Newcastle have announced a rather surprising and distressing injury to Sven Botman.
We know Botman has had a knee injury and has been playing injured for a month or more. so what are the medical staff at Newcastle doing?
We have had more injuries this season than in any season in recent memory.
Newcastle must get to the bottom of why this has been the case – with the Botman injury hopefully leaving some embarrassed people in the medical department.
Particularly those who are responsible for diagnosing injuries and selecting the initial treatment.
Here’s the distressing statement issued by Newcastle today on Botman:
Sven Botman has suffered an ACL knee injury against Manchester City and will be out 6-9 months.
Newcastle United defender Sven Botman will undergo surgery next week after suffering a knee injury against Manchester City.
Following further assessment, a scan has confirmed that he sustained an injury to his ACL during Saturday’s match and he is expected to return to action within six-to-nine months.
The Dutch center-back initially sustained a knee injury in September 2023 and elected for a non-surgical rehabilitation plan – a decision which saw him return to action in December.
Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Sven a full and speedy recovery.
This injury asks some big questions of the medical department on all the injuries we have had and initial decisions made on their treatment.
There should be an independent investigation of all our injuries this season.
This includes the diagnosis, initial treatment, why these initial decisions were made, what the alternatives were, and why some players like Botman and Longstaff were (are) playing while injured.
We are already damaged by injuries for next season.
🙁
And Botman’s absence will not help us in the final 10 games of this season while we try to qualify for Europe.
What do you think?

Great song and performance
Written by one if her accompanying musicians Eleanor McEvoy who played it with her the last time I saw her at Newcastle City Hall
I also managed to see Eleanor solo here in Scarborough a few years ago – another talented lady

You seen to be quite knowledgeable and well informed on the music front, do you have a wide interest in most types of music mate? As for myself i like most types of music anything from Pop to Classical.

Comment #48I’d take Kelly on a free. Not great injury record but really good player.
Also Tosin seems a no brainer if we can get him.
Another free I’d snap your hand off for is Ross Barkley. Oh how we could have done with him this season.

Comment #49At what point can a club turn round and say to the PL that they can’t fulfill their fixtures due to injuries? Squad is limited to 25. So if we have 10 out, we can still pick from 15. What if 15 are out. We then have to pick youngsters. But doesn’t that mess with sporting integrity? And as a business, we’re not allowed to invest during an injury crisis to protect our investment. It’s just plain fecking bonkers.

I couldn`t agree more on Ross Barkley Harley, that lad has been nothing short of sensational this season for Luton, and looks one of the best midfielders in the premier league, i would dearly love him at the Toon Harley mate.

That’s a good point
The squad size should be 30 IMO with so many games and the speed of the game its hard to keep players injury free these days

Comment #52All you whiners out there morning we’ve had a below average season, look at our injuries and digest it:
Nick Pope – Shoulder – May 24
Joelinton – Groin – until May 24
Callum Wilson – Chest – until May 24
Harvey Barnes – Hamstring – until March 24
Kieran Trippier – Calf – until April 24
Tino Livramento – Ankle – until March 24
Sven Botman – ACL – until January 25
Sandro Tonali – Suspension until 27th Aug 24
Then with the all the other niggly injuries Isak for one…
NUFC have lost a crazy amount of days nearing an amount of 1,500 due to injuries since the season kicked off. The worst injury record in EPL history.
Yes NUFC need to do some deep investigating to get to the root cause of the above situation. This needs serious action taken as it cannot happen again.

Comment #55Don’t worry about Botman lads and lasses.
We have an Irish International that will slide in and be the Paul McGrath of Newcastle United.
Come on lad, it’s your time to shine Mr Alex Murphy.
Joking apart, it would be good to see if the lad can handle the pressure, I’m sure he can.
As someone stated, this may be a good time to give some of the fringe players a chance to avoid more injuries.

Comment #60Not saying this is the reason but didn’t all of the clubs this guy worked at had major injury issues?
If so, what the flying fcuk are we doing.
King was Head of Academy Sport Science and Medicine for the Cherries ( Bournemouth ) from 2012 to 2014 and their First Team Physio from 2016 to 2021. He joined Leicester as First Team Rehab Physio in July 2021.
Not sure if Danny Murphy the old physio had the same issue with injuries.
Maybe he did, let’s hope someone at the club looks into this to see what the hell is going on.

Yes I’ve loved music since before I was even a teen
Love music from most eras from late 50’s to now and maybe 20’s for blues
Like Folk, Alt- country, Classic Rock, Blues
Good pop like Abba, The much maligned Taylor Swift
Born in the 50s but made in the 60s so late 60s was my favourite era but I like to keep up with modern music as well but mainly guitar bands
Rap I don’t really get and struggle with Jazz but like quite a lot of classical and film scores by Hans Zimmer, Ennio Morricone,
Essentially good lyrics, melody, chord structure and harmony and I’ll listen
Music is my goto when I need a lift, inspiration or relaxation- gets me through the hard yards

Comment #62Ross Barkley has certainly revived his career after poor move to Chelsea – not only young player to find the grass isn’t always greener….
Really caught eye at Everton and looks good in a dynamic Luton side but what would he cost?
Used to think.he maybe had an attitude problem but seems to have matured
Another powerful box to box midfielder – do we need another?
Not sure if he’s a best fit for a position we’re desperate for but a good player

Comment #67Hopefully Eddie will migrate to playing two styles because constant high press can’t work. The Tonali signing, instead of getting a 6, suggests that this is his philosophy.
Or, to sign a 6 who can also be an 8 ( bit like Bruno I suppose )
Big summer to come, but the Botman injury is a killer for the budget surely?
Oh, I forgot we don’t have a budget, as some guys so wisely told us in the past
Course not!

Comment #69Blog round midnight used to be more or less a safe place, a chill zone
Now it’s either an empty street with last autumn’s last survlving leaves blowing about or folk staying behind closed curtains as gunslingers look to put notches on their guns as they shoot down any stray strands of posts that were so fired up they haven’t yet laid down for the night
Looks like it’s back to the Kindle as a sleeping pill then 😉

Comment #70I trust our recruitment department this summer they haven’t let us down yet .
Wd have signed some brilliant players, both first team ready and youth player .
If they listened to some of our experts on here, we would be stuck with the lies of Dennis,Murdyk, Cornet, etc .
Some people just better sticking to YouTube, I think !

Comment #72Bruce the idiot was so successful in hard wiring Lascelles’ brain, rewiring it is turning out to be a chore. After so many months Lascelles is unable to keep things clean over 90 minutes. So Eddie had to put Botman on before perhaps he was fully fit. And here we are…

Comment #74It’s as though we’ve gone to a series of speciists who’ve all said you need an op and just completely ignored them and let the player decide. Some people want to believe this because it gives them an excuse to rant and rave.

Comment #75Excellent post from UT over the road
“A tad devastating the Botman news.
As it wasn’t a full knacker job they decided it was worth taking the risk on recovery by itself.
If the specialists were saying and I would imagine world leading knee quacks that he could have recovered, then the gamble was a logical decision. He rested and was given green light to train and play. The knee has deteriorated and he goes under the knife. He’s still out for 9 months whether he had the op in Oct or now with a possibility he recovered and didn’t need one. It’s a sound decision.
Unless the Botman was feeling it all the time and not letting on. I always think big Joe is guilty of this. I admire their commitment and just hope they shrug it off.
But aye, the club must just use year 1 medical students for advice on possible critical injuries to vital 1st team club project players who start every game”

Comment #76Exactly, he would have still been out for the season so they’ve took the advice onboard and to try and get him back for cups runs, CL group stages and a top six finish, it’s not paid off and we lose him until next January. We just accelerate our plans to replace Schar, instead of a young up and coming CB like maybe they’d planned, we buy a PL ready and have to spend an extra few quid. Don’t know wtf has happened to this fan base these last few months.
