With the injury to Sven Botman Newcastle will now be looking for a left-footed center-back who can come in and deputize for the Dutchman, who will likely be out injured with his ACL injury for the rest of this year.
Newcastle have been interested in 21-year-old 6ft 5ins tall center-back Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton.
It’s thought the fee Everton would ask would be at least £85M, and too much for Newcastle with the financial constraints of PSR.
Another center-back that has perked Newcastle’s interest is 20-year-old 6ft 3ins tall Ousmane Diomande of Sporting Lisbon.
The Ivory Coast star is right-footed, however, although he looks like an extremely promising player coming through the ranks at Lisbon.
Nottingham Forest’s 21-year-old Brazilian center-half Murillo is left-footed and has been playing well for Forest although he stands only 5ft 11ins tall.
With center-backs now being as tall as 6ft 5ins and taller, the Brazilian may not be tall enough for what Newcastle need.
Nottingham Forest may have to sell one or more players before the end of June, for PSR reasons, and in this case, Murrillo could possibly be brought in at a bargain fee?
Murillo has played 27 times for Forest since being brought in from Corinthians last summer.
Newcastle could be OK if we can keep both Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles fit through the end of the year since they formed a good partnership while Botman was out injured this season.
But with Newcastle’s luck, it’s almost certain one of them will pick up an injury next season, hence the importance of bringing in another center-back – probably a young central defender.
Both Paul Dummett and Emil Krafth have also shown, that if they are given a chance, they can do the job at center-back.
But Eddie Howe never picks them?
We also have Dan Burn, who is probably more comfortable in the left central defender position, than at left-back.
What do you think?

It would be good to see Isak play centrally with another top CF just means big changes.

Yeah I think ultimately we would look a different team if we were attacking with width both sides of the pitch
Having Trips as the playmaker and Burn not really offering anything but a defensive shield hinders us as well worked good last season but teams have figured it out
If we could get someone of the quality of a Robertson with Tino or Trips on the right we could open up teams and get our front 3 in the box doing damage
Even Pep and Arteta have kind of moved on from the fullback being the playmaker trend to go back to more traditional fullback this season
Saying that I bet Trips likes being the playmaker and touching the ball the most out of any player!!

It would be different what I would say is whenever I watch Toney he’s always in the game Brentford are a much poorer outfit than us and he can almost win games on his own because of his quality
If playing for us the ball would come to him and it would stick allowing our players to make runs and play off
What happens with our front line a lot the now is we get it to them with a long ball out but they lose it and suddenly our slow midfield get caught out because they have pushed up to get involved happens so many times
It’s all wishful thinking as I doubt we are probably not even looking at any player like that because of FFP

Comment #86We all talk about buying an up and coming striker but every club in the PL is looking for them, look at that Brazilian kid we were supposedly linked with, Franca?? Was it. He’s hardly featured at all for Palace and has been anonymous when he has according to reports.

Comment #93I think there’s every chance we keep Wilson next season and bring Minteh into the squad. Isak the main man but with Wilson and Minteh getting minutes it would ease his workload. Both Wilson and Minteh won’t mind being on the bench if they get some game time. Wilson would just be grateful to still be involved in a big club and Minteh would be happy to bide his time and learn. Spend the money elsewhere.

But Wilson’s injuries aren’t anything to do with his workload, this latest was grapling in injury time, that Man U one on Boxing day a couple of seasons ago, he’d been well managed in the games previously and just broke down with nobody around him. It’s time to cash in, imo.

Well that’s the main issue but in my dream team Toney is up front with a fluid front 3 behind him in a 4231 formation….
So Isak could play wherever he wants in a free role rotating with Gordon and Barnes

Yes cash in on Wilson if we can sell him, but there may be no takers. Club May then decide to keep him another year as he’s not on big money. But there is a reliability issue. And it will come down to how much money we’ve got to spend and other competing priorities.

Yes £54k/week but I view that as relatively cheap for a forward. And no transfer fee to pay out. Yes sell him if there are takers but who’s going to take a punt on him with his injury record.

Comment #110For me Watkins is the CF that got away. I said on here at the time that I’d have preferred Watkins to Wilson when we bought Callum. Weren’t those deals done at about the same time? Watkins stays fit, is a better runner and can finish. We need a younger Watkins before they become £80m players.

It’s interesting that Nick de Marco’s involved in defending the club and the more experience he gets of the PSR rules, there’s potential for him to lead a challenge on the legitimacy of them.

Comment #120There has been some utter crap on here about ligament injuries and associated conditions from the know it all blog Medical Professors, Consultants, and Registrars – none of whom I suspect could even apply an elastoplast correctly.
Yeez will know who I’m talking about – the arguers/ruck merchants /clever dicks etc etc – same folk all the time.
Anyway here is a good NHS link explaining all the options involving these types of injuries. Seek the correct information and not the Doctor Deaths duff info on here.
