Eddie Howe saved Newcastle from relegation after coming in early November back in 2021 with Newcastle second bottom of the Premier League.
Howe revived the side, after bringing in five new players in January 2022, and we ended up finishing in 11th pace on 49 points.
Last season was unbelievable, with Newcastle finishing in 4th place on 71 points and qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.
Last season we also reached the Carabao Cup final but were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United at Wembley.
But the strain of 2 games a week this season, coupled with far too many injuries to some of our star players, has put a spanner in the works, so to speak.
We reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last Saturday, but Newcastle are struggling in 10th place in the league and we are currently out of a European slot for next season.
Premier League Table 2023-2024
Position | Team | Played | Won | Lost | Drawn | GD | Points |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
5 | Tottenham | 38 | 20 | 12 | 6 | 13 | 66 |
6 | Chelsea | 38 | 18 | 11 | 9 | 14 | 63 |
7 | Newcastle | 38 | 18 | 14 | 6 | 23 | 60 |
8 | Man United | 38 | 18 | 14 | 6 | -1 | 60 |
9 | West Ham | 38 | 14 | 13 | 10 | -14 | 52 |
Alan Shearer backs Eddie Howe to put things right, and this is what the Newcastle icon has said on BBC Radio One:
“This season has been tough for Newcastle, but there have been mitigating circumstances, the injuries, especially to Nick Pope and Joelinton,”
“They miss both of those a lot.”
“Eddie Howe still has plenty of credit in the bank.”
“Whatever happens this season, whether they finish mid-table or qualify for Europe, Eddie Howe will be Newcastle’s manager next season.”
We agree with Alan’s reasoning, but next season will have to be (a lot) better than this season.
And that will be helped if Newcastle either don’t qualify for Europe or we do qualify in the easier Europa League or Europa Conference, but that still means 2 games a week, especially in the first half of the season.
What do you think about this?

Comment #81FtC; You forgot to mention that Howe travelled Europe, during his sabbatical, to increase his coaching knowledge and learn from the elite coaches in the game.
For someone to say that he is unable to learn, is an absolute insult to the man’s professionalism.

Totally agree with that post mate
Eddie Howe took over us in dire straights and I’d doubt Pep or Klipperty could of done any better
I think it’s only on this blog that Eddie gets questioned and it’s only from the Munster gang
Most of us realise the situation and understand he can’t always over achieve
Eddie is King

Comment #83After years reading then posting then not posting nor reading I am still surprised to come on in last few days and find the constant “playing of the man not the ball” back and forth even between sparring partners from years ago
It’s always been said “don’t feed the WUMs” so if you truly believe that some posters are in fact only here to cause an argument then don’t give them one as you can’t persuade them as they don’t actually hold the view your contesting
On the other hand some do hold strong opposite views and post them (it’s a Blog ) but exchanging insults doesn’t really further either side of an argument
Some enjoy playing to the gallery of course – on both side of a ruck
Personally I think we mostly have some who hold different views (few if any Mackems or WUMS) and they are entitled to put them forward reasonably even if in the minority but should expect a challenge to them
In my early days on here over 12 years ago I came under a lot of fire as I wasn’t in tune or step with the then vociferous majority and returned like with like at times but always tried not to resort to personal insults
I didn’t think it carried the argument and I was confident in my own opinion to seek to push that rather than “nan nan nan nah” tongue out and fingers in ears
I learned as many have that if you don’t believe youre involved in a sincere debate then ignore it don’t bite
Others like to row but it takes two
I truly wish that if not respecting each other, posters could give Ed the respect he deserves
Sermon over I might get back to football later 🙂

Comment #85That friendly against Spurs at the MCG in the week before the FA Cup final could be quite an occasion. Hell of a stadium, in one of the world’s great sporting capitals. Could be quite a crowd there, of Toon, Spurs and Postecoglou fans, as well as football fans in general and neutrals. I remember Liverpool playing I think Melbourne City there in Gerrard’s last season. 100 000 in attendance, all joyous, and the most stirring rendition of you’ll never walk alone I’ve ever seen, not that I’ve seen many, but it was mightily impressive, for a club playing in a stadium on the other side of the world. Gerrard, I remember, had seen it all before of course. He just stood impassively waiting for the kick off, chewing gum, occasionally spitting and staring out into the middle distance, as the song swirled around the entire stadium and up and away into the night sky. It really was something, and we might get a similar crowd and atmosphere.

#81 I’m sure Wor Eddie wouldn’t give a toss that some self entitled disrespectful moron from here called him out as “unable to learn.”
Of course Eddie traveled to Europe to learn some of the dark arts of defensive shitehousery from the wizard of dark arts himself “Diego Simeone” Aye Eddie is an incredibly intelligent professional and he will only get better and we’re absolutely blessed to have the man at the helm.
King Eddie rules and will for a long time. Onwards and upwards.

There are a group of people (I think they’re people) that have their daggers out for Eddie. When you see this list you know they’re are not to be taken seriously at all:
– TROLL and it’s alts (GoonIrish, Arthur Ramsbottoms, a few more also)
– Munter (TWAT of all Twats)
– IrishNob (irelands Frank Spencer)
– Jimiley
– Retonda Heights
– Sorrow the mackem
– Sabatosa

Comment #89The added European games were the tipping point for our season you might think, and the catalyst for all the injuries. We have badly missed Pope and Joel for sure, but we’ve effectively also had next to nothing from Barnes, Tonali and Willock also, and about one players worth of contribution from Isak and Wilson, and of course the absence of Botman, and struggles since his return to the side. Eddie has been very sound at the helm through troubled waters of a testing campaign, and he of course is still relatively young and learning. We needs a few players, and a good pre season and decent start to the next campaign, and I think we are back, and I think it’s odds on we’ll get it.

Comment #90I think we all (well most) want success but we need to realise it doesn’t come easy and what the owners are doing is set it up where we can bring in quality younguns and itergrade them like the scousers have done, that is coming on nicely and the first team is very good when all are fit and that excites me
What they’re doing is making our future good and I believe EH is integral to that he has a canny knack of improving players we just need to stick by him in his early years as manure did with that jock

Comment #93Eddie isnt a miracle worker. He needed the January signings and Clark red card to play Joelinton in midfield to get us to click. Until then he was actually struggling really bad with the team.
If Eddie would have got us winning from the very start then yeah Id say it was all Eddie but thats not the case

Comment #96I like Eddie a lot, but I think he needs a good start to next season, and then to maintain our momentum. 3 years in the job, is actually a decent shift, and if things aren’t happening, it’s often the manager who takes the fall. I think there is a real commitment to Eddie, but I think he probably needs top six next season, and of course a trophy would really help, and we are so overdue, it’s mind bending.

Comment #99Interesting fan view:
“If there is one thing that seems to be apparent this season, it is that despite all the high and lows, we do not seem to take any lessons from them.
We have a plan A that fits 11 players and it can be executed fantastically, as demonstrated by some lovely wins this season. The downside is that when one or more of those players are not available, we do not adapt accordingly.
We do not change the system to suit the players in the line-up and we also do not adapt the formation to counteract our opponents. We struggle to break down teams that sit back, but we also get caught out on the counter attack far more times than we should”
Ps. It was a Spurs fan. ;D

Comment #100We will have a barnstormer of a season next season. I feel it in my bones, I’m actually excited for next season even more so than for this one. I know that group of men will do everything to turn it around…
Next season the skate is wiped clean, the lads go for it big time and they will. All these naysayers on here and twatter will evaporate like water in a desert. But you will get your idiots that would still find faults. The troll will come out with Eddie is too white and too English. He has said it before to crazed racist.

Re your comment @80
It’s true that I like reading Munster’s stuff, although that doesn’t necessarily mean that I always agree with his viewpoint.
I enjoy it because I prefer reading an entertaining blog of varying opinions rather than everyone singing from the same hymn sheet.
I pretty much enjoy everyone’s input…..with the possible exception of John J.

Comment #110Only from a handful of wums and a couple of nervous Nellie’s though CH. Some take a less rosy perspective than others. I don’t mind any of it. No one knows what the future holds. Personally I feel good about things, and that Eddie Howe will probably guide us to that outrageously elusive piece of silverware. European qualification this season is important, but not crucial. If we don’t achieve it, I think top six and a first domestic trophy in 70 years becomes more clearly sighted in our crosshairs. I’m quite relaxed about things. So long as we have Pifs backing, we are gonna experience a kind of manifest destiny, haha. We are going to really push the boundaries of the game, despite all the attempts to rein us in.

Comment #120Must admit iv slagged Longstaff off earlier in the season, I just don’t think he is top half player
Now I’m gonna say Dubs is not top half, I don’t think he talks to his defenders
He could of told Bots and others to leave it and collected it when we conceded
Pope’s been a massive miss and Eddie knows it
