Some additional bad news on Newcaste’s injury front today.
We already have 10 first-team players injured and the Telegraph (Luke Edwards) is now reporting that Callum Wilson’s hamstring injury could keep him out of the side for 6 weeks – that’s until the end of the year, and we still have 10 games to play.
And Sven Botman’s knee injury has not responded to treatment, and that could mean an operation is needed which will keep him out an additional 3 months.
He picked up his knee in jury was back in August.
This is not good news for Newcastle.
EXCLUSIVE – Wilson out at least six weeks and Botman may be longer as Newcastle's injury crisis deepens #nufc https://t.co/dpKlbVnD1e
— Luke Edwards (@LukeEdwardsTele) November 15, 2023
And something we haven’t heard before is that Newcastle talisman Sean Longstaff has a swollen ankle, and is now a doubt for our next game at home to Chelsea on Saturday, November 25th.
We do know that Alexander Isak should be fit for our next game and that Harvey Baranes is close to be able o play for Newcastle again.
The other good news is that Almiron only has a grade one tear of his right hamstring, so that should take two to three weeks to heal.
But the 10 games we have until the end of the year could negatively affect both our League Cup and Premier League situation.
We’re quite sure the owners are working to bring in new players – hopefully early in January – and we need around four players who can come in and produce the goods very quickly at Newcastle.
It’s much like the situation two years ago when we were fighting relegation.
Now we are trying to win the League (Carabao) Cup and finish in the top four in the Premier Leage, for the second season running.
But this is not good news today.

Comment #81I think we were actively looking for another striker in the summer gone. Other positions took priority and the budget was spent on them so one wasn’t brought in. Wilson missed chunks of last season and was badly out of form around this time last year. So the warning signs were there. Wilson does have a good goal ratio but how much longer can he maintain it for.

Comment #88When Brucey was in charge the injuries were down to bad coaching, now they are all down to bad luck. Really think we need to have a serious look at what they are doing in training. If this continues then Howe has to go.

Comment #92This whole āWilsonās got a good goal ratioā is the single biggest problem when we all absorb and thrive on stats.
A goal ratio is based on goals per minute. Which undoubtedly is terrific but misses the obvious bitā¦ā¦ his overall number of minutes on the pitch!
He could have the best goal ration in the world, but thatās useless if you canāt get him on the ***ing pitch in the first place!
Imagine a worst case scenarioā¦A striker starts 1st game of season, scores a worldy but is crocked badly in 1st 20mins and is subbed.
His goal ratio looks great for the rest of the season, he tops all the stats āa goal every 20minsā, but in reality heās crocked and misses the whole season – not a lot of use then!!
Thatās the Wilson dilemma – heās not available for enough time per season to be of any long term value. We got 2 x great little runs out of him last season, weāve had a sporadic availability so far this time.
Iām in the āwe need a strikerā camp, Wilson should be sold to help finance deal or have to settle for 3rd choice and occasional run outs when available.

Comment #93Bill’s son, that the point. They aren’t bad luck, they are down to bad coaching and bad management. Overplaying players that are carrying knocks and need a rest. He has spent Ā£400 million yet he picks the same 11 players every week.

Comment #97I’m not trying to make the case that Wilson isn’t somewhat injury prone and that we couldn’t do with a more reliable option, however, I do think it’s being blown a bit out of proportion, due to the overall injury crisis at present.
Last season Wilson played in 31 PL games, 10 as a sub. Along with 5 starts in the ELC. What’s that, 7 games he wasn’t involved in?
This season, after 12 games played in the PL, he’s managed 10 games, 5 as a sub. He’s also played in 4 cup games, twice as a sub.
Stats taken from https://www.premierleague.com/players/8454/Callum-Wilson/overview
Again, not saying it isn’t a problem and this isn’t a goal scoring per minutes argument, just some perspective.
Saying all of that, wasn’t it when fans started doubting him after the WC that he then went on a “I’ll show you” rampage, shooting us into CL?

It’s notice he’s being overplayed either, that injury he got against Man U a couple of seasons ago that forced is to buy Wood, I don’t even think he’d played the game before, his minutes have been managed really well, he hardly played at all at the WC before getting yet another injury.

Comment #104Ibiza, thatās similar to what I was saying about how we absorb and use Stats.
To say he played in 31 x games last season isnāt strictly true.
He started in 21 x games and was a sub in a further 10 is more honest.
It doesnāt allow for how many of those 21 he was subbed and at what point?
This Season heās started 5 out of 12 & been a sub a further 5, not enough for a principle striker which Iām sure is how he sees himself. If itās true heās missing the next 6 x weeks thatās a huge chunk of games heās not available, again!
There is a problem, and I agree we all need perspective, but reliance on stats that can be read or interpreted in more than one way isnāt where weāll get perspective from, which was kinda my point. š

Comment #107Bob…I didn’t just say that though and what you said is exactly the same thing š
Agree with you about needing deeper info about sub times etc. Anyway, really not arguing the overriding point and as I alluded to, it’s possible the online doubt may well motivate him into a goal scoring frenzy. You know, whilst the new striker finds his feet.
I have been in the camp that have felt we could use a 3rd striker anyway. Not that the club made a mistake, i get their thinking, but it is a position which needed looking at, no doubt.

I was in the āwe need a young back up strikerā camp last January and Summer.
We gambled due to FFP and unfortunately lost.
The situations got worse, so we need an āoven readyā striker, not a prospect. Wilson, unless heās sold has to drop to 3rd choice.

Comment #113Ibiza, I get your ācould go on goal frenzyā, but for that to work he needs to be fit for x number of games and by all accounts thatās not going to be until after Xmas at earliest.

Comment #114Some boring quick and probably not accurate maths incoming:
Wilson last season played a total of 1,885 minutes in the league. So if we say 38 games a season in the league at 90 minutes, that’s a rough total of 3,420 minutes. So take away Wilsons minutes and that’s a difference of 1,535 minutes. So he was actually close to playing as many minutes, as he missed minutes. Which isn’t as impressive reading as saying he was in 31 matches.
This season so far he has played 482 minutes in the league and there’s been 12 games. So 1,080 minutes, of which Wilson has played 482 means he’s missed 598 minutes. Again not great.
I know this is super simplistic as they aren’t all injury related, sometimes Isak is just preferred. But thought it was interesting anyway!
For another basic example, Haaland played 2777 minutes in the league last season, meaning he missed 643 minutes. Equivalent of 7 games missed.
Wilsons last season was the equivalent of 17 games missed.

Comment #116Oh sorry, plus if we use the same simple maths for this season. Wilsons minutes played compared to total matches played in the league so far, it means Wilson has missed 6.6 games already. Nearly the same amount as last season.
(I know they aren’t all injury related, but it’s safe to assume he is rested and rotated a lot because of his injury record, so think it can still be correlated as an injury related/concern absence)
