Report – Newcastle Have Decided On Our Number One Transfer Target In January

We have been linked with this player before Sandro Tonalia was banned until late next August from playing for Newcastle, because of his illegal betting.

And now a report in the Northern Echo suggests that Newcastle will indeed go after Manchester City’s 27-year-old England International Kalvin Phillips in January.

And it could even be a permanent deal – or a loan with an obligation to buy next summer, to help with the FFP rules.

Recently Pep Guardiola made statements – as follows – that he was not scared to sell Phillips to a Premier League rival like Newcastle.

“Would I stop a player from joining a rival? Never, ever,”

“I give my opinion to the club, and they decide if the transfer suits both sides and the player. Why? I think blocking a move means you are a small club.”

“Big clubs, they don’t care, they make decisions for the benefit of all three parties – players and both clubs and agents sometimes.”

“Really, it is not a problem. They want to go to Chelsea, United, Liverpool whoever. What is the problem?”

“They are happy to be there, the club is happy with the transfer, and the other club is happy with the amount of money they spend.”

“It’s fine.”

The number one priority at Newcastle in January is to bring in a central midfielder and it now looks like the number one candidate is Phillips.

News today that Elliott Anderson may be out longer than anticipated with his back in jury and well into next year before he can return – it seems his back injury is long term.

And at the moment we have 10 first-teamers injured with about half of them being long-term.

And Phillips has also been told by England manager Gareth Southgate that he must play more games if he is to make the England squad for Euro 2024 in Germany next year.

It also appears the lad seems very keen to get on the Newcastle train – destined for greatness over the next several years, under the new owners.

Phillips has not started one league game this season for City – so he’s really out in the cold in Manchester.

We have to hope that Dan Ashworth and his staff can bring Phillips in early in January, because he has a job to do at Newcastle with Tonali out for the season and Anderson out long term.

Manchester City have put a price of £50M on him but they only paid £42M to Leeds on a six-year contract in July of last year: we are sure a decent deal can be agreed with City.

We hope a decent deal can be agreed with City.

🙂

Adam – I just don’t understand why you’re placing a greater importance on Phillips’ club form rather than his understanding of England’s tactics, his familiarity with the other England players, and his ability to stay fully fit.

Aye, the difference between Lascelles and Dummet is they’re being played due to rotation or injuries, GS has the whole English database to choose from.

    TDSarf,
Because he’s not playing regularly his standards simply can’t be attuned as to someone who is, it’s also sending out the wrong message imo, that it doesn’t matter if you’re playing or not, once you’re in my club you’re in for good.

Add to that, that when KP came on against us in the league cup, he looked way off the pace and made manc actually worse, imv.

The crucial point, imv, about GS and KP is that GS stated, publicly, that he would and does pick players who are playing for their club, consistently!
Which is patently not true, regarding both KP and HM.
He created this problem and it’s trashing his ‘legacy’.

Because if national teams were picked under those guidelines, it’d be the same team every game until all the players retire. By your reasoning we should never call up someone who hasn’t played for England before as they don’t know the tactics or gel with other players.

    That’s insane.

Phillips is out of form for club and country and not playing regularly. The only argument for him being in the England team is he has sometimes played well for England in the past. That is ridiculous reasoning and makes it a total closed shop where we should just continually pick the same players and never look to improve.

Been reading about the FA letter to Arteta/Arsenal. If arsenal did reply to the FA on Monday, then the FA should decide by tomorrow whether to charge them.

But it’s not true. Sterling has been dropped by Southgate and TAA has been dropped before too. Some people get upset that Phillips, Maguire, and Henderson get selected and oddly there are people getting upset that Sterling didn’t get selected this time around despite him not being in top form.

Same can be said for someone like Rashford.

Played well for England in the past, but this season is being outperformed by Gordon in stats and ratings.

    Yet Rashford gets picked.

In this example, Gordon also won player of the tournament for England under 21s. England teams are supposedly being taught the same way to have a style of play go right through the England ranks.

In that case Gordon should already be aware of England tactics then.

What more can a player do? Win a tournament award for the under 21 team, play and perform consistently at a high level. Have better stats than others in your position. Yet don’t get picked.

    Logically makes no sense.

The truth of the matter is that GS is just a poor manger. We could have won Europe already and be on our way to win another if he picked a proper team. Until he is replaced it will be the same old.

Viktor Gyokeres’ record at Sporting Lisbon since leaving Coventry in the summer:

    – 14 appearances
    – 12 goals
    – 4 assists

I mentioned a few times we should have gone in for him as a 3rd striker as NUFC were definitely monitoring him last season with his breakthrough season with Coventry. Looks a real talent with huge potential.

Adam – you’ve jumped to the opposite in exaggerating my opinion. It’s also far too simplistic to think that club form is the overriding selection criteria, there are many other factors. I’m sure that club form is one of the factors that Southgate considers but I don’t see why it has to be the overriding one. It just seems to be the one that fans get hung up on because it’s the one they understand the most. Obviously fans don’t have access to the fitness stats, they also typically can’t grasp the nuances of tactics at the professional level, and they certainly some understand the dynamics within the squad.

Apparently Arsenal want Ruben Neves this January. That would be a great shame as I’d love him to sign for us but it looks like that will be blocked so one of the self entitled lot can sneak in and sign him.

Aye they’re all running scared of us but these tactics getting deployed to attempt to slow us down are an absolute joke and an embarrassment. I can’t wait to overtake all these so called elite clubs.

I’m not sure if you’d want a midfielder consisting of three Brazilians and I’ve a hunch one of the reasons we weren’t actually in for Paqueta despite the links (real or made up). Imagine a Brazil WCQ on a Thursday and a PL game on Saturday, three MF’s missing is a big gap to fill.

Southgate is a weak weak manager.

Like Bruce only plays tried and tested so if things fail it’s not his fault.

Has no interest in new ideas or developing the squad. It’s all about the here and now.

Philips aint worth it. (but not my call)

We need a third option striker.

(Have done probably since Isaks injury last season)

Just strikers are very costly and many don’t work out. So I do get the clubs problem on what they want and whom is available.

Southgate is soo uninspiring, the magnolia manager….

    TaoF,
If you’re as regular reader as you are poster you’ll have seen me make an ar$e of myself with my Wilson comments,. I say we need to get shot of him and he returns from injury in blistering form and a flurry of goals, but I’ll put my head on the block again and say it’s time to drop him to the third striker role not bring in someone with the quality you’d expect from a player that carries the title of ‘third striker’. We need to find a striker with an injury record like Watkins, in fact a player like Watkins who is also a RW is ideal. Bowen too. It’s no good relying on Wilson to carry us through seasons. Not sure what the craic is with Isak, his injury record isn’t great but it’s not terrible either, I think he’s just been unlucky since arriving in the PL.

Can’t believe we still have folks on here bigging up Gareth bloody Southgate.

Let’s put it this way. What club in the EPL would have him managing their club? I’d say maybe the likes of Luton may potentially. GS is NOT even an average manager and has not taken the best group of players we’ve had since the England team of 66’ forward. He has hamstrung the team with his very boring and defensive tactics. He is a dinosaur manager and I feel for the players from well managed clubs like Man City and NUFC to have to then play under GS. The quicker this dinosaur goes the better as at present watching England is an absolute bore fest.

I’m not saying club form is the over-riding thing, I made multiple points when you made the Dummett and Lascelles comparison.

Simple fact is, he isn’t playing, has been shite when he has played, is sometimes ok for England and sometimes not and his most recent England performance, was hugely slated as being unfit and rusty due to playing time at club level.

If you think it makes sense to pick a player who isn’t playing regularly, is bad when they do play and is now not even playing that well for England anyway, then I don’t know what else will make you see how that makes no sense at all.

We are going in circles like I said we would earlier, so that’s enough from me on it now as I fear i’ll bore other readers.

Wilson should be third choice striker absolutely. We shud bring in a worldy in Jan. Callum cannot complain, spends a third of the season out every year.

Availability is a key ability. Good servent but not to be relied upon injuries wise unfortunately.

Bring Toney in and be done with it. Him and Isak will be unreal.

If NUFC want a top back up striker to Isak then go for his fellow countryman Viktor Gyokeres. I’ve posted above his stats this season for Sporing Lisbon, apparently great mates with Isak and still only 24 and wouldn’t cost a fortune. Wilson should be made 3rd striker as this is the only way his fitness and injuries can be managed correctly.

My preference would be a modern ‘versatile’ striker.

Given how injuries can ruin a season (like ours right now) I think that it’s better to have versatile players than positional specialists (except in goal) 😀

Someone who is a natural striker but can play across the front line and even AM if required is worth their weight in gold, specially when you get a run of injuries as we currently have.
