Sven Botman Out For 6-9 Months With ACL Injury – What’s Going On?

Newcastle have announced a rather surprising and distressing injury to Sven Botman.

We know Botman has had a knee injury and has been playing injured for a month or more. so what are the medical staff at Newcastle doing?

We have had more injuries this season than in any season in recent memory.

Newcastle must get to the bottom of why this has been the case – with the Botman injury hopefully leaving some embarrassed people in the medical department.

Particularly those who are responsible for diagnosing injuries and selecting the initial treatment.

Here’s the distressing statement issued by Newcastle today on Botman:

Sven Botman has suffered an ACL knee injury against Manchester City and will be out 6-9 months.

Newcastle United defender Sven Botman will undergo surgery next week after suffering a knee injury against Manchester City.

Following further assessment, a scan has confirmed that he sustained an injury to his ACL during Saturday’s match and he is expected to return to action within six-to-nine months.

The Dutch center-back initially sustained a knee injury in September 2023 and elected for a non-surgical rehabilitation plan – a decision which saw him return to action in December.

Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Sven a full and speedy recovery.

This injury asks some big questions of the medical department on all the injuries we have had and initial decisions made on their treatment.

There should be an independent investigation of all our injuries this season.

This includes the diagnosis, initial treatment, why these initial decisions were made, what the alternatives were, and why some players like Botman and Longstaff were (are) playing while injured.

We are already damaged by injuries for next season.

🙁

And Botman’s absence will not help us in the final 10 games of this season while we try to qualify for Europe.

What do you think?

I said this was going to happen to Botman he looked like he’s been playing in the red zone for weeks

We should turbo charge ahead to secure Tosin and Kelly on free transfers to give us some pace and depth would be trying to give young Murphy minutes as well to see if he could step up

I also would worry about Schar and Bruno have played every game this season big ask to repeat that again

    Novocastrian66,
There was obviously other options to surgery, unless we’ve gone to the cheapest specialists in the area he’s been given the right advice at the time. Wrong in hindsight.

This summer is huge 90% of our backline is well into their 30s

Pope – is he injury prone big risk to rely on him next season as first choice
Trips – defensively he’s been shite for 6 months offensively still great but it hampers the team at the same time to accommodate him
Schar – still good but he will be 34?
Lascalles – 31 decent but no going to get better
Burn – not a left back anymore should be good enough for backup next season at CB
Target – how is he 28? Make or break for him now
Botman – likely out till January no idea what condition he will be in

Then we have Tino and Hall in the young areas

Never mind other areas of the field we need a bit of a serious revamp in this area next season

Lee I think we might have to forget midfielders and as u say concentrate on centre backs. And strikers, and a right winger.

If we invest in pace at the back, Eddie can transform how we play, pushing further up and releasing mids like Bruno to be more dangerous.

Personally I’d love to see the role of the sweeper coming back in football 🙂

How good would Schar be as a “libero” .

    Bloody Nora!

Our success last season was down to our defence

    Tripps Schar Botman Burn
    But mainly Pope behind them

If you lose Pope and Botman hasn’t been the same since his injury and lose Joelinton to cover the runners past Burn then there’s the reason our form has dropped off

We really do need a good keeper who can control the defence and a fast CB
Midfield is OK a LB is needed if Hall doesn’t sign permanent and a right sided forward should get us challenging again

So 3/4 quality signings 150m then rake in 50m from sales
    Doesn’t seem impossible

    LCPB,

#2 I’m with you and he was t post. We should go all in on Tosin and Kelly for sure, both are the type we need as they’re athletes, with bags of skill and rapid…

I think Eddie will definitely take a close look at Murphy in preseason as he didn’t look out of place in preseason last time. Mind if Eddie believes it’s too soon for Murphy we will need potentially 2 CBs signed now and they must have pace Tosin has it in abundance and on a free. We must go all in for him. Sprinkle some Eddie Howe magic dust on him and he could really excel.

Some pathetic posting on here on the catch up. A poster who revels in bad news has posted non stop and clearly excited since the sickening news of Botmans injury blow came out stuttering “ha I told you so, I told you so” whilst slavering all over his tank top and corduroys. The kid is an absolute buffoon of the highest order.

Then starts saying “if PIF stay with us” hahaha get to f*** you sad sack of depressed, negativity. He said there are some idiots on here, no s*** Sherlock…Aye look in the mirror you’ll see a sweaty unhinged, unhealthy idiot looking straight back at ye.

You go to one Consultant and they say A. You go to another and they say B.
That creates a hell of a dilema.
Some years ago Shearer, Owen, Belamy and others all went to see Dr Richard Steadman. Sadly he passed away early last year. He had been retired for a while, but was still being asked for advice from fellow specialists until quite recently apparently.
Once heard it said that what Steadman did could be done by the best Surgeons in this country.
So, why go all the way to the US. Think it was Colarado.

Would think it was all about confidence. If your career is on the line and you are going under the knife you want complete confidence. In the advice, the decision and the process.

As I say Dr Steadman is no more. He was regarded as the best.
Someone else will now hold that position I would think.

Also Isak can definitely score and create from the left if you had an ollie Watkins up front who can drift right and Isak can drift centre interchangeable
He can be our Henry without doubt but I sort of agree with Adam that he won’t track back from an orthodox LW but that doesn’t mean with the right set up he can’t play left forward

    CH,

No mate he is rarely injured. I’ve family members who support Bournemouth and they are waxing lyrical about him. He is a top athlete, strong 6ft 2” rapid and skilful. He loves to overlap and gets good crosses into the box. I’d be gobsmacked if Eddie didn’t get him and on a free. He is a good pro and the stories of him being injury prone are far fetched

He has had 4 injuries since 19/20 season. In 23 season he did have 11 games out with an ankle injury which has fully healed, the others have just been strains in the hamstring but very rare

Jail; I understand there were alternative solutions to his injury however it would seem that Botman had the final say.
It is his body and he has to make the call but he is a young man and we can only hope that he was well informed.
Players will almost always want to play and they have to be protected from themselves.
The club has had a nightmare season regarding injuries.
I would like to think the club has spared no expense in ensuring the players are being given the best medical attention nevertheless something isn’t right.
It cannot all be bad luck.

Lloyd Kelly has played 34 Premier League games in the past 2 seasons.
Calum Wilson has played in 47.

Kelly’s best run of games was their 2 years in the Championship when he did play in most of their games.

Kelly could be described i guess as a modern version for Burn? Great in the air, fast and really good on the ball

He plays that 3rd inverted CB role for Bournemouth like Burn does for us except he’s rapid he wouldn’t be getting roasted every week for pace

The only issue is he’s been linked with Man Utd and Liverpool as well but hopefully it’s just press talk and we’ve already got him signed up

I’m fascinated by this idea that we need a DM. I’m not against it, but it doesn’t seem like Eddie like to play with one, and also you need cover, which maybe we have in Miley or Lobby or Tonali and also we’d need to commit to it from the off next term, pre season, with the likelihood that the DM would have not yet arrived. It’s true though, most clubs do play with a DM, you might argue City, the best in the business, play with two.

Won trophies, sweeper keeper and great with the ball at his feet and good shot stopper

    CH,

Apologies mate scrap that about Lloyd Kelly not being injured much. With a more in depth look into his injury history, it’s not great unfortunately, seeing the below I’d be surprised if Eddie goes for him. His injury history is below average:

    23/24 (3 injuries) 18 – games missed
    22/23 (3 injuries) 18 – games missed
    21/22 (1 injury) 4 – games missed
    20/21 (3 injuries) 10- games missed
    19/20 (1 injury). 3 – games missed

    @Nicky

It’s a weird setup we have under Howe we essentially seem to have 3 midfielders trying to share responsibility but often it just leaves us wide open because no one wants to sit back no other top team plays like that there is more definition in roles

A DM would allow us to have both fullbacks flying forward which would suit us better because we are quite lop sided with all the right hand side action even Arteta and Pep have ditched that tactic with Cancelo and Zinchenko experiment no longer working

Another thing we also lack is a no 10 option which would help defensively as well stopping teams playing through the middle and give us some control

Just we seem all over the place in the middle not sure Tonali will improve that either as he’s more of an 8 but we shall see how next season goes

In reference to you`re post earlier, with this unfortunate injury to Botman, i see it as the perfect opportunity to move big Dan over to left center back, and unleash young Lewis Hall at left back, the lad has waited patiently for his big chance, it might even reap great benefits in much the same way as when Kieran Clarke got sent off, and Big Joe moved into midfield mate.

On the music yes U2/ Bono were also excellent, i just like a wide range of music marra, irrespective of what part of the world they hail from.

We were also defensively all over the place when Joelinton was playing as well

His most productive position was on the left wing rotating with Willock last season

He’s not a true midfielder either but he does add physicality and he wins headers which Isak, Almiron etc don’t do so we never keep possession when we go long apart.from when Joel plays

We need to sort that next season and get someone else who can add physicality like a Toney esque forward
