lesh submits a post about football – just as the blog is probably going to end.
I suspect this was just an “obligatory” post about footy which he will think that he now has a free hand to post extracts from Mao’s little red book and even more leftoid rubbish.

Comment #86Ledge I saw that trans comment. Pathetic.
I read before that the England female sea angling team voted to have a trans excluded from their team. An interesting position to take and brave, considering the type of pressure they wud have come under to conform.

That relates to my point, and it is why teams will vote for it. 3 or 4 years ago NUFC would have voted for it because it was of no clear and immediate benefit for us not to.
However as we are both saying what it does not is limit the flexibility of all other teams in future too and we will be successful anyway so some will likely come to regret some of these decisions. The more they change the rule the more they box themselves into a corner.
Ask yourself which way Man U would vote if that Sheikh had bought the whole club? But he didn’t so they will vote for it.
As for players from Saudi I am not to fussed, there aren’t any I really want anyway I and think that was more a media story than something that was going to happen anyway.
It is easy for a journo to write PIF own NUFC and PIF own 4 Saudi clubs who bought European players ergo these clubs will loan players to NUFC. Doesn’t mean that was actually going to happen though. It that was the plan the Saudi teams would have bought more better players.

I seem to remember, even before that documentary, one of the owners saying that we had some big, non saudi sponsorship offers

Comment #93It was a nasty interpretation of what I said, and incorrect, and you did it to get people slagging me off. Poor form but typical, and that’s why I got annoyed.

Comment #94Although it would be good for Gordon and Longstaff to be selected, I’m also glad that they weren’t so that they can have a break and reduce the risk of injury at this time.

While it is great for players to get that recognition it doesn’t help NUFC and compared to NUFC I don’t give crap about the England team.
Also, while I rate Longstaff and have done for a long time I am not sure a call up would be good for him. It took a while for many of our own fans to appreciate what he brings to the team so imagine what fans of other teams would be like?
He could have great games for England and put in “the hard yards” as they say, but many people won’t appreciate that and he is hardly a prolific scorer so he would probably get slated by many fans and the media.
