Most of us have been thinking that this would be Callum Wilson’s last season at Newcastle but the way he has come back into the side and scored two goals for us may change some minds.
Certainly, Eddie Howe is keen to keep the player next season.
Even though Wilson has had another injury-ravaged season he is still the second top joint goalscorer with Anthony Gordon with 11 goals, 10 of them in the Premier League.
Isak tops the list with 24 goals – 21 in the Premier League.
It was also Wilson’s 47th Premier League goal for Newcastle and one more PL goal will take him into second place above Peter Beardsley in the Newcastle Premier League goalscoring.
After the match, head coach Eddie Howe had these words to say about Callum, who was also at Bournemouth for 6 seasons with Howe:
“Write him off at your peril for sure because he comes back time and time again.”
“He’s a very motivated player and wants to do his very best at every moment. I’ve managed him for a very long time now and mentality wise I wouldn’t swap him.”
“He’s a monster, he’s got a focus and when he’s got a goal he’ll go for it.”
“We knew today was going to be difficult and highlighted really by the first 10 minutes,”
“We knew Burnley would come out firing and that the crowd would play a part in that, so really pleased with the reaction to that first 10 minutes.
“And then from the first goal onwards, I thought it was a really good display from us.”
“I thought confidence and strength is gradually returning to the group so it was a really good day for us.”
“We’ve got three games to go and we want to try and give our best in each game. We want to try and play with the energy and intensity we had today.”
“Our away form has been inconsistent, it’s really good to see us win on the road in such an impressive way.”
If Eddie Howe wants to keep Wilson for next season he should, and we can bring in a young striker to fortify the squad.
His goal against Sheffield United in the 5-1 was superb, and it was a good opportunist goal he scored to put Newcastle 1-0 up on Saturday at Burnley.
Wilson has played 107 games for Newcastle with 48 goals and 11 assists, since signing a four-year contract for around £20M in September 2020.
His contract has just over a year to run and don’t be surprised if he gets a one-year extension in the summer so we could still get a transfer fee from him if he leaves next summer.
On the other hand, because he’s given such good service he may simply become a free agent next summer, assuming he stays for one more season.
We remain 6th in the league table with Manchester United able to go one point above us if they can win at Crystal Palace tonight.
What do you think?

It was a definite foul. He lay onto him with his whole body weigh. Can’t do that to a keeper mate.

Comment #100Tell you what I’m very impressed with Palace they have a team of very good players. If we do get Freedman in he knows how to get top players.
Munoz, Wharton, Olise, Eze, Mateta. All very impressive. They may do very well next season playing as they have recently.

Comment #102yeah….we should be tearing this defense apart. The only thing that has kept manure in any game this year is a late flash of skill from Bruno or someone to get a one off goal here and there.

Comment #105Murphy shines again for Magpies
Jacob Murphy had a hand in three Newcastle goals on Saturday in the victory over Burnley. He’s never been the most heralded winger and has spent most of his Newcastle career as a squad player, making more substitute appearances than starts in the league, but has rarely let down Eddie Howe, who calls Murphy “the ultimate professional”. This season, he’s been afforded more time on the pitch thanks to injuries and his own impressive form when handed the opportunity to start. At Turf Moor, Murphy played a pivotal role on the right in a tweaked formation and under a very specific set of instructions, with the winger given plenty of attacking and defensive responsibilities. He held his nerve when in dangerous positions and Newcastle reaped the rewards. Every squad needs a Murphy, it’s the law.

Comment #106Man U are absolutely all over at the back. With Gordon and Isak will kill these. Jonny Evan’s looks so rusty and slow, if they play like this first half against us I can only see an NUFC win. It’s the most I’ve seen man u this disjointed in a long time, if not ever.

Comment #107But of course they will whinge about their injuries. Ours have been far worse and we’ve suffered them for nearly a whole season. Eddie has never used it as an excuse when it wasn’t going well. These lot will and have done already. Apart from sunlun I hate these lot closely followed by the red scousers. If we do get 6th man u miss out on Europe all together lfc win nothing in klopp final season, sunlun finished 15th. Not a bad season over all 🙂
Now let’s get 6th. 5th is just too greedy so 6th will do.

Comment #108Man U are at home to Arsenal next, then at home to us and finally away at Brighton. I don’t think they’ll get a point from those matches. And then they’ll get thrashed in the FA Cup final by City.
Players in their squad making sure then available for the Euros. It’ll be amazing to see how many manage to reappear just in time for their respective countries.

Comment #109Evening all. Great to see Man Utd getting a kicking and hoping they don’t get jammy again!
Looks like I’ll be up in Newcastle this coming weekend for the Brighton game so looking forward to seeing some of you again and meeting a few for the first time.
I’ve never played golf in the NE so I’d be tempted for a round when I’m up there. Any golfers fancy meeting up for a round and chat? I’ll check here a little this evening, otherwise you can find me on the Discord server.
