Report – Newcastle Have Decided On Our Number One Transfer Target In January

We have been linked with this player before Sandro Tonalia was banned until late next August from playing for Newcastle, because of his illegal betting.

And now a report in the Northern Echo suggests that Newcastle will indeed go after Manchester City’s 27-year-old England International Kalvin Phillips in January.

And it could even be a permanent deal – or a loan with an obligation to buy next summer, to help with the FFP rules.

Recently Pep Guardiola made statements – as follows – that he was not scared to sell Phillips to a Premier League rival like Newcastle.

“Would I stop a player from joining a rival? Never, ever,”

“I give my opinion to the club, and they decide if the transfer suits both sides and the player. Why? I think blocking a move means you are a small club.”

“Big clubs, they don’t care, they make decisions for the benefit of all three parties – players and both clubs and agents sometimes.”

“Really, it is not a problem. They want to go to Chelsea, United, Liverpool whoever. What is the problem?”

“They are happy to be there, the club is happy with the transfer, and the other club is happy with the amount of money they spend.”

“It’s fine.”

The number one priority at Newcastle in January is to bring in a central midfielder and it now looks like the number one candidate is Phillips.

News today that Elliott Anderson may be out longer than anticipated with his back in jury and well into next year before he can return – it seems his back injury is long term.

And at the moment we have 10 first-teamers injured with about half of them being long-term.

And Phillips has also been told by England manager Gareth Southgate that he must play more games if he is to make the England squad for Euro 2024 in Germany next year.

It also appears the lad seems very keen to get on the Newcastle train – destined for greatness over the next several years, under the new owners.

Phillips has not started one league game this season for City – so he’s really out in the cold in Manchester.

We have to hope that Dan Ashworth and his staff can bring Phillips in early in January, because he has a job to do at Newcastle with Tonali out for the season and Anderson out long term.

Manchester City have put a price of £50M on him but they only paid £42M to Leeds on a six-year contract in July of last year: we are sure a decent deal can be agreed with City.

We hope a decent deal can be agreed with City.

🙂

I think with our injuries we need a very versatile striker that can also play in all 11 positions on the pitch no problem, like a Peter Beardsley who had a great game in goal once 😉

Good strikers ‘drift’ across the front line and deep into midfield.

They do this to pull defenders out of position and open up alternative attacking possibilities.

However, they must possess the unerring knack of putting the ball in the bean bag. They must score goals with both feet, head and convert half chances.

I’d love another Alan Shearer right now. He had all the options/skills listed above.

Luke Edwards. The Irish guys I know just let me know. Maybe it’s luke being a misery but doubt it

It’s time to go big on a striker if we can find one

    ctt,
So with an out and out CF we’d have to play Isak on the left, where does that leave HB and AG?

Signing Toney in January will get us top 5, no worries. Gives us an added dimension, isak can play all over, ideally in a 4231, only time Eddie did it was Brentford away last year 2nd half and we terrorised them.

Must be about time some team started playing two proper strikers up top again.

It depends who is available at what price. If a cracking “number 9” is available and we can do a deal at 60m or whatever, go for it.

    I’d buy Griezmann.

    Still very good, rarely injured.

Happy not to be the main forward man.

New Challenge for him…. (he assists loads too – smidge like Beardsley)

(Squad usually has a highly talented Frenchman)

Think we should have seen a front six of

    Tonali. Bruno
    Gordon. Isak. Willock
    Toney

This season. However Tonali has bolloxed it up so Sean or big Joe will have to chip in.

    Toney aint Wood.

He can drip deep and play. He’s top class and whoever gets him (Spurs or Chelsea) will quickly jump above us in the prem pecking order

Griezmann, plays anywhere. Tracks back. Good work rate.

    Very Eddy Howe ready.

He’s a level up. But we’ve got to start shopping there.

Might not want to sign but is the type we need…

Be a shame if true, but at least we’ll have Isak back after the break.

If Wilson is out for that long then i’m sure it’ll be something they look at and consider in January. Whether he’s just back from injury or not.

Reckon we’ll either sign a young striker happy to be 3rd choice for the remainder of this season. Then if they do well look to be 2nd choice next season with Wilson 3rd.

Sorry, meant to say that type of striker or someone who is more settled and proven to come in as a rotational player for the remainder, to rotate with Isak and Wilson. Then next season be 2nd choice and rotate with Isak, as Wilson 3rd choice.

Wilson only has 18 month left. The time is now to get his replacement, he has lost a bit of pace has callum, cannot fault his goal return mind.

Still annoys me he started instead of Isak in the league cup final last year. Poor decision that was. Loyalty over ability.

For me, there are only 2 likely options for signing a striker in January:
1 – we sign a top striker for serious money (probably £60m+) who pushes Wilson down to 3rd choice
2 – we sign a young striker who could be amazing but isn’t proven at the top level yet. He could take to it like a duck to water but more likely he’s a player for next season or even the one after.

An unlikely 3rd option would be to sign a top quality right sided forward who can also play through the middle but this would shift out Almiron or Murphy and I’m not sure that will happen yet.

Aye, that Downbeat article triggered some memories. They’d start easing us out about six of a Sunday morning, before the buses started running….. how thoughtful…. and we’d go to the railway canteen next to the Central Station for a cuppa before bussng home.

    Cleveleys, Hibbit et al

You sound as though you’ve been around the clubs and been good boys eh? A couple of glasses of beer, a polite dance or two then off home…. just so you could be up early enough for church of a Sunday morning.

    Lesh,

I recall walking back from the Downbeat in the early hours of a Sunday morning in a Snowstorm with a couple of mates! We were frozen cold and had reached The Rising Sun (before the coast road had been rebuilt) and lo & behold this big Jag pulled up and the guy said “jump in lads” it was like walking through the gates into Heaven (well I imagine it would be nice and cosy) not in a hurry to find out. The heat was lush and we were all gobsmacked at the kindness of the driver! He could have been collecting us for slavery for all we knew! But he dropped us off in W/Bay and by then we’d thawed out. Happy days!

Cal’s injuries like check etc have also said: too injury prone, that makes him unreliable.
Isak gets unjured, no back up, typical!
Coulda woulda shoulda a year back, summer… now Jan.

    Build one from the bairns?

When I mentioned the Downbeat being a “Den of Iniquity”. It was because there were folks going round the edges of that big room flogging “Drugs” there was no way I was having any of that as by then I’d started smoking and was determined not to get into “Drugs, Drinking & Fags”. Drinking and Fags were more than enough – I still like a drink but can’t recall the last time I was drunk! I quit smoking almost 24 years ago – my biggest regret was starting in the first place!
I still suffer from respiratory issues after all that time but I’m still alive!

Ffp probably stymied our ability to go and splash out big on a striker last year.
So development of a bairn or cheaper youngster option may be the way to go?
Just someone that stays fit, gives it all, wants to learn and grow.
