This South American Midfielder May Be A Good Acquisition For Newcastle In January

Since Sandro Tanali was banned from playing for Newcastle for 10 months, we have covered several potential central midfield signings to replace since then – loan or permanent.

But one we haven’t covered is Atalanta’s 24-year-old Brazilian U20 midfielder Ederson, as a potential replacement for Sandro Tonali.

TuttoMercatoWeb have now reported that Newcastle are indeed interested in Ederson.

We know we have to bring in at least one central midfielder to cope with the absence of Sandro Tonali but we would like to see it be a long-term deal as well as filling in for Tonali for this season.

Here is a translation of some of the Tuttomercatoweb article:

“Newcastle are after Ederson and for Atalanta, the valuation is (at least) €40M (note – that’s about £35M).”

“The Brazilian’s excellent performances have attracted the attention of some big clubs. In particular, there is Newcastle, orphaned by Tonali, who are very interested in signing him”

“Atalanta, after all, paid around €15M for him plus Lovato’s price tag, valued at €11M (€26M in total).”

“Therefore, it is also difficult to think that, after a good period, the Nerazzurri might not want to make money from it.”

“In January, unless there are crazy offers, Ederson will not leave.”

Ederson has played 53 times for Atalanta with 6 goals and 2 assists and he has a single cap for the Brazil U20 side.

So if the Newcastle hierarchy think that Ederson is the right central midfield player to come in during January, we can get him for around £35M, and probably less than that.

We are sure Sporting Director Dan Ashworth and his team have been doing their homework, as to which player would be the best acquisition in January to replace Tonali.

But as well as bringing in a central midfielder to plug the gap caused by Sandro Tonali’s ban, we will need at least three more players.

Our injuries have reached a crisis point, and we hope to get maybe 3 players back before the Chelsea game at home on November 25th.

What do you think?

Check.. agree, too much emphasis is being out on effort by fans and not technical ability .. EH wants both, we give far too many balls away with stray passed – we’ll get there – just takes time to buy those players under ffp

You asked me a question about player amortisation a day or so ago. If we bought a player for £50m in a 5 year contract and we offered them a new longer term contract at the end of year 4. I don’t know for sure but in my view the remaining £10m on the books would be written off over the term of the new contract. Would obviously help FFP but you’d also have the likely increase in their salary to factor in.

From a tax perspective or an ffp perspective the 10 million would still be relevant

    Onmeedsun,

Thanks for your reply. That makes sense. I assumed it would be something along those lines but it seems neither of us can be sure when it comes to details like that.

It must be similar to how we described overall though I would think.

    Dr Gloom,

So the remaining £10 gets amortised again over the length of the new contract? As would any “signing on fee”?

So any new contract gets amortised again essentially?

Wages would of course count from an FFP point of view and you cant amortise wages.

Pif only has shares in 4 Saudi teams. There are other Saudi teams with decent players I think that are not linked with pif.

Can we get them players instead?

As I’ve said before, and was somehow slagged for it, Keegan’s philosophy is right. You upgrade with signings. You push the lesser players onto the bench with upgrades

Good few of us in the same mould as yourself, except I can’t sing.
We’ve an amazing collie b/w of course , rescued as a pup from Dogs Trust after we’d said goodbye to a wonderful tri coloured lad who we took in as a rescue when he was 8.
Like my whisky. Love being part of our amazing club. Tend to wear my heart on my sleeve.

I don’t know what all the crap was that was floating around before and causing angst but not worth wasting energy on, just let it go as they say these days. Their loss. Rest of us have better things to focus on.
    Now where’s that single malt.

The Downbeat a den of iniquity? It didn’t seem so when the place was jumping and a young Mr Burdon, wearing his US army helmet, had the place jumping. No drink on sale….. unless you had half a crown for a bottle of brown that appeared from under the counter!

And, the owner, kind as he was, would allow those of us who couldn’t get home, to doss down on the fag-end littered floor, using coats as covers.

The Downbeat set the standard for luxury….. is.

    Munster,
KK is from a different era where a big squad wasn’t as much a thing, having a player come in to send another player to the bench doesn’t work like that anymore. Look at some other signings from our competitors, I won’t use Havertz as he’s been a flop, so Arsenal signed Trossard last season, not an upgrade on Martinelli but has pushed him to much better performances and can play together. Villa and Tielemans, not an upgrade on McGinn but is a very useful squad player trying to get in the team. Doku isn’t an upgrade on Grealish or Foden but is pushing to displace the pair of them, there are loads of instances, you need to improve a whole squad, it’s not as black or white as saying you can’t buy any more players because they’re not better than ones we’ve got, let’s say Isak is one of the best young strikers in the world, do we just not buy Wilson’s replacement because he’s not better than Isak, we could be waiting years.

Targett for example probably isn’t at the level we need so you’re not going to go and sign Tyric Mitchell or Mkylenko, however we’ve looked in Hall to sign a player who they think will be as good as Robertson or Cancelo. Harvey Barnes might not be better than Barnes but is is good enough to dispel him if there’s a lack of form, injuries or suspension.
