Joelinton arrived at Newcastle back in the summer of 2019 for £40M from 1899 Hoffenheim as a center-forward.
But as we know, he was not a great success as an out-and-out striker and didn’t seem to have the natural desire to score goals the great strikers, like Alan Shearer, had.
But just over two years later, after Newcastle was bought by a consortium including the Saudi Arabia PIF and Eddie Howe was brought in as the head coach, his fortunes changed dramatically.
Eddie Howe moved the big Brazilian to a central midfield position and he’s never looked back and been capped 5 times by Brazil.
Joelinton has about 16 months left on his contract, and news today in the Chronicle that Newcastle are continuing to try to get a deal done to keep Joelinton at Newcastle.
It’s obvious since he’s been injured that Newcastle is not quite the same team without him in the starting lineup – and he’s definitely one of our very best players.
It would be a huge loss if we should lose the player.
But if Newcastle cannot agree a deal by this summer, they may want to sell him so that we don’t lose him as a free agent in the summer of 2025.
Joelinton wants to become one of the club’s highest earners, and since he is one of our best players – why not?
Currently, the highest earners are said to be Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes.
Eddie Howe wants to keep the player and we’re sure he has made his feelings known to those above him in the Newcastle hierarchy.
If it doesn’t look like Newcastle can tie Joelinton down to staying on Tyneside, another player will need to be brought in – but surely we can get the Brazilian to stay at Newcastle on a new improved deal?
Joelinton is out for the season, after having an operation on his thigh, so we are really hoping we can keep the 27-year-old.
It would be tragic if we cannot keep our best players at Newcastle and it would set a bad precedent.

Comment #3If we want to be a really top club it’s time we started to act like one and give Joelinton, our second best player, what he wants ie what he’s worth.
As for Dan Ashworth, if his loyalty (for only 2 years) is as flimsy as that – good riddance, but I’d make sure we profit it from it. £20mill or no appointment. Take it or leave it.
We were always told how hard nosed the Saudis were in business. Now’s the time to prove it.
