Football Insider are reporting that Newcastle want to sign Everton defensive midfielder Amadou Onana in the summer and that they are creating an extensive scouting report on the 9 times-capped Belgium International.
Onana signed on at Everton from Lille on a five-year contract in August 2022 for a reported £33M that includes add-ons.
We were interested in Onana last month in the January window, but FFP restrictions seem to have ruled out any big incoming players at that time.
Onana stands 6ft 4ins tall and has played 59 times for Everton with 3 goals and has a contract that lasts through the end of June 2027.
With their 10-point deduction earlier this season, the Toffeees currnetly sit 3rd bottom of the league and it’s possible they could be relegated – especially with Luton Town starting to pull away from the bottom 3.
However, Everton are only 3 points behind 15th placed Brentford so any 3 of maybe 8 clubs could be relegated in May.
If Newcastle can sign Onana and manage to agree a deal to keep Joelinton at the club, then maybe Newcastle could unload one of their other central midfielders.
We do think Newcastle will see this summer as an opportunity to improve the squad across all positions and maybe sell some players as we do this.
From what we can tell, Onana would be an excellent signing for us, although the transfer fee will need to be (fairly) reasonable.
What do you think – comments welcome.

Klopp got the better of Eddie H twice, Eddie H has got the better of Arteta, Poch and Pep, these things happen, you simply can’t judge the manager on this season given the ridiculous amount of injuries we’ve had. Even now, CW and HB back only to lose AG and Isak in the same week, it’s insane.

Comment #5Never mind Munster Mag’s podcast where he’s found a site that caters for his perversion of slating everything Nufc, listen to Pod on the Tyne with Caulkin and Waugh, they give an honest assessment without slagging the manager, players and recruitment.

Comment #6Will be interesting to see what happens next season. Isak came to us as a low pressing but regularly fit player. Now he’s a high press player, but consistently injured. Hopefully this is a one off, or is he built for this system, or does he just need a better deputy. Joel is another with regular niggles. Hopefully this doesn’t continue.

You don’t really do debate too well eh ? 🙂
Just because people have a chat about tactics doesn’t mean we hate the club or think the manager should be hounded out according to lot of media there was lots of fans shouting for Tino in the ground that’s much worse than anything anyones said on here!!
So by the injury logic if no one comes back we have to lose every game for the rest of the season and we say oh tough luck what if the injuries continue next season? That’s essentially what you are saying
Games against Luton, Forest ,etc it’s been our naive tactics that have cost us not injuries there was no sign of fatigue at the weekend
The transfer business wasn’t enough In the summer and we didn’t seem to get priority areas plenty of journalists have mentioned this

Comment #11Lee I’d take 7th place. I think most of us were confident we were back on track after the brilliant win v Villa and then we had a Forest type performance the other day, albeit with a better result. Some were saying we underestimate the lower clubs at home. I don’t know.

Comment #12Lee debating with Jail isn’t a straightforward matter. For a start, he is never wrong. Secondly, if you say something that turns out incorrect he will remind you of it until the cows come home. For example, Mr tuff was incorrect about us not signing Gordon, so he gets reminded of it twice weekly
I wouldn’t bother. The whole season issues are down to injuries. The end. Its easier that way.

That is foo#in out of order, the reason Mr Tough gets reminded about AG is that he keeps trotting out the same old sh!te about me saying AG would play through the middle, which he has plenty of time. Not only that but he actually called people idiots for thinking we’d sign AG and even bigger idiots for thinking he’d play CW and Isak together, we all get things wrong, but when you’ve continually called someone stupid for claiming something that actually ended up happening, then you deserve to be reminded about it.

Assists – 0.25 (Top 4%)
Touchs in Att Pen Area – 3.04 (Top 5%)

Comment #25Just watched the vid about the new spend rules for next season and basically it looks like it favours the greedy 6 once again.
If the other 14 clubs are against it then all they need to do is vote no, job done.
I noticed the guy mentioned Luton as an example of a club who could be bankrolled by a mega rich owner, something the PL don`t want, when really he could of mentioned Newcastle United as the real reason this idea has been put forward.
A mega rich owner with a bottomless pit of money, what, we can`t have that , even though Man City and Chelsea were allowed to do it.
Lets face it, when Amanda and co rocked up at the cathedral many of us knew there would be a constant conveyor belt of barriers put up to stop us progressing, and that is exactly what is happening.

Comment #26A good and effective football team is about balance. A bit like that game Kerplunk, pull out the wrong straw and it all comes crashing down. Last season very few straws had to be pulled out, so that balance was rarely tested. This season Eddie has had to pull straws out on a weekly basis, and our balance just hasn’t been as good. I’m not an expert so can only guess as to whether the straw pulling could have been better. There are very few managers who can visualise the impact of different player combinations. It’s like complex choreography. This season we have to give Eddie the benefit of the doubt. An awful lot has run against him, but he’s got plenty right, although enough wrong too. The big test is next season. Hopefully our transfer business actually addresses what we need and we are not carrying any passengers in the squad.

Comment #27Decided to watch the Heed v Eastleigh and i feel sorry for the lads playing to basically an empty stadium.
I doubt there is 800 in the ground to watch a team who have been outstanding so far this season, and are playing way above their expectations.
Toon women are averaging 4k a game, puts this attendance into perspective.

Comment #28Joelinton on his future:
“Yes, of course I want to stay. I feel at home here. My family feels at home, my son has friends here. I love the city. There have been talks, there’s nothing close yet but there’s been conversations and it’s a good start.”
Give the man whatever he requires and get his future sorted to stay with the toon. He ain’t going nowhere reading that above statement. Him and Bruno love it here and are here to stay for a while. Huge huge season next season coming up for big joe

Comment #32The Premier league also needs to be careful the greedy 6 can’t see beyond their own noses but this happened in la liga where eventually it will ruin what makes this League great
Newcastle, Villa, Brighton and West Ham all knocking on the door pushing Man Utd and Chelsea out but it would be gash if all of us can’t improve by having selling a Bruno or Isak when we should be adding to the quality

Comment #36I don`t trust the PL at all, never have. There is corruption everywhere and sport, including football is no different.
There was an article a while back showing the owners of the greedy 6 having a chinwag over a meal etc, our owners weren`t invited obviously, no doubt they were plotting the next move to stop the upstarts from the north east raining on their parade.
They are as thick as thieves, and i have got no doubt they have a lot of influence over certain members of the PL, the breakaway Super lge told me everything i needed to know about that lot.

Comment #37How to twist the truth. Gail you said AG would make a good centre forward and then later twisted/morphed this into him playing centrally in the forward line – WHICH IS NOT THE SAME AS PLAYING AS A CENTRE FORWARD.

Comment #38Onana would be a great buy – as we don’t have a defensive midfielder on our books
All offensive and that is the problem down our left.
Yes Burn is getting skinned every week at the minute but he has no cover in front of him could drive a fleet of buses between our centre halves, midfield and burn
