Eddie Howe Determined to Keep This Player For One More Season

Most of us have been thinking that this would be Callum Wilson’s last season at Newcastle but the way he has come back into the side and scored two goals for us may change some minds.

Certainly,  Eddie Howe is keen to keep the player next season.

Even though Wilson has had another injury-ravaged season he is still the second top joint goalscorer with Anthony Gordon with 11 goals, 10 of them in the Premier League.

Isak tops the list with 24 goals – 21 in the Premier League.

It was also Wilson’s 47th Premier League goal for Newcastle and one more PL goal will take him into second place above Peter Beardsley in the Newcastle Premier League goalscoring.

After the match, head coach Eddie Howe had these words to say about Callum, who was also at Bournemouth for 6 seasons with Howe:

“Write him off at your peril for sure because he comes back time and time again.”

“He’s a very motivated player and wants to do his very best at every moment. I’ve managed him for a very long time now and mentality wise I wouldn’t swap him.”

“He’s a monster, he’s got a focus and when he’s got a goal he’ll go for it.”

“We knew today was going to be difficult and highlighted really by the first 10 minutes,”

“We knew Burnley would come out firing and that the crowd would play a part in that, so really pleased with the reaction to that first 10 minutes.

“And then from the first goal onwards, I thought it was a really good display from us.”

“I thought confidence and strength is gradually returning to the group so it was a really good day for us.”

“We’ve got three games to go and we want to try and give our best in each game. We want to try and play with the energy and intensity we had today.”

“Our away form has been inconsistent, it’s really good to see us win on the road in such an impressive way.”

If Eddie Howe wants to keep Wilson for next season he should, and we can bring in a young striker to fortify the squad.

His goal against Sheffield United in the 5-1 was superb, and it was a good opportunist goal he scored to put Newcastle 1-0 up on Saturday at Burnley.

Wilson has played 107 games for Newcastle with 48 goals and 11 assists, since signing a four-year contract for around £20M in September 2020.

His contract has just over a year to run and don’t be surprised if he gets a one-year extension in the summer so we could still get a transfer fee from him if he leaves next summer.

On the other hand, because he’s given such good service he may simply become a free agent next summer, assuming he stays for one more season.

We remain 6th in the league table with Manchester United able to go one point above us if they can win at Crystal Palace tonight.

What do you think?

I think the whole argument about manages and who is good or who we would have taken comes down to the DNA of the Toon and the Northeast itself. We want someone who gets the people, the character, the pride of hard work, and earning your keep. The likes of some mentioned may be good where they are for that city…but just not here. A manager should not only knit with the squad but the city and fan base as well. We know a class act when we see one and we know who has an entitlement attitude when we see one. I’ll take the unassuming gentleman behind door number two please. 😉

I would offer him a one year extension and hope (I know!!!) he can stay fit for once in his life! It all depends on our budget.

Afternoon, i got a txt yesterday about Trippier turning up pissed at the training ground on Friday morning after a night out in town on Thursday night.
Apparently he was meant to be part of the squad for Burnley but has had a run in with Howe.
Has anyone else heard about it? it could be total BS but then again…….

Arteta has been at Arsenal for four and a half years. He has built a good side while spending a shit load if money.
I doubt he would have been capable of turning around the good ship Newcastle United around the way Howe has done.
Arteta has had more funds available and hasn’t made any silk purses from sow’s lugs.
If Arsenal don’t win the title this season, and I suspect they won’t, they will never win it.

Reckon we may have room for 4 to 5 upgrades from new signing. Livaremento and Anderson will take up 25-man squad next season

    GK
    1 Martin Dúbravka
    18 Loris Karius -> free up a 25-Squad no.
    22 Nick Pope
    29 Mark Gillespie
U21: any up and coming young GK

    Defender
    2 Kieran Trippier
3 Paul Dummett -> Lloyd Kelly?
    4 Sven Botman
    5 Fabian Schär
    6 Jamaal Lascelles
13 Matt Targett -> New CB
    17 Emil Krafth
    19 Javier Manquillo -> Livaremento above 21
    33 Dan Burn
    U21: Lewis hall
    U21: Alex Murphy

    Midfielder
    7 Joelinton
    8 Sandro Tonali
36 Sean Longstaff -> replace if it helps FFP
    39 Bruno Guimarães
    28 Joe Willock
    Add Elliot Anderson above 21
    U21: Lewis Miley

    Forward
    9 Callum Wilson
    10 Anthony Gordon
11 Matt Ritchie -> young striker
    14 Alexander Isak
    15 Harvey Barnes
    23 Jacob Murphy
24 Miguel Almirón -> first choice right forward

    @Calbee

Yeah I can’t see a massive squad overhaul for me I would look to get our backline sorted with pace and a goalkeeper first and foremost as it would improve us massively

Tosin and Kelly on free transfers replacing Dummett and Manquillo

Ortega or that big Georgian keeper replacing Karius / Dubs

Then assuming Miggy is the one to get sold upgrading our right wing to have someone like Olise or Eze quality (just as examples) then that might be all the business we do other than a few young under 21 players

With FFP and PSR we might be able to go wild this summer but that coupled with players coming back from injury would see us in good shape

Obviously if there is more money available then I’d be looking for a hell of a lot more action !!

Something certainly happened with Trips he’s went from being amazing against Man Utd and Arsenal to utter liability costing us a lot of games

Whatever happened during that England camp break he came back half the player

Even against Sunderland he was decent and then was doing stupid passes which nearly cost us so he got hooked

We look a lot more fluid side since he’s been out and more defensively solid on the right hand side as well

I feel like he will be sold on this summer wouldn’t surprise me to another European team in a slower league

I agree about Tripps,, i don`t think we have missed him as much as first thought and we look far more dangerous in the transition when he isn`t playing.
Gordon seems to be putting in better dead balls than Tripps, if he was sold in the next window then no problem.

    @WLToon

Yeah it would be a big call to sell him but then the top top managers have to be ruthless at times to move on

The way we want to play requires proper pace in the fullback areas to make it work there will always be a trade off if he is our main creative player

Interesting summer coming up that’s for sure

When you can honestly say that your behaviour’s been impeccable, it’s then that you’re in a position to criticise others.

I knew Eddie would not even consider selling Wilson, we’re it his choice. A few weeks ago, when he was still injured, Eddie was saying how to replace this type of player would cost a lot of money.

    This I liked:

    “He’s a monster, he’s got a focus and when he’s got a goal he’ll go for it.”

Well he’s got 47 of those in just over 100 games.

Like Eddie said count him out at your own peril. I like that too, and, confess, you (we) did.

I don’t have any contacts and it’s all rumours right now.

I’m just putting two and two together and giving it a bit of belief from the talk weeks ago about the club working out a new contract for him after it was revealed he had a clause within that said he would get a drop in wages by about 20K if we didn’t make the CL. So makes sense to be true.

    Fingers crossed mate

    Mund,

That would be a huge statement to our squad and also all these supporters of spurs and arsenal who really believe they can just come and poach him from the NEW NUFC. Isak is a very intelligent man as is Bruno and they know we’re on the cusp of something very special and major. They want to be part of it and they’re very happy with their surroundings.

Very good news if it turns out to be correct. Fingers crossed.

    Tripps
He has missed few games this season but is still the highest assisting defender in the prem this year with 10.
I’d be reluctant to lose him as he has good qualities but also realise that he does seem to domininate all free kicks and corners but has been shown that we do have other players just as capable as he is with the set pieces.
Tino and trips excellent pairing at RB going into next season. Prob best pairing in prem at RB
