It’s difficult for Newcastle these days, because whenever we get something great happening – like last night’s 3-1 win at Aston Villa, something negative also happens.
And last night it was Alexander Isak feeling his groin again, and telling coach Eddie Howe he had to come off even before halftime.
Miggy Almiron came on in his place, and although Eddie Howe said he was only 50% fit through illness, the Paraguayan International put in an excellent shift for Newcastle, setting up the vital 3rd goal early in the second half.
We hope Callum Wilson will be fit soon, and in any case, Anthony Gordon can play up front as he did when he was voted the best player in the European U21 tournament last summer.
Almiron, Gordon, and Murphy were the three up front in the second half last night, and apparently, Harvey Barnes is also very close to returning.
We were hoping Wilson and Isak would both be fit together, but it looks like that will not happen.
We still don’t know how serious Isak’s injury is – and the Newcastle medics will need to sort that out quickly in case it’s long-term.
This is what Eddie Howe said after the match last night about the transfer window:
“I expect to be finished for the window. I think there’s now very little time left to be able to do anything, whether in or out.”
“That’s where it stands. I don’t think we have the ability to do anything.”
“As far as I know at the moment, there’s nothing going to happen, although there’s still time left.”
We’d be happy enough if no business is done before Thursday night.
Hopefully, we can get more players returning to help out the side for the remainder of the season, which could turn out to be a lot better than we expected just a few weeks ago.
Comments welcome.

Comment #3Bad mistake not signing anyone. So will Hayden be part of squad?
We have lost Tonali and Pope so will we have a 25 man squad?
Gordon and Bruno suspended soon for 2 games each
No wilson or Isak they both will break down again
Big mistake

Comment #6Anderson back training on grass today. If all goes well with him, he should be back in a week or two.
Barnes, Wilson and Lascelles back for the game on Saturday. So a few more options upfront if Isak is not available.
Willock and Targett back for Forest away.
2 wins in a row away from home already in 2024. Matches our tally this season before the turn of the year.
Team playing like they were at the start of the season. You could see it coming in the performances recently, they were getting better game by game.
Plenty of reasons to be positive about.

Great news on the injury front. They’ve all been a huge miss. The one I really want to see kick in is Barnes. He can be lethal from the left side. Switch Gordon to the right or centre depending on who is injured etc.

Comment #8Congratulations to our Bingo winners, Swabler, Dubai Micky, Scott, Cleveleys Bob, The Taco Taker, Mickey G and Legolas. Scott obviously has Eddie’s ear as he continues to reign supreme but the dark horse The Taco Taker is charging up the league. I hit the post as did many others. Comment #12Fenners, Barnes and Willock on that left side when fully fit is something I can’t wait to see.
Could easily see a few of our players being able to do the false 9 role if needed.
Just great news we’re getting bodies back in the squad now.

Comment #14Was really impressed with the performance vs Villa, for many reasons, showed we can win away, the press was effective, players looked fresher, Burn set the tone with some firm challenges, Murphy looked sharper, bench was slightly stronger, Schar was great, Gordon looked back to himself again, Dubravka impressed too.
My only very minor moan, is it felt like for the last 10, even 5 mins that it was the perfect time to sub White on and get him involved.

Comment #15A number of us hit the post, Geordie Mongrel! As a Craig Hope supporter I should have known. You could see Miggi wasn’t fully fit, but he still contributed. Great character!
Our pressing was top class. As I thought the training is working, albeit a little quicker than I thought! I was ready with my tin hat yesterday, but from the off we were at it.
The lads need to practise their dinks over the onrushing goalkeeper. Beardsley was a master at it.
Great to see Eddie take immediate action following the Villa subs.
I took a keen interest in Diaby last year and was a little disappointed we didn’t go for him, but Gordon is proving the better choice.

Comment #16I can see the 25 man squad has been mentioned, I imagine will be Pope and Joelinton registered.
Tonali and Manquillo free up two places. Don’t think White uses up a space.
So if we can’t sort a loan/transfer for him, we might as well register Hayden I guess.

Comment #17Emery didn’t shake mad dogs hand because he probably doesnt like him. Tbf he was probably shithousing the Villa backroom staff all match.
I get the feeling hes not well liked by many outside the club because of the way he goes on, we adore him because hes our shithouse, but lets be real wed probably hate his guts if he was another teams shithouse.

Comment #18Isak can’t play with his back to goal or hold off the defender but then he’s not fit enough for long enough to learn how to do some that stuff
It does cause us problems when we are under pressure the ball just bounces off him and Wilson and let’s the opposition come straight back on at us
Gordon can do it pretty good but sometimes the little guys are built better for that kind of thing?
Isak is more Lanky and graceful and he’s one of the best finishers I think we’ve ever had but it’s

Nah, you still shake hands at the end. I’m sure he was being a shithouse and usually is, but it wouldn’t be anything too outrageous or overboard, or else he’d get sent off by the 4th official letting the referee know.
So is probably just standard shithousery between opposition, like players do, but you still shake their hand after the match knowing emotions are high during matches etc.
Same as when Jorginho didn’t shake Lascelles hand after the match. Just stinks of being a sore loser and arrogant if you ask me. Be the better man, get over it and shake your opponents hand.

Comment #21For the attention of Lesh.
When people like you call racism, it means absolutely nothing, people like you find it in something anyone you don’t like says, you cannot just words as they are meant.
A couple of years ago, jail said all these coming in were doctors and lawyers here to enrich us with great culture, and I was a racist because I disagreed that they were educated people, 99% of them are here for free money and health care which people like you give them it all for free, they get a free pension without paying a penny into it.
We have folk like you ruining Norway to.
I hope you are ready to go to war to defend them, because me my son nore any of my friends will defend the UK, that’s for you and your new friends.

Comment #22Next 3 games gives us a massive chance of getting revenge for 3 of our poorest performances this season. No reason with the uptick in players form and players getting back from injury and 2 of those games being at home, we can’t get 9 points. They won’t be easy games but are there for us to lay down a marker.

Comment #29Newcastle United could be set to get their hands on reported target Stéphano Carrillo after a development at the youngster’s current club. The 17-year-old has attracted attention aplenty ahead of turning 18 in just two months, and the Magpies are said to be keen on a deal.
Up to now, a deal has looked unlikely, but journalist Dominil Schneider, has now reported that the youngster’s current club, Club Santos, are now open to a deal. The report adds that talks over a potential deal involving European clubs are already underway, and Newcastle are tipped to be one of those clubs, with Wolves also credited with an interest.
Carrillo impressed for Mexico at the under-17s World Cup, and Club Santos are reportedly asking for a package worth more than £6million to sell him, while they also want a percentage of any future sale. Carrillo, who is a striker, would be a summer transfer, given he will not move on until after he turns 18 in March.

Comment #40Apologies in losing a bit of faith in Eddie before yesterday’s game.
However we played great and he eventually reacted to the backend of a game by changing shape and bring Tino on and going 5 at the back. Maybe a month too late but sure he will argue he has had no time to work on that system.
Think he’s a junkie for detail and wont just change a shape unless its been practiced to death on the training ground. Hopefully its the start of some flexibility in system when needed.
