Sandro Tonali has been given a 2-month suspended sentence and fined £20K for betting breaches while at Newcastle.
He can start playing in late August and as long as he doesn’t break betting rules next season, the suspension will be dropped.
At last, some excellent news for both Tonali and Newcastle!
This is what Newcastle United put out on their website yesterday about the new suspended ban:
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been given a suspended two-month ban from competitive football by an independent Regulatory Commission after self-declaring breaches of FA Betting Rules.
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been given a suspended two-month ban from competitive football by an independent Regulatory Commission after self-declaring breaches of FA Betting Rules.
He has also been fined £20,000 and warned by the FA as to his future conduct.
The banning period is fully suspended for the duration of the 2024/25 season, meaning he will be available to return to competitive football upon the conclusion of an existing ten-month sanction imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on 27 October 2023.
Provided that he does not commit any further breach of the FA Betting Rules during the suspension period, Sandro will not serve any part of the two-month sanction.
As acknowledged by the FA in the independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons, the level of assistance Sandro has provided by self-referring and fully cooperating with a subsequent investigation is extraordinary and unprecedented.
Sandro made full admissions as to his betting activity, and did so in circumstances where there was no other evidence to support misconduct proceedings.
Sandro is continuing to follow a therapeutic plan and educational programme with the club’s full support and will continue to train with his teammates.
Tonali is still only 23 years old and has played 12 times for the club with one goal, which he scored on his debut.
The fact that he has admitted all his breaches openly and cooperated with the authorities has helped him and it reflects well on the player who has trained all season with the Newcastle squad.
It will be great to have him back in August and I know the Newcastle fans will welcome him back – he’s shown a strong mentality and has never complained about his ban.
Comments welcome.

Comment #6No doubt Fabian Schar is a huge loss, as we are going to miss his guile and football intelligence at the heart of our defence!! i suspect Emil Krafth will step in and fill the breach, although he doesn`t possess the same attributes or class as Schar, i still think he is a good solid seasoned professional, and i`m confident the lad will do a good job.
