After what has been a disappointing season for Newcastle, the summer transfer window will be important for the club and it needs to be successful if we are to move forward from this season.
The first thing we need to do is to sign Brazilian International Joelinton up to a long-term deal, and while the rumors are that both sides want a deal, if he does not sign before the summer he will be sold.
That’s because Newcastle needs to receive fees for players leaving the club to help us with the Profitability and Sustainability Rules – PSR.
We also have an obligation to buy left-back Lewis Hall from Chelsea for a fee of £28M, plus £7M in add-ons – that fee would be amortized over the length of Lewis’ contract which would probably be five years for the 19-year-old.
Hall is still very young and will improve under the coaching of Eddie Howe: he has looked good when given his chance in the first team, and he played 12 times for the Chelsea first team.
We expect striker Callum Wilson to move on in the summer, but we hope we don’t have to sell striker Alexander Isak, with Arsenal very keen to sign him this summer.
We paid around $70M for Isak from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022, and we would want at least $100M if he were to leave Newcastle this summer.
We hope we will not sell Isak – who oozes with class.
We have been linked with signing Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth as a free agent and he can play at left-back or left-sided center-back.
The only worry with Kelly is whether he is better than the players we already have and if he would just be a squad player?
Newcastle will want to sign another striker this summer and a right-sided winger and that could open the way for Miggy Almiron to leave the club, although he turned down a move to Saudi Arabia in January.
With goalkeeper Loris Karius leaving Newcastle to be closer to his girlfriend and family in Germany, Newcastle may want to bring in a young talented goalkeeper who can develop into a first-team player – long term.
It will be important that Newcastle have a stronger squad for next season as we need a good season to get back on track to becoming a regular top-six side after our squad has been decimated by injury this season.
And of course, we will need to bring in a center-back as cover for Sven Botman, who has an ACL knee injury and could be out until the end of 2024.
What do you think we should do in this summer’s transfer window?

Comment #3Lee with Botman gone I’m not sure we can afford a goalie like Mamardashvilli
Will miggy move? I don’t think so.
I think we shud get a freebie like Kelly. He is an upgrade on BDB. But his injury history is terrible.
We badly need a striker / forward or two.
Braz might be an interesting DOF and get us better access to South America where Dan wasn’t pulling up any trees.

I saw you said people have given up on mornings here…
I did write a considered post with enough BS to make it look well thought out, but it disappeared in the digital ether so I gave up.
I think the main point was City won’t be paying for their 115 breaches. The little boys, Everton Forest and the like, will be paying.

When we got the Saudis we knew that going for Mbappe and Co was just silly thinking but all we are hearing now is ffp and Eddie saying the summer will not be a transformation, or words to that effect.
Frustrating.

Raya is the keeper that got away for me in the summer it would’ve been next level ruthless to go for him last summer but that’s the type we need
He is rapid coming off his line but when he gets there its like having a play maker this allows Arsenal to push even further up it really would take us to next level to have a keeper who did it all
Just think if Pope comes back and we don’t upgrade our pace and ball playing In defence we still won’t improve massively as its our ability to keep the ball to stop us running for 90s mins that needs improved get some control of games

The recruitment since Howe has come in has been absolutely first class and now you’re accusing him of talking targets down with absolutely no evidence of that at all. You’re calling me a moron, you’re a bigot with a chip on your shoulder.

It’s imperative that we replace Dubs with a sweeper keeper that will either take Pope’s place and push him to number two or be patient and play for his turn.

I agree. Super frustrating.
But I’m sloooowly realising we ain’t going to be City soon. Still, I’m generally enjoying what we’re serving up now.
We’re sorting of competitive, we’re giving people a game, getting chances. I’m proud of my team these days and that’s something.
It ain’t crème de la crème, but it’s pretty good.
Of course, always dreaming. But I’ve seen us way worse. Like zero chances in entire games. 28% possession etc.
You know what I’m talking about, anyone older than three.

I suppose it depends whether they think as a club we can get a hold on these injuries next season? This might effect the budget
Bit risky for me as there isn’t a guarantee Joelinton comes back without another injury Tonali not played in a year know what’s going to happen…..
Wouldn’t mind a few durable athletes in the 23 to 25 year old stage good mix of experience and pace

Comment #18Lee I have no doubt that the injury profile of our key players, bar Bruno and Gordon, isn’t great. That’s why I feel we need a serious look at the medical team to make sure they are good enough and make sure guys are not brought back until ready. Of course that needs more players too and they we hit the ffp noise again. It’s annoying but that’s why I argued so strongly on here two summers ago that ffp was a huge issue when some felt that wasn’t the case and I was overplaying it.

Comment #20Pope may be a sweeper keeper but he’s terrible on the ball and that may push Eddie. It may depend on his philosophy about what goalies need to be. With the injury to Botman another factor. I’d be amazed if we didn’t go in heavily for Kelly, given the need for a left sided defender, his flexibility and a budget that may now need a goalkeeper too.
Will miggy go? That’s another interesting one.

Comment #21Cyprus ignore my detractors on here.
I try to look at the big picture and will articulate the negative if I think it’s accurate.
Reality is that I really like Eddie and I’d be gutted if we got a new dof and he brought his own manager ( eg Bratz/mancini) and Eddie lost out. He has loads of positives.

I think that’s the thing if you can keep the ball better it means you can tire the opposition out pick and choose when to press etc so having a keeper who won’t waste it either makes a massive difference in the modern game
Will be interesting to see how we evolve as a team but if we got a proper quality left back with Barnes fit at left wing and Gordon and Isak as the other part of the front 3 I think we would be really good
Kelly could do the role we need but his fitness would be a concern but he is quality when on it

Squad will need overhaul for next season if as I understand it we will be looking for another promotion
I don’t think it comes into FFP /PSR but might be wrong
If it doesn’t then at least they won’t be as stifled in recruitment but are a long way from the PL ladies teams – much further than we were/are from men’s sides

I think if there was no fitness issues Barnes would probably be the left with Isak in the middle and Gordon on the right but all of them with freedom to drift positions
Gordon’s movement and intelligence I honestly think he could play any position properly after a run in the team
Burn needs to upgrade for that kind of fluidity to work as you need big contributions from both fullbacks to create the chances and help the attack

Comment #37We are all desperate for success after being mismanaged for 20 years. Last season we thought we’d cracked it and we would just consolidate that finish this season. It’s been anything but, although there have been significant highs. But it has also evidenced that we are indeed held back to a certain extent by ffp/psr. This is further exacerbated by the paucity of talent in our youth ranks, so we have limited options to bolster the first team with younguns. That is changing but it takes a number of years for that area of the club to become a reliable source of cover during an injury crisis. And bringing younguns into a losing team can be very damaging. The polar opposite if your team are winning. So it’s hard to see how we’re going to break into that top 4 again anytime soon. That’s the reality. But let’s see what the summer brings.
