Since Sandro Tanali was banned from playing for Newcastle for 10 months, we have covered several potential central midfield signings to replace since then – loan or permanent.
But one we haven’t covered is Atalanta’s 24-year-old Brazilian U20 midfielder Ederson, as a potential replacement for Sandro Tonali.
TuttoMercatoWeb have now reported that Newcastle are indeed interested in Ederson.
We know we have to bring in at least one central midfielder to cope with the absence of Sandro Tonali but we would like to see it be a long-term deal as well as filling in for Tonali for this season.
Here is a translation of some of the Tuttomercatoweb article:
“Newcastle are after Ederson and for Atalanta, the valuation is (at least) €40M (note – that’s about £35M).”
“The Brazilian’s excellent performances have attracted the attention of some big clubs. In particular, there is Newcastle, orphaned by Tonali, who are very interested in signing him”
“Atalanta, after all, paid around €15M for him plus Lovato’s price tag, valued at €11M (€26M in total).”
“Therefore, it is also difficult to think that, after a good period, the Nerazzurri might not want to make money from it.”
“In January, unless there are crazy offers, Ederson will not leave.”
Ederson has played 53 times for Atalanta with 6 goals and 2 assists and he has a single cap for the Brazil U20 side.
So if the Newcastle hierarchy think that Ederson is the right central midfield player to come in during January, we can get him for around £35M, and probably less than that.
We are sure Sporting Director Dan Ashworth and his team have been doing their homework, as to which player would be the best acquisition in January to replace Tonali.
But as well as bringing in a central midfielder to plug the gap caused by Sandro Tonali’s ban, we will need at least three more players.
Our injuries have reached a crisis point, and we hope to get maybe 3 players back before the Chelsea game at home on November 25th.
What do you think?

The Casablanca club was on Bath Lane, but i think most will remember as Bloomers or Change Is, and that Bob Monkhouse owned it,
Formerly the Casablanca, located in Bath Lane, this club was owned by comedian Bob Monkhouse and later became Bloomers.

Comment #48I don’t agree, we replace individuals with higher quality. Sometimes we will need good young guys pushing upwards, but to take on the big boys we will need three or four 50mill signings, to make a serious dent. These guys will move three or four of our lesser guys to the bench and improve the unit noticeably.

Comment #52Replacing players in a squad needs done very carefully as to not upset the harmony of a very close knit and united group of players. If not done correctly it can easily cause divides in the dressing room, with individuals who are not team players but, individuals just like a man u dressing room…
Eddie is clearly well aware of this and chooses to sign players who will fit effortlessly in with the current ethos. Eddie is remarkably carful not to just dump players like a bad habit if they’ve had a bad game etc, but instead work very closely with them to ensure that they become the very very best that they can be, doing this with players who were so badly mismanaged for so long previously, has resulted in your very average player(s) are punching well above their weight and would do absolutely anything to succeed which is a fantastic ingredient to have to battle for results on the field of play.
Eddie has had that squad of players playing unbelievably well and if it were not for the really unfortunate injuries that have piled up (no fault of Eddies training regime, just terrible bad luck) or Tonali’s ban we’d be sitting much better in the league of EPL and UCL. On that note the injuries will subside, Eddie will hopefully bring in 3 or 4 top reinforcements in the January transfer window and I believe that we will see a strong finish to tbe second half of this season. I can see us getting a top 5 finish and UCL football for next season. Keep the faith in our players people, they deserve so much credit the lot of them (they’ve all done their part in our success) and when Eddie does look to strengthen certain positions, it will be done his way and a strategic one and as mentioned above, not to upset the harmony of the dressing room which is critical to how wor team play and battle. We will be reet all clubs have injury crisis’s, it’s how the injuries are handled and managed and what the club do to improve the squad depth piece by piece to combat the injuries in the future. Part of the continuous improvement NUFC are working towards.

Every signing we’ve made has improved the team, you could argue Tonali didn’t but he was settling in and imo would have/will turn in to an excellent acquisition.

Comment #54Erm first what we need to do is replace Matt Ritchie, Manquillo and Emil Krafth with higher quality and get a good balance to the squad.
Then we can look at upgrading starting 11 and sending some to Bench.
Main Starting 11 is pretty much
Pope
Trip schar botman burn
Longy Bruno joelinton
Almiron isak gordon
Second
Dubs
Livra lascelles Dummet Targett
Tonali Willock
Murphy Wilson Barnes
In terms of squad the second is missing a midfielder so need a body there. Anderson is left attack for me not midfield.
So that’s Rithie manquillo and kraft that can be easily upgraded. Dummer aswell. Sell Targett and give Hall his spot.
Replace ritchie with a cf. Manquillo for a cdm. Kraft for a younger cb. Squad starts to look better balanced compared to now.

Comment #57NUFC have had a near perfect transfer signings IMO. All those that were ready to pounce on NUFC where we were buying the league, were left clamped and had to eat humble pie.
NUFC have not made one bad signing yet IMO. Tonali will come good next season, I’m convinced he will repay our faith in him 3 fold. I’m very interested as to who we do bring in this January and what positions. Whoever they do decide to sign will make us better and stronger and the signings will be well fought out. NUFC certainly don’t do knee jerk reactions that’s for sure. They’re meticulous in everything they do.

Comment #60There are reports that IFAB are considering 10 minute sin bin trials for dissent. They’ve already trialled it in grass roots football.
Could be a good thing if it cuts down dissent but it would have to be done consistently which doesn’t always seem to be the case with yellow cards at the moment.

Time plays tricks on us and recalls never easy when memories of clubs are clouded by the drink thar was consumed when in such places.
We could discuss which clubs were where until the cows come home so rather than take up precious time, here’s an article that might help put the clubs jig-saw pieces together:

Comment #63Too many people writing KP off, because he hasn’t hit the ground running yet with Citeh. Although, KP still gets picked for England and has put some handy displays in whilst playing for England.
IMO a good player doesn’t become a bad player, it’s just that they’re being played out of position or their confidence has dropped or both. A good manager gets the very best out of a player and Eddie is just the right manager to get KP firing on all cylinders again. Eddie will have a job on his hands to get KP Eddie Howe fit, but I’m sure he would succeed and get the lad back to his very best. I’d love us to go in on KP with an option to buy after a loan period.

Comment #67Adam – I think he’s been warned mate. A shot across the bows to tell him he’s got to move in January if he doesn’t force his way in at Man City. My suspicion is that he’s only in the England team because he will be moving clubs in January.

Should be out of the England squad and he can earn his place back with consistent good performances at club level in my opinion. Be that at Man City, Newcastle or any other club he may move to.
Keeping him in on the guess he’ll move in January and consistently play well would be barmy.

Comment #71Can’t remember who posted about it last night, but think there was some chat about us needing better players and some in the squad aren’t up to it etc.
Not sure where this is coming from.
Better start this season than last season.
Have an insane amount of injuries so team is working harder and is weaker.
This squad has already beaten PSG, Man City, Arsenal, Manure and drew at the San Siro against Milan. So this squad absolutely can hang with the ‘big teams’ and even beat them.
We are in the Champions League a year after being called certs for relegation.
This squad is absolutely fine. A bad game here and there happens to any team.
We’re very obviously going to continue to improve the squad when we can and with the right players. But it’s a bit insulting to say many in the team aren’t good enough to take us to the next level. They already have, are doing better than last season so far and that’s with a depleted squad.
What more can they be doing right now??

A sin bin is a good plan, imv. Been talking it up for years. Creates a ‘power play’ situation, like hockey. A suitable handicap for the offending team.
Maybe would teach a few consistent offenders to can it?
Plus, if a group surrounded the ref, say, they feel they can sanction several players at once and not wuss out… Altho’, that didn’t stop the ref carding 3 if ours, but not arse players!!! Consistency is absolutely required here, otherwise questions need answering, yet again.
Why one team is sanctioned, and not the other, for the same offence?
Particularly when we were the ‘injured’ party!?!

Comment #74Lesh, that’s not the Newcastle club scene I remember, I was already married and had 1st kid before that lot.
My club scene was late 60’s early 70’s and apart from classics like “the original Downbeat Club”, & Club Agogo, included the newer Bailey Clubs of Dolce Vita & Greys Club in Newcastle, The Latino, Chelsea Cat, Beach Club + 2 others I can’t remember names of in South Shields. Me and my mates used to go down to South Shields every Friday Night and stay in Newcastle on Saturdays. Happy, drunken days! 🙂

That’s one of the examples I was thinking of where there was inconsistency but it has other times too. They also mentioned just allowing the captain to approach the referee.

There’s been all kinds of finger pointing and hindsight merchant-ing, there’s nothing wrong with tactics, formations, pressing this or pressing that, we’ve been demolishing teams. The problems we’re having at the moment relates directly to an unprecedented and freakish injury list, it’s as simple as that.

Comment #80Adam – I know I’ve said it before but I think it’s very old fashioned thinking that a player has to be in great form for their club to be selected for their national team. In the past, that was the only way of knowing if they were match fit and their head was in the right place but these days they have all sorts of tests and metrics to make sure they are physically and mentally ready to play.
We’ve seen players like Dummett & Lascelles come in from the cold and play well for us so why should Phillips be different for England?
